Download or read book The Universal Christ written by Richard Rohr and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From one of the world’s most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that Jesus was called “Christ,” and how this forgotten truth can restore hope and meaning to our lives. “Anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book.”—Melinda Gates In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus’s last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is.
Download or read book The Grand Universe written by Celestial Authors and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BOOK OF URANTIA was presented by celestial authors through an anonymous human receiver. It was published in 1955 as The Urantia Book, a 2,097-page volume divided into four parts and 196 papers. These papers describe God, the grand universe and its many inhabitants, the origin and history of our planet (Urantia), the life and teachings of Jesus, and the glorious destiny God has planned for every creature throughout his vast domains. This volume comprises Part I, The Central and Superuniverses, and Part II, The Local Universe, together comprising the Grand Universe wherein we live. The other two volumes, Part III, The History of Urantia and Part IV, The Life and Teachings of Jesus are published separately. Since the first printing in 1955 a number of changes were made to the text by two different publishers, resulting in inconsistencies. In 2007 a joint Standard Reference Text Committee was formed of long-time readers to review the changes and adopt a uniform text for future printings. This book duplicates the 1955 book word for word and line for line, with footnotes indicating the Committee's decisions.

Download or read book Hindu Revivalism in Bengal 1872 1905 written by Amiya P. Sen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an intensive study of certain facets of social and intellectual life in Bengal between 1872 and 1905, particularly Hindu revivalism. The period under discussion represents significant progress in the area of social and religious reform as well as a period which witnessed hostile attitudes towards such reforms. This is probably the first major work concerning the controversy that surrounded the Brahmo Marriage Bill of 1868–72 and the Consent Bill of 1890–92. The major source material for this book comprises contemporary Bengali literature, including essays, newspaper articles and correspondence, novels, short stories, drama, and poetry. Though this study purports to be a history of intellectual life in Bengal and the broader intellectual trends and movements, it is largely an examination of certain developments centred in or around Calcutta.

Download or read book Duns Scotus on God written by Richard Cross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franciscan John Duns Scotus (c. 1266-1308) is the philosopher's theologian par excellence: more than any of his contemporaries, he is interested in arguments for their own sake. Making use of the tools of modern philosophy, Richard Cross presents a thorough account of Duns Scotus's arguments on God and the Trinity. Providing extensive commentary on central passages from Scotus, many of which are presented in translation in this book, Cross offers clear expositions of Scotus's sometimes elliptical writing. Cross's account shows that, in addition to being a philosopher of note, Scotus is a creative and original theologian who offers new insights into many old problems.
Download or read book Where Is This God of Yours written by Jean Denomme and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-07-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering both intellectual refreshment and spiritual encouragement, Where is This God of Yours? explores the potential of evolutionary theory to transform how we see ourselves, our relationships, our belief systems, and our purpose for being here. Gathered from years of research and reading, Jean Denomme has woven her interests in history, science, and theology into this thorough discussion of evolutionary theory, the nature of human consciousness, and the nature of God. Where is This God of Yours? raises questions of God and presents basic evolutionary theory in regard to the development of the universe, earth, and humans. It examines Catholic teachings, human behavior, and human purpose within an evolutionary context, while providing insights into the sources of human suffering and consequent personal and social responsibility. This exploration of science and faith is geared for Catholics and other Christians who are looking for a way to believe without turning off their minds and for those who want to find a more engaging purpose for living on earth than the hope of some mythical life in another world.

Download or read book The Will of God written by Michael Phillips and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Make Me Like Jesus shares a personal and thought-provoking inquiry into the practical mechanics of knowing God’s will in our lives. One of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith is how we can understand the Will of God. The difficulty is underscored by Scripture’s repeated use of the word “unknowable” in connection with “the Almighty”. How can we possibly grasp that which is unknowable? Yet God commands us to know him. He also commands us to search diligently to find wisdom. We are therefore called upon to make the attempt to understand something we will never be capable of knowing. In Will of God, Michael Phillips discusses how we can best approach this challenge with gusto as well as humility.
Download or read book First Philosophy written by Andrew Bailey and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory anthology brings together forty-eight readings on eight topics central to philosophy. Mindful of the intrinsic difficulty of much of the material, the editor has provided comprehensive introductions both to the eight topics and to each individual selection. By providing a detailed discussion of the historical and intellectual background to each piece, he aims to enable readers to approach the material without unnecessary barriers to understanding. The topics—from "Does God exist?" to "Do we have free will?" and "What is justice?"—have been chosen with a view both to their philosophical importance and to their interest to the first-year student. In an introductory chapter, the editor provides a brief introduction to the nature of philosophical enquiry, to the nature of argument, and to the process of reading and writing within the academic discipline of philosophy.
