Book Late Antique and Early Christian Gems

Download or read book Late Antique and Early Christian Gems written by Jeffrey Spier and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 2007 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout the Middle Ages, Roman gems and cameos were highly valued as intrinsically precious objects or even as possessing magical properties. During the Renaissance, large collections of gems were formed by aristocratic collectors who sought inspiration from the classical images engraved on them, and gems have been collected for similar reasons ever since. With the exception of a few dedicated antiquaries, however, collectors and scholars over the last five hundred years or so have generally ignored late antique and early Christian gems. This study presents more than 1000 gems from different collections, more than 300 of them unpublished so far. They are presented according to different genres, themes, material and place or time of production. The catalogue is completed by about 1300 illustrations."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Divine Reflections is a book of spiritual poetry. God and His Son, Jesus are my first love, and I profoundly enjoy writing about them through poetry. The poems are enlightening and spiritually significant in worshipping and serving them. The principle aspects of the poems are to promote Gods Word, and encourage saintly behavior. This is imperative to all Gods people who want a closer relationship with Him. He loves all His people, whether they are a believer or non-believer.Yet, its His desire to have everyone love and glorify Him, repent for their sins, and accept Jesus as their Savior. In addition, He wants them to embody the Holy Ghost, and live their lives steadfast in Faith and works, exercising holiness. Saintly behavior rooted in holiness is the crown all believers and saints of God desire to wear in their heaven oriented relationship with Him, and His son, Jesus. Divine Reflections consist of lucent accounts of Jesus life, saint building prayers, and a diversity of praises. These are enjoyable powerful spiritual elements that govern true believers and saints of God.The family and nature poems are crafted from a natural point of view, true to spiritual roots. The nature poems applaud Gods creations, herald praises and thanksgiving for His all knowing and omnipresent spirit. The family poems conveyed in tender simplicity, are Gods superior natural blessings. They are endowed to all His people, both the believer and nonbeliever. Divine Reflections has been a delight for me to write. Im a saint of God, and its gives me great pleasure to craft poems based on His Word.I love Gods Word, and with the help of the Holy Ghost, I strive to exhibit the saintly behavior that it commands. In doing so, Im earnestly seeking His promise of eternal life. Its my hope, the vividly crafted poems, first and foremost will inspire the reader to read Gods Word more and heed the spiritual principles that encourage saintly behavior. Its also my hope for the reader to enjoy reading the poetry.

  • Author : Theodore de Bruyn
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-26

  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Making Amulets Christian written by Theodore de Bruyn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Amulets Christian: Artefacts, Scribes, and Contexts examines Greek amulets with Christian elements from late antique Egypt in order to discern the processes whereby a customary practice--the writing of incantations on amulets--changed in an increasingly Christian context. It considers how the formulation of incantations and amulets changed as the Christian church became the prevailing religious institution in Egypt in the last centuries of the Roman empire. Theodore de Bruyn investigates what we can learn from incantations and amulets containing Christian elements about the cultural and social location of the people who wrote them. He shows how incantations and amulets were indebted to rituals or ritualizing behaviour of Christians. This study analyzes different types of amulets and the ways in which they incorporate Christian elements. By comparing the formulation and writing of individual amulets that are similar to one another, one can observe differences in the culture of the scribes of these materials. It argues for 'conditioned individuality' in the production of amulets. On the one hand, amulets manifest qualities that reflect the training and culture of the individual writer. On the other hand, amulets reveal that individual writers were shaped, whether consciously or inadvertently, by the resources they drew upon-by what is called 'tradition' in the field of religious studies.

Book The First Urban Churches 6

Download or read book The First Urban Churches 6 written by James R. Harrison and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of early Roman Christianity by New Testament and classical scholars Building on the methodologies introduced in the first volume of The First Urban Churches and supplementing the in-depth studies of Corinth, Ephesus, Philippi, Colossae, Hierapolis, and Laodicea (vols. 2–5), essays in this volume challenge readers to reexamine what we know about the early church within Rome and the port city of Ostia. In the introductory section of the book, James R. Harrison discusses the material and documentary evidence of both cities, which sets the stage for the essays that follow. In the second section, Mary Jane Cuyler, James R. Harrison, Richard Last, Annelies Moeser, Thomas A. Robinson, Michael P. Theophilos, and L. L. Welborn examine a range of topics, including the Ostian Synagogue, Romans 1:2–4 against the backdrop of Julio-Claudian adoption and apotheosis traditions, and the epistle of 1 Clement. In the final section of this volume, Jutta Dresken-Welland and Mark Reasoner engage Peter Lampe’s magnum opus From Paul to Valentinus; Lampe wraps up the section and the volume with a response. Throughout, readers are provided with a rich demonstration of how the material evidence of the city of Rome illuminates the emergence of Roman Christianity, especially in the first century CE.

Book Constantine Divine Emperor of the Christian Golden Age

Download or read book Constantine Divine Emperor of the Christian Golden Age written by Jonathan Bardill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Constantine was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. The book explores the emperor's image as conveyed through literature, art, and architecture, and shows how Constantine reconciled the tradition of imperial divinity with his monotheistic faith. It demonstrates how the traditional themes and imagery of kingship were exploited to portray the emperor as the saviour of his people and to assimilate him to Christ. This is the first book to study simultaneously both archaeological and historical information to build a picture of the emperor's image and propaganda. It is extensively illustrated" --Provided by publisher.
