Book The Last Utopia

  • Author : Samuel Moyn
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-05

Download or read book The Last Utopia written by Samuel Moyn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights offer a vision of international justice that today’s idealistic millions hold dear. Yet the very concept on which the movement is based became familiar only a few decades ago when it profoundly reshaped our hopes for an improved humanity. In this pioneering book, Samuel Moyn elevates that extraordinary transformation to center stage and asks what it reveals about the ideal’s troubled present and uncertain future. For some, human rights stretch back to the dawn of Western civilization, the age of the American and French Revolutions, or the post–World War II moment when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was framed. Revisiting these episodes in a dramatic tour of humanity’s moral history, The Last Utopia shows that it was in the decade after 1968 that human rights began to make sense to broad communities of people as the proper cause of justice. Across eastern and western Europe, as well as throughout the United States and Latin America, human rights crystallized in a few short years as social activism and political rhetoric moved it from the hallways of the United Nations to the global forefront. It was on the ruins of earlier political utopias, Moyn argues, that human rights achieved contemporary prominence. The morality of individual rights substituted for the soiled political dreams of revolutionary communism and nationalism as international law became an alternative to popular struggle and bloody violence. But as the ideal of human rights enters into rival political agendas, it requires more vigilance and scrutiny than when it became the watchword of our hopes.

Book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea

Download or read book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Hermann Und Dorothea: Edited With Introduction, Appendices, Notes, and Vocabulary There are teachers who think Hermann and Dorothea not well adapted as an introductory text to the study of Goethe. My own impression is just the opposite. I have read the poem with classes more than twenty times. For a number of years I have put on the final examination paper the question: Arrange in your order of preference the books that have been read in this course. N o matter how many books were read or in what order they were read Hermann and Dorothea has practically always won first place. Book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea

Download or read book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Hermann Und Dorothea: With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary To make easy and enjoyable the early reading of the poem for its own sake is the aim 'of this edition. It leaves to later study the details of the great author's life and poetic development, and does not endeavor through the poem to teach the history of the German language or of German literature. For this book, therefore, the editor believes that a place is open. Both Introduction and Notes are designed to be concise and practical, while to the Vocabulary most careful attention and elaboration have been given, in order to make it complete, accurate, and thoroughly helpful. The publishers are responsible for the posi tion of the Notes, which in accordance with their ear lier desire were designed by the editor to be footnotes on the pages of the Text. It has seemed advisable to make this change in response to the earnest solicita tions of many teachers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
