Book excerpt: God’s Roses I saw a rose once blooming beside a garden wall. It unfolded its lovely petals and stood up straight and tall. The sun in all its glory kissed all the dew away. The breeze caught the rose in its arms and caused it to gently sway. The fragrance filled the garden; its sweetness filled the air. Its beauty could not be captured; God’s love placed it there. Summer passed, then Autumn; its leaves began to fall. The wind blew the lovely petals; some fell on the garden wall. Autumn passed, then Winter; the rose could no longer be found. The storms in all their fury had buried it beneath the ground. This rose is like the Christian; the sun shines, then departs. But God in His infinite mercy knows the strength of the human heart. Then Spring with a burst of glory invades the garden wall. And God’s children shall rise again like the rose beside the wall.

Book Sons of the Gods Children of Earth

Download or read book Sons of the Gods Children of Earth written by Peter W. Rose and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and venturesome book, Peter W. Rose applies the insights of Marxist theory to a number of central Greek literary and philosophical texts. He explores major points in the trajectory from Homer to Plato where the ideology of inherited excellence—beliefs about descent from gods or heroes—is elaborated and challenged. Rose offers subtle and penetrating new readings of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Pindar's Tenth Pythian Ode, Aeschylus's Oresteia, Sophokles' Philoktetes, and Plato's Republic. Rose rejects the view of art as a mere reflection of social and political reality—a view that is characteristic not only of most Marxist but of most historically oriented treatments of classical literature. He applies instead a Marxian hermeneutic derived from the work of the Frankfurt School and Fredric Jameson. His readings focus on illuminating a politics of form within the text, while responding to historically specific social, political, and economic realities. Each work, he asserts, both reflects contemporary conflicts over wealth, power, and gender roles and constitutes an attempt to transcend the status quo by projecting an ideal community. Following Marx, Rose maintains that critical engagement with the limitations of the utopian dreams of the past is the only means to the realization of freedom in the present. Classicists and their students, literary theorists, philosophers, comparatists, and Marxist critics will find Sons of the Gods, Children of Earth challenging reading.

Book Orwell s Roses

Download or read book Orwell s Roses written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Granta Books. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roses, pleasure and politics: a fresh take on Orwell as an avid gardener, whose political writing was grounded in his passion for the natural world. 'I loved this book... An exhilarating romp through Orwell's life and times' Margaret Atwood 'Expansive and thought-provoking' Independent Outside my work the thing I care most about is gardening - George Orwell Inspired by her encounter with the surviving roses that Orwell is said to have planted in his cottage in Hertfordshire, Rebecca Solnit explores how his involvement with plants, particularly flowers, illuminates his other commitments as a writer and antifascist, and the intertwined politics of nature and power. Following his journey from the coal mines of England to taking up arms in the Spanish Civil War; from his prescient critique of Stalin to his analysis of the relationship between lies and authoritarianism, Solnit finds a more hopeful Orwell, whose love of nature pulses through his work and actions. And in her dialogue with the author, she makes fascinating forays into colonial legacies in the flower garden, discovers photographer Tina Modotti's roses, reveals Stalin's obsession with growing lemons in impossibly cold conditions, and exposes the brutal rose industry in Colombia. A fresh reading of a towering figure of the 20th century which finds solace and solutions for the political and environmental challenges we face today, Orwell's Roses is a remarkable reflection on pleasure, beauty, and joy as acts of resistance. 'Luminous...It is efflorescent, a study that seeds and blooms, propagates thoughts, and tends to historical associations' New Statesman 'A genuinely extraordinary mind, whose curiosity, intelligence and willingness to learn seem unbounded' Irish Times

Book God s Revelation to the Human Heart

Download or read book God s Revelation to the Human Heart written by Seraphim Rose and published by Saint Herman Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does man seek in religion, and what should he seek in it? How does God reveal Himself in order to bring man to a knowledge of the Truth? How does suffering help this revelation to occur? These and other questions were discussed by Fr. Seraphim Rose, an Orthodox Christian monk from the mountains of northern California, during a lecture he gave at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1981. The contents of this lecture comprise God's Revelation to the Human Heart. Drawing from a variety of sources -- the Holy Scriptures, patristic writings, the lives of both ancient and modern saints, and accounts of persecuted Christians behind the Iron Curtain -- Fr. Seraphim goes to the core of all Christian life: the conversion of the heart of man, which causes it to bum with love for Christ and transforms one into a new being.

Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Book A Rumor of Roses Planting Seeds of God s Extravagant Love

Download or read book A Rumor of Roses Planting Seeds of God s Extravagant Love written by Sally Klein O'Connor and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rumor of Roses bears witness to an honest struggle to personally forgive, love my enemies, see through some deeply entrenched and culturally justified prejudices to become an ambassador of God's extravagant love to people in places still shamed and shadowed by echoes of great evil. Growing up Jewish, unconditional love and forgiveness were not tenets my family lived by or passed onto me. Cynicism and judgment were the predominant lenses through which I was taught to view people and circumstances. And nowhere was this more evident than in the feelings the Jewish community held onto in regard to Germany. As so many of my race, culture, and generation, I grew up with a deep-seated dislike for Germany based on what happened in the Holocaust during the Second World War. But in 2006 I experienced a "holy confrontation" and the bitterness handed down by my parents' generation-seeded and rooted in my heart-was exposed. In that moment I understood the way I was brought up to think about Germany was not in accord with God's heart. Much deeper than forgiving-as impossible as that may seem to many who lost family and friends-it went right to the heart of love God desires His people to express in this world. Beginning with personal issues of forgiveness with my father and others, God revealed His mercy and grace in vulnerable corners of my history, and taught my heart how to look beyond the deep hurt and offense I instinctively held onto. In the process I changed and continued to grow in this revelation. It set the foundation for a special project, A Tour of Roses, which I began with my husband, Michael, in 2009, under the umbrella of Improbable People Ministries. Beneath the banner of healing and reconciliation we began to freely give out hundreds, and then thousands of long stem red roses to people in the streets of Dachau, Oswiecim (Auschwitz), Berlin, Munich, Warsaw, Jedwabne, Krakow, Mauthausen-to name a few. Later, we also brought A Tour of Roses to Belfast, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, and to the Sunset Strip in L.A. one Halloween night. Each rose was accompanied by a keepsake card, which spoke simply to the heart of the matter: Red for the blood of the people who died.Red for the Savior's blood which was shed for all.Red for His perfect love, which removes all fear, making it possible to love one another.I believe A Rumor of Roses is timely because of the current trends in the world-and in the church-of getting caught up in social/political issues, and ignoring the actual individual human beings involved. For instance, even though I am Jewish and there are certain politics and loyalties that people automatically assume are connected to my identity, we brought A Tour of Roses twice to Bethlehem. While there, we visited one of the more difficult Palestinian refugee camps, worshiping and handing out roses there. So much of what we heard back from those who received roses from us was their absolute surprise that we would travel all that way to just love on them. All of us on that team were amazed to see how God touched hearts through such a simple act of love and kindness. I am not a scholar or theologian, just a fellow worshiper with her own set of wounds through which God is revealing His redemptive nature. A Rumor of Roses is not a treatise on reconciliation, but observations along the way on a continuing journey further up and further into the heights and depths of those mercies that are new every morning which spring from the extravagant love of God

Every aspect of the charts, maps and time lines leaps off the page with spectacular color, incredible accuracy and intricate detail. . . . A must for every pastor and teacher who wants to clearly present the truths of the Bible." --Dr. Jerry Falwell, Founder of Liberty University "A compendium of charts, time lines, lists and illustrations to accompany study of the Bible. This visually appealing resource provides a wide array of illustrative and textually concise references, beginning with three sets of charts covering the Bible as a whole, the Old Testament and the New Testament. These charts cover such topics as biblical weights and measures, feasts and holidays and the 12 disciples. Most of the charts use a variety of illustrative techniques to convey lessons and provide visual interest. A worthwhile example is 'How We Got the Bible, ' which provides a time line of translation history, comparisons of canons among faiths and portraits of important figures in biblical translation, such as Jerome and John Wycliffe. The book then presents a section of maps, followed by diagrams to conceptualize such structures as Noah's Ark and Solomon's Temple. Finally, a section on Christianity, cults and other religions describes key aspects of history and doctrine for certain Christian sects and other faith traditions. Overall, the authors take a traditionalist, conservative approach. For instance, they list Moses as the author of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible) without making mention of claims to the contrary. When comparing various Christian sects and world religions, the emphasis is on doctrine and orthodox theology. Some chapters, however, may not completely align with the needs of Catholic and Orthodox churches. But the author's leanings are muted enough and do not detract from the work's usefulness. As a resource, it's well organized, inviting and visually stimulating. Even the most seasoned reader will learn something while browsing. Worthwhile reference stuffed with facts and illustrations." --Kirkus Reviews
