Book Defying Gravity

Download or read book Defying Gravity written by Carol de Giere and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Schwartz is among the rare American composer-lyricists whose Broadway musicals have inspired passionate followings, resulting in blockbuster hits like Wicked, Godspell, and Pippin. In the revised and updated second edition of Defying Gravity, biographer Carol de Giere reveals how Schwartz’s beloved musicals came to life, adding four new chapters that shed light on the continuing Wicked phenomenon and exciting projects that include stage adaptations of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Alan Menken and The Prince of Egypt. A popular feature of the first edition remains intact for the second: the story of Schwartz’s commercially unsuccessful shows, how he coped, and how he gave himself another chance. The new edition also features an acclaimed series of “Creativity Notes” with insights about the creative process. Wicked enthusiasts are treated to a revealing, in-depth account of the show’s evolution that takes readers from developmental workshops, to the pre-Broadway tryout in San Francisco, through the arguments over changes for Broadway, and finally to productions around the world. Movie musical fans know that Disney’s pairing of Stephen Schwartz (for lyrics) with composer Alan Menken (for music) led to award-winning movie musicals “Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted. Menken’s revelatory “Foreword” that introduces the second edition of Defying Gravity explores their “wonderful chemistry” and creative challenges. The abundance of behind-the-scenes stories in this Stephen Schwartz biography came by way of the author’s unprecedented access to this legendary songwriter for interviews. She also drew from conversations with his family members, friends, and colleagues (librettists, composers, directors, producers, and actors) to render a rich portrait of this complex and gifted artist. She rounds out the book with photographs, Schwartz’s handwritten notes, and highlighted quotations. Performers and others involved in productions of Godspell, Pippin, Children of Eden, Working, Rags, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, will discover the intentions of the shows’ creators. Singers, writers, fans, and anyone interested in the development of stage and film musicals will enjoy multiple insights from this backstage journey, from Godspell to Wicked, and beyond.

Book Playing God

  • Author : Henry Carl Bial
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2015-08-20
  • ISBN : 0472121510
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Playing God written by Henry Carl Bial and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical texts have inspired more than 100 Broadway plays and musicals, ranging from early spectacles like Ben-Hur (1899) to more familiar works such as Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. What happens when a culture’s most sacred text enters its most commercial performance venue? Playing God focuses on eleven successful productions, as well as a few notable flops that highlight the difficulties in adapting the Old and New Testaments for the stage. The book is informed by both performance studies and theater history, combining analysis of play scripts with archival research into the actual circumstances of production and reception. Biblical plays, Henry Bial argues, balance religious and commercial considerations through a complex blend of spectacle, authenticity, sincerity, and irony. Though there is no magic formula for a successful adaptation, these four analytical lenses help explain why some biblical plays thrive while others have not.

Book God Spells LOVE with an X

Download or read book God Spells LOVE with an X written by Brigitta Hebdon and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to peer through a telescope into the lives of others? Who hasn't wanted to, right? In the pages of this book, God Spells Love with an X, no telescope is needed. The author, Brigitta Hebdon, welcomes the reader into her crazy family that is profoundly affected by Fragile X syndrome. This is not a parenting book, although it's told from a mother's perspective. It's not a how-to book for righteous living, because goodness knows she hasn't figured that out! It will not demonstrate exemplary positivity. You'll find that the author is human. She yells, curses, and fights. She also cries, prays, seeks forgiveness, and keeps going. It's not a book about God, although he is present in every chapter. This is a tale of remarkable love. Jared teaches his mom every day how to view the world in unique and hilarious ways. The lessons are chronicled in the Facebook posts Brigitta has kept for the last fifteen years since Jared was in elementary school. This book is guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and probably get a little mad. It's not a story about disability. These life lessons are for everyone, the most important one being that God is with you regardless of your circumstances. Jared's world is beautiful, something he has to remind his mom of every day. The tapestry of his life is woven in colorful threads of childlike innocence, imagination, and his keen sense of humor. The dark hues are a result of mood and behavior disorders, as well as other affectations brought on by his disability. But a tapestry without shadows and contrasts is flat and boring. The dynamic between Jared and his mom is anything but boring! For example... Arguing with Jared about whether or not his lunch (that I packed) sucks. Finally, he ended the "discussion" with this, "Gosh, you're being a brat." --Facebook, November 2014, age 13 This book will make you smile and be grateful for your own life's challenges, just like the feeling you get when you watch someone pull gum out of their hair. You'll laugh at the circumstances, all the while being happy it's not you pulling out your own hair. However, these life lessons will give you tools for your own struggles, because we don't always get gum in our hair, but eventually, we all step on it! Cover Design by Rian Elaine

Book Books in Brief Anthropomorphic Depictions of God

Download or read book Books in Brief Anthropomorphic Depictions of God written by Zulfiqar Ali Shah and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental study examines issues of anthropomorphism in the three Abrahamic Faiths, as viewed through the texts of the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Qur’an. Throughout history Christianity and Judaism have tried to make sense of God. While juxtaposing the Islamic position against this, the author addresses the Judeo-Christian worldview and how each has chosen to framework its encounter with God, to what extent this has been the result of actual scripture and to what extent the product of theological debate, or church decrees of later centuries and absorption of Hellenistic philosophy. Shah also examines Islam’s heavily anti-anthropomorphic stance and Islamic theological discourse on Tawhid as well as the Ninety-Nine Names of God and what these have meant in relation to Muslim understanding of God and His attributes. Describing how these became the touchstone of Muslim discourse with Judaism and Christianity he critiques theological statements and perspectives that came to dilute if not counter strict monotheism. As secularism debates whether God is dead, the issue of anthropomorphism has become of immense importance. The quest for God, especially in this day and age, is partly one of intellectual longing. To Shah, anthropomorphic concepts and corporeal depictions of the Divine are perhaps among the leading factors of modern atheism. As such he ultimately draws the conclusion that the postmodern longing for God will not be quenched by pre-modern anthropomorphic and corporeal concepts of the Divine which have simply brought God down to this cosmos, with a precise historical function and a specified location, reducing the intellectual and spiritual force of what God is and represents, causing the soul to detract from a sense of the sacred and thereby belief in Him.

Book excerpt: The God of Abraham The God of Isaac The God of Jacob The God of Sarah The God of Rebecca The God of Rachel The God of Leah ... the God of Me There is no easy prescription for how to know God, yet everyone can pursue a personal relationship with God, just as our patriarchs and matriarchs did in their lives. How we come to know God, however, is unique to each of us, influenced by our study of Torah, the insights of the Rabbis of antiquity, as well as our own experiences throughout our lifetime. To open the way for you to find God's presence in your life, Rabbi David Lyon uses the central prayer in Jewish worship, the Amidah, as a starting point, and guides you compellingly through classic Torah texts and midrash. He helps you clear away preconceived images of God from your childhood or dogmas that restrict your experience of God in personal and meaningful ways today. Combining profound teachings from Jewish sources with insights and experiences from real life, he shows how you can enjoy a unique relationship with God—the God of you, your God of me.

How do fans, musicians, and music industry executives define their markets’ boundaries? What happens when musicians cross those boundaries? What can Christian music teach us about commercial popular music? In God Rock, Inc., Andrew Mall considers the aesthetic, commercial, ethical, and social boundaries of Christian popular music, from the late 1960s, when it emerged, through the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic research, historical archives, interviews with music industry executives, and critical analyses of recordings, concerts, and music festival performances, Mall explores the tensions that have shaped this evolving market and frames broader questions about commerce, ethics, resistance, and crossover in music that defines itself as outside the mainstream.

Book What Does God Want Me to Give

Download or read book What Does God Want Me to Give written by Dale L. Elliott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real life application of what God actually wants you to give him. God actually reveals this in his word, but this book brings it out in modern day english in a way that is easy to understand, and with examples of the authors own personal experiences. This is not only for the young, this is for the mature Christian also....a must read to learn and grow spiritually. I am so glad I took my time and read this book, being a Christian of many years it brought out things I had never considered with my relationship with God. The epilogue has a special section for cancer patients, and perhaps they can relate to the author's personal diary he shares while going through chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and surgery. It was helpful/funny to read about his experience, and thoughts while he battled cancer during treatments.
