Download or read book Godfrey Ucar Chitalu written by Jerry Muchimba and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godfrey "Ucar" Chitalu was Zambia’s greatest footballer. He scored more than 100 goals in a calendar year, and was also among the greatest African players according to a list released by the Confederation of African Football in 2006. Godfrey "Ucar" Chitalu traces the life story of the football player, from his early life to his exploits in the Zambian league for Kitwe United and the Kabwe Warriors, as well as his brushes with football authorities. His national team career is examined in detail, highlighting the key games he played alongside match reports and a list of the goals he scored. The 107 goals that Chitalu scored in 1972 are documented in great detail. The book also looks at Chitalu’s life outside football, his playing and coaching career and gives an insight into how football was shaped over the years in Zambia. The Gabon air disaster of 1993, which claimed the lives of thirty Zambian players, coaches, officials and crew, including Chitalu, is also re-visited. Author Jerry Muchimba shares his own inspirations behind his decision to embark on research into Zambian football, the same research that would go on to play a cardinal role when his country challenged Lionel Messi’s claim to the most goals scored in a calendar year. The goal record challenge is shared in great detail, culminating in FIFA’s ruling on the topic of who holds the record for scoring most goals in a calendar year. This effectively denied Chitalu his place in football history… Godfrey "Ucar" Chitalu is the first ever biography of a Zambian footballer, and will appeal to any fans of the sport and its history.
Download or read book Crash of the Buffalo written by Jay Mwamba and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Mwamba's "Crash of the Buffalo" is a compelling account of the 1993 plane crash that wiped out Zambia's national soccer team, and the inspiring story of the nation’s remarkable comeback. The book details the tragedy, its aftermath, and the incredible resilience and determination of a nation to rebuild and honor the memories of its fallen heroes. Zambia was on the cusp of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. when the DHC-5D Buffalo military transport carrying the team crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 30 people on board. The nation was devastated, but the government announced that the team would continue with its quest to qualify for both the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations. A new squad was built around star player Kalusha Bwalya, who’d escaped the crash. The squad underwent an intensive six-week training program in Denmark under a young coach named Roald Poulsen. Rebuilt Zambia went on to defeat Morocco in its first game 10 weeks after the crash. And 11 months later, they stormed into the final of the 1994 African Cup of Nations.
Download or read book Zambia Sporting Score written by Moses Sayela Walubita and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ZAMBIA SPORTING SCORE is a historic account of Zambias golden era, when the country produced some of the greatest athletes in Africa. It goes back to the pre-independence days when the country was the British colony called Northern Rhodesia. Among the many sportsmen and women covered in the book are Yotham Muleya, the long-distance runner who died in a car accident while on tour of duty in the United States of America, The Flying Sikh Satwant Singh (motor rally), veteran judo administrator Father Jude McKenna and Lottie Mwale, who was a formidable boxer whose ring name was Kaingo (the Leopard). Lottie was the All-Africa and Commonwealth light-heavyweight boxing champion when he also went to America to have a go at a world title. ZAMBIA SPORTING SCORE records the medals brought home from the All-Africa, Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Zambia scored successes in golf, soccer, and other sports at continental and global events. Then came an eclipse, a period when Zambia only boosted the number of participating countries in international competitions. What drove athletes of the period to success? Is Esther Phiri, the current Queen of the Ring, recapturing that lost glory? This inspiring, well-researched and authoritative book is a must to read for everyone. The opening of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Youth Development Centre in Lusaka, Zambia; will produce sportspersons of the calibre covered in the book. ***** All Zambians everywhere held their collective breath just before Stophira Sunzu of the Zambian Football team Chipolopolo boys kicked the penalty. When he scored to make the penalties 8-7 to beat Ivory Coast, pandemonium broke, wild celebrations, jubilation took place on the field and all over Zambia and among well-wishers everywhere. Most of us did not go to bed until the wee hours of the morning. Zambia had just won the most prestigious soccer cup trophy on the continent: The Africa Cup of Nations. This cup had eluded the nation since Independence in 1964. During all the celebrations, Zambians have remembered the National Soccer team that perished in 1993 in a plane crash in Gabon. This may be the right time to ask all Zambians whether we know enough about our Zambian heroes in not just football or soccer, but many other sports. Do you know who in Zambia were at one time the Muhammad Ali of Boxing, the Pele of the country or the greatest soccer player, or who was the best long distance runner? The easy to read book Zambia Sporting Score by Moses Sayela Walubita is what you urgently need at this point in our proud nations history. ZAMBIA SPORTING SCORE describes Zambian achievements in 16 sports in such well known and popular sports as Soccer, Boxing, and Athletics but also less popular sports in Zambia including Netball, Volleyball, Table and Lawn Tennis, Golf and many others. The book describes sports in the Southern African country of Zambia from the 1950s when the country was a British colony of Northern Rhodesia. It describes Zambias greatest sports personalities, team sports, and their achievements. In the country's number one sport of soccer, the book describes the performances of such Zambias legendary players as Ucar Godfrey Chitalu; who is perhaps Zambias best and most dazzling soccer player ever. Samuel 'Zoom' Ndhlovu and Kalusha Bwalya will forever be etched in the history of soccer and sports in Zambia and beyond. Chitalu is by far Zambians equivalent to Pele of Brazil soccer great. Chitalu in one soccer season in 1972 scored 107 goals facing stiff premier club and international defenses. Chitalu was a deadly striker who left goalkeepers sprawled on the ground diving to save his shots. He was Zambia's scoring machine long before the era of Kalusha Bwalya, the 1988 Africa Footballer-of the Year.

Download or read book Football Disasters The moments we will never forget written by Caroline Elwood-Stokes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that we can divide the world-history of football-related deaths into three periods. The early period, 1900-1959, contains from 0 to 3 tragedies per decade. Deaths were very rare - but were tremendously tragic when they happened. Take for instance the very first incident occurring on the 5th of April in 1902 at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, where Scotland played England in the British Home Championship. At the time it was considered to be the most prestigious international tournament in the world and would therefore draw a large audience. While the game was being played the newly built wooden West Stand broke under the weight of the excited crowd. People fell several meters down and on top of each other - resulting in 26 people dying and 517 being injured. Blame was put on the rain that had fallen the night before the game, causing the wooden construction to become unstable. Arena architects abandoned wood as material for higher audience facilities after this episode. But what caused the other disasters?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting Zambia to Work examines some critical issues in Zambia's recent history, including the country's unhealthy dependency on 'foreign largess' and their implications for national self-assertion, social self-reliance and sustainable development. The book suggests practical and simple ways in which Zambia could lift itself out of its current underdevelopment trap. Though most of the proposed solutions do not require huge investments in new money, they do however require improved transparency and accountability in the use of existing resources.
Download or read book Against All Odds written by Anthony Mukwita and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humility Edgar Lungu has been known for many things but humility for a man of influence in a country where people often get over-consumed by their own self-importance sets him several paces apart from other politicians or national leaders. Observers have sometimes described his humility as his most admirable quality and, to many people - especially the common folk who make up the largest part of Zambias population - his most endearing attribute. Tenacity If there was one word to describe Edgar Lungu as a late-blooming politician facing a vicious power struggle to replace Zambias fifth President Michael Sata, tenacious would be that word. He needed bags of it, first, to survive the bitterly fought internal war to win the Patriotic Fronts nomination to stand as its candidate in the 2015 Presidential election occasioned by Satas death and, later, to fend off arch-rival Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition UPND in another closely contested Presidential poll. Politician Politicians make their names for any number of reasons or actions. Some for their ruthlessness, others for their brashness, cunning or indeed kindness. Edgar Lungu seems to have crafted a name for himself simply by cleverly playing the role of the political tyro who knew little about the game...the green horn the opposition made the fatal mistake of underrating. Peace-loving It is hard to imagine any other Zambian politician would so willingly have yielded to another the instruments of power left with them in accordance with the law by a sitting president, as Michael Sata did when he left Edgar Lungu to serve in his place the night he left for the UK to seek medical help in 2014. When Sata died in hospital, there were many 'expert' voices advising Lungu to keep hold onto the instruments of power, rather than decline to the incumbent Vice-President Guy Scott. Lungu happily handed over the instruments to a man who would then go on to do almost all in his powers to hinder his ambition to win the subsequent Presidential election. This is because he sought peace. I want to be remembered as an ordinary person who became President, a person who brought ordinary and human characteristics to the office of the Presidency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Hot FM radio interview October 2015. By Anthony Mukwita.
