The recent global political environment, with a deepening confrontation between China and the West, strengthens this binary image. Post-Chineseness boldly challenges the essentialized notion of Chineseness in existing scholarship through the revelation of the multiplicity and complexity of the uses of Chineseness by strategically conceived insiders, outsiders, and those in-between. Combining the fields of international relations, cultural politics, and intellectual history, Chih-yu Shih investigates how the global audience perceives (and essentializes) Chineseness. Shih engages with major Chinese international relations theories, investigates the works of sinologists in Hong Kong, Singapore, Pakistan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and other academics in East Asia, and explores individual scholars' life stories and academic careers to delineate how Chineseness is constantly negotiated and reproduced. Shih's theory of the "balance of relationships" expands the concept of Chineseness and effectively challenges existing theories of realism, liberalism, and conventional constructivism in international relations. Chapters in Section II present a snapshot of Japanese and Korean views, beginning with the musical practices in the Joseon Period (1392-1910) that are still being practiced in South Korea today to Western influences in 19th century Japan. A collection of philosophical traditions from South and Southeast Asia are contained in Section III, ranging from the insights of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX of Thailand, an accomplished jazz musician, to the Balinese notion of taksu, a form of supreme energy and divine power crucial for compelling performances in the performing arts. We venture into the Islamic and the Middle Eastern world in Section IV, where the dance practices of the Hadhrami Arabs in the Malay Archipelago to traditional sharah music are contextualized within Islamic philosophy. This section also describes the philosophical ideas of the 12th-century Persian philosopher and founder of the Illuminationist (Ishraq) philosophy, Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi, arguing that his ideas have much to recommend music education, as this approach requires students to listen in deeper ways, absorb more abundantly, and move beyond arts education to encompass the education of the whole person. Section V concludes with a metaphorical view on a New Silk Road in music education in the 21st century, where ideas are traded for mutual benefit and the development multicultural philosophies of music education. While there are numerous publications on the philosophy of music education rooted in the Western philosophical traditions of ancient Greece, the Asian philosophical voice is virtually silent outside of Asia, and this volume aims to begin the long process of redressing this imbalance. This volume will open readers to the richness of Asian philosophical sources and hopefully stimulate dialogues that could generate new insights and directions for further development, cross-pollination, and application of some of the world's earliest philosophical traditions.

Book excerpt: Sovereign wealth funds are state-controlled pools of capital that hold financial and real assets, including shares of state enterprises, and manage them to grow the nation’s base of sovereign wealth. The dramatic rise of sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) in both number and size—this group is now larger than the size of global private equity and hedge funds, combined—and the fact that most are located in non-OECD countries, has raised concern about the direction of capitalism. Yet SWFs are not a homogenous group of actors. Why do some countries with large current account surpluses, notably China, create SWFs while others, such as Switzerland and Germany, do not? Why do other countries with no macroeconomic justification, such as Senegal and Turkey, create SWFs? And why do countries with similar macroeconomic features, such as Kuwait and Qatar or Singapore and Hong Kong, choose different types of SWFs? Capital Choices analyzes the creation of different SWFs from a comparative political economy perspective, arguing that different state-society structures at the sectoral level are the drivers for SWF variation. Juergen Braunstein focuses on the early formation period of SWFs, a critical but little understood area given the high levels of political sensitivity and lack of transparency that surround SWF creation. Democratisation has been described to occur in waves. The first wave of a democratic awakening in post-independence Singapore began with J. B. Jeyaretnam’s victory in the Anson by-election of 1981. That built up to the 1984 general election, the first of many to be called a “watershed”, in which Chiam See Tong was also elected in Potong Pasir. After their successes in 1991, the opposition began dreaming of forming the government. But their euphoria was short-lived. Serious fault lines in the leading Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) rose to the surface almost immediately after the opposition victories of 1991, and the party was wiped out of Parliament by 1997. The opposition spent the next decade experimenting with coalition arrangements, to work their way back to victory.
