Book Going the Moose Way Home

Download or read book Going the Moose Way Home written by Jim Latimer and published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 1988 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading specialists in Indo-European religion and society, Bruce Lincoln expresses in these essays his severe doubts about the existence of a much-hypothesized prototypical Indo-European religion. Written over fifteen years, the essays—six of them previously unpublished—fall into three parts. Part I deals with matters "Indo-European" in a relatively unproblematized way, exploring a set of haunting images that recur in descriptions of the Otherworld from many cultures. While Lincoln later rejects this methodology, these chapters remain the best available source of data for the topics they address. In Part II, Lincoln takes the data for each essay from a single culture area and shifts from the topic of dying to that of killing. Of particular interest are the chapters connecting sacrifice to physiology, a master discourse of antiquity that brought the cosmos, the human body, and human society into an ideologically charged correlation. Part III presents Lincoln's most controversial case against a hypothetical Indo-European protoculture. Reconsidering the work of the prominent Indo-Europeanist Georges Dumézil, Lincoln argues that Dumézil's writings were informed and inflected by covert political concerns characteristic of French fascism. This collection is an invaluable resource for students of myth, ritual, ancient societies, anthropology, and the history of religions. Bruce Lincoln is professor of humanities and religious studies at the University of Minnesota.

Book This Moose Belongs to Me

Download or read book This Moose Belongs to Me written by Oliver Jeffers and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the illustrator of the #1 smash hit The Day the Crayons Quit comes the age-old tale of a boy and his moose . . . Wilfred is a boy with rules. He lives a very orderly life. It's fortunate, then, that he has a pet who abides by rules, such as not making noise while Wilfred educates him on his record collection. There is, however, one rule that Wilfred's pet has difficulty following: Going whichever way Wilfred wants to go. Perhaps this is because Wilfred's pet doesn't quite realize that he belongs to anyone. A moose can be obstinate in such ways. Fortunately, the two manage to work out a compromise. Let's just say it involves apples. Oliver Jeffers, the bestselling creator of Stuck and The Incredible Book Eating Boy, delivers another deceptively simple book sure to make kids giggle.

Book excerpt: Two ten year old boys, Waino and Ivar, returned from hunting one cold winter's day and skied back to the livery stable where Ivar's father boarded horses and mules. As Waino pinged his air rifle at a fence he dreamed about the moose he could have shot. All at once there was a very sad sound. It went "Haawwnnk -- hawnk -- hawnk -- haawwnnkk!" The two boys dropped everything. "What do you think that is?" Ivar asked. "Maybe it was a moose," Waino replied softly. And it was a moose -- though it was a while before Ivar's father or Mr. Ryan, the policeman, or the Mayor or any of the townspeople believed it. But what do you do with a moose? What can you do with a moose? Honk was hungry. He ate about a ton of Ivar's father's expensive hay. Then he went to sleep. Something had to be done, but Honk was naturally such a sad moose, you couldn't help feeling sorry for him. With perfect humor and understanding -- of small boys and a problem moose -- the author and artist have created a favorite children's classic. Honk the Moose won distinction as a Newbery Honors Book in 1936, the Lewis Carol Shelf Award in 1970, and was listed in Cattermole's 100 Best Children's Books of the 20th Century.

Book Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue

Download or read book Another Lost Whole Moose Catalogue written by Lost Moose Collective and published by Lost Moose Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a roundabout way, the Lost Whole Moose has come to represent the exploration of all that is really enjoyable about living in the Yukon--it's delights and challenges as well as its hardships. The Lost Moose is really a kind of quest, and includes the discoveries that people make along the way. It is the search for the perfect northern lifestyle. As legend has it, the search takes people down many paths. Some have been here seemingly forever. Others start by spending just a winter, learning to deal with the cold and heating with wood. They may become fascinated with the northern lights, find enjoyment in going for walks at 40 below and start thinking about building a place of their own someday. Then it's the summertime exploration of rivers and forest, reveling 'neath the midnight sun, trying to get a piece of land and learning about land claims and politics. Along the way learning bush crafts and skills needed to cope with town life. As the revelations continue, people are exposed to the many styles of life which are available in this land, including the relaxed practice of horizontal living. As horizontalists, whether full-time, part-time or just sometimes, they learn to enjoy a state of bliss with this life and this land. Experience (and legend) tells us this land is not for everyone; many people arrive and many leave. But for those who like what is here, it seems they keep on liking it. Their search for their Lost Moose, as legend would have it, is still in progress, and that's what this book is all about.

Download or read book The Journey to a Little White House written by Lynda M. Buckman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Permanent Married Quarters of a naval base to the little white house at the end of the road, Lynda M. Buckman and her family have lived a life of fun, adventure, and great love. Military service in their young adulthood and early marriage gave the author and her husband the tools they needed to facilitate strong communication throughout their now five-decades’ long partnership, including in their roles as parents, entrepreneurs, homesteaders, and hobby farmers. In four parts, each encompassing a different home, the author recounts her tales of lessons learned in short anecdotes that are at once comfortingly universal and delightfully original. Told with humour and a lot of heart, The Journey to a Little White House is the story of a wistful dream that became a beautiful reality.
