Book excerpt: Featuring a collection of insightful, scholarly articles, Coming Full Circle: Rediscovering Ancient Wisdom for the Modern World through Cultural Anthropologyencourages students to think critically and challenge their views of "the modern world" and "indigenous societies." The text focuses on questioning Western cultural assumptions and recognizing the value of traditional societies. It also urges students to thoughtfully consider cultures in terms of sustainability and the well-being of their members. The book is organized into eight chapters that each contain an introduction to the topic, key terms, thought exercises, and carefully selected readings. The initial chapter introduces students to the field of anthropology and discusses why it's studied and how it applies to our daily lives. Additional chapters explore our place in the environment, social organization and identity, belief systems and rituals, and the factors that influence peace and violence. Students learn about health and well-being, science and traditional wisdom, and social movements that propel us forward. Designed to introduce students to the discipline through an enlightening exploration of culture, Coming Full Circle is an exemplary resource for foundational undergraduate courses in anthropology. Kristi Arford is a professor of anthropology and the chairperson of the Behavioral Sciences Department at Northern Essex Community College, where she teaches courses in cultural anthropology, sociology, archaeological site explorations, sex and gender, and world religions. God is calling his people to return to a biblical lifestyle that goes full circle in continual worship, discipleship, and missions. Mark Powers connects the dots between these three main elements of authentic Christian living. He presents a theology of missional worship, a detailed discipleship plan, and a strategy for local music missions. Going Full Circle uses everyday language to present a simple thought process to move worshipers and worship leaders to become worshiping disciples on mission. Are you a casualty of worship wars? Are you worried about the decline of your church? Are you thrilled with fast growth churches but sense there must be something more than spectator worship? Are you confused by the word "missional" that seems to be popping up everywhere? This book is for you and your friends. Read it, share it, and join the movement!

Download or read book Coming Full Circle written by Wanda Lloyd and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Inspiring reading for aspiring journalists and students of civil rights.” — Kirkus Reviews Wanda Smalls Lloyd’s Coming Full Circle: From Jim Crow to Journalism—with a foreword by best-selling author Tina McElroy Ansa—is the memoir of an African American woman who grew up privileged and educated in the restricted culture of the American South in the 1950s–1960s. Her path was shaped by segregated social, community, and educational systems, religious and home training, a strong cultural foundation, and early leadership opportunities. Despite Jim Crow laws that affected where she lived, how she was educated, and what civil rights she would be denied, Lloyd grew up to realize her childhood dream of working as a professional journalist. In fact, she would eventually hold some of the nation’s highest-ranking newspaper editorial positions and become one of the first African American women to be the top editor of a mainstream daily newspaper. Along the way she helped her newspapers and other media organizations understand how the lack of newsroom and staff diversity interfered with perceptions of accuracy and balance for their audiences. Her memoir is thus a window on the intersection of race, gender, culture and the media’s role in our uniquely American experiment in democracy. How Lloyd excelled in a profession where high-ranking African American women were rare is a memorable story that will educate, entertain, and inspire. Coming Full Circle is a self-reflective exploration of the author’s life journey from growing up in coastal Savannah, Georgia, to editing roles at seven daily newspapers around the country, and circling back to her retirement in Savannah, where she now teaches journalism to a new generation.

Book excerpt: "Stepping out of the harsh light of the sun and into the more gentle light of the moon, Coming Full Circle brings into view aspects of relationships that we may not have been able to see before. Coming Full Circle examines the cycles of individuals as those cycles play into and intertwine in the cycles of relationships. When we are aware and accepting of our own cycles - waxing into the magic of connecting with others, flowing into a fullness of fruitful productivity, and waning into introspective separateness - we experience growth and health in our relationships." "Coming Full Circle guides us to recognizing our cycles and flowing with them rather than misunderstanding and struggling against them."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of Coming Full Circle: The Process of Decolonization Among Post-1965 Filipino Americans, Professor EJR David writes a new FOREWORD and the author has a NEW INTRODUCTION. Coming Full Circle is about the healing of the Filipino colonized psyche through the recovery and re-imagination of Filipino identity and culture. It is about the emergence from the 'culture of silence' to critical consciousness that is able to develop new conceptualizations and frameworks about the Filipino American experience. Decolonization is a psychological process that enables the colonized to understand and overcome the depths of alienation and marginalization caused by the psychic and epistemic violence of colonization. Decolonization transforms the consciousness of the colonized through the reclamation of the Filipino cultural self and makes space for the recovery and healing of traumatic memory, and healing leading to different forms of activism. It is an open-ended process. It is a new way of seeing. As a way of healing, it is also a promise and a hope.

Download or read book Full Circle written by Andrea Barber and published by Citadel. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She grew up in front of the world on the beloved sitcom Full House, but then actress Andrea Barber abruptly left Hollywood. Why did she leave and what did she do for twenty years out of the spotlight before returning to television? This is her funny and inspiring memoir of fame, heartache, resilience—and the reboot of a lifetime . . . When Kimmy Gibbler burst into the Tanners’ home on Full House in 1987, audiences immediately connected with the confident and quirky pre-teen character, played by ten-year-old actress Andrea Barber. During an eight-season run on one of the most popular series of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Andrea came of age in front of millions. But she was as far removed from her character as a girl can get. The introverted young star was plagued with self-doubt, insecurities, and debilitating anxieties that left her questioning her identity after the show’s cancelation. Andrea wouldn’t return to the public eye until 2016, for Fuller House. So what happened in those intervening decades that Andrea jokingly calls “the lost years”? For starters, Andrea never stopped working. But it was on a series of life-changing transitions: earning a college degree, then a Master’s, building a career in international education, getting married, and starting a family. She also faced some unforeseeable transitions: navigating a sudden divorce after nearly twelve years of marriage, and second-guessing her capabilities as a single mother. But it was her devastating bout with post-partum anxiety and depression that derailed Andrea’s life—and became a crucial turning point. Full Circle is a raw, refreshingly honest look into the life of a celebrity who has never been fully comfortable in the spotlight. Here Andrea shares her deeply personal struggles with mental health in a way she has never done before. She opens up about fighting her way back and finding solace—while finding herself—all before her life came full circle with her costars and lifelong friends on Fuller House. Sharing her journey from child star, to champion of mental health, and back to stardom, Andrea writes in a way that feels like catching up with an old friend. You’ll laugh, reminisce, and finally get to know the woman behind the zany next door neighbor.

Book excerpt: So much about the society that is now emerging in the twenty-first century bears an astonishing resemblance to the most prominent features of what we call the classical world - its institutions, its priorities, its entertainment, its physics, its sexual morality, its food, its politics, even its religion. The ways in which we live our rich and varied lives correspond - almost eerily so - to the ways in which the Greeks and Romans lived theirs. Whether we are eating and drinking, bathing or exercising or making love, pondering, admiring or enquiring, our habits of thought and action, our diversions and concentrations recreate theirs. It is as though the 1500 years after the fall of Rome had been time out from traditional ways of being human. This eye-opening book makes us look afresh at who we are and how we got here. Full Circleis not only wonderfully witty and brilliantly astute, but also profound and often disquieting. Ferdinand Mount effortlessly peels back 2000 years of history to show how much we are like the ancients, how in ways both trivial and crucial we arethem and they are us.

Book Going Full Circle

Download or read book Going Full Circle written by Phillip Taylor and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guillain Barre syndrome is an horrific and very frightening illness, basically this illness takes away all of your bodily functions, to the level where you cannot do anything for yourself (even breathe), and you truly believe you might die, unfortunately some do. The one characteristic of Guillain Barre syndrome is that it in no way affects the function of your brain, to be fully aware of what is going on around you yet be unable to move or even speak is mind-glowingly awful. It was because of the retention of all his mental faculties that the author was able to chronicle all the suffering in accurate detail. This level of lucidity and accuracy makes this book a compelling read for anyone, even those without the illness, as a "human interest" tale of the biggest battle this author ever had to face. Of course this book will be of use to fellow sufferers and their families, but it is aimed at the wider audience as well. There is some biography at the start of the story to give you some idea of the authors background, which saw him as a serving soldier in the Armed Forces. Nothing has been left out this story, however unpalatable it may be, from the rapid decline, the loss of all of bodily functions, and eventually the need for life-support systems. The story encompasses all of the highs and lows, the raw emotions, and personal thoughts of this illness, and there are many. The lighter side of the story comes later in the book, dealing with the immense battle it took to regain all the physical functions, which people take for granted, like breathing, talking, eating, drinking and having to learn to walk all over again at forty years of age.
