Book Introduction to the Intertestamental Period

Download or read book Introduction to the Intertestamental Period written by Raymond F. Surburg and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When readers of the Bible turn its pages from Chapter 4 of Malachi to Chapter 1 of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, they pass not only from the Old to the New Testament, a fact of which they are well aware, but they also pass over a number of centuries, a truth to which most readers give little thought. Between Malachi and the appearance of John the Baptist there is an interlude of about four centuries. Certain scholars in the past have characterized these centuries as the "silent centuries," and have relegated them to oblivion, not considering them of much significance for Jewish history or for an understanding of the history and theology of the New Testament. In a larger sense than is often realized, these centuries are the key for the understanding and adequate comprehension of the life and literature of the New Testament. While the setting for both the Old and New Testaments is the Mediterranean world, yet the intellectual, social, and religious backgrounds of both Testaments is different. The fact is that the atmosphere in which the New Testament is written is in large part the product of the period between the Testaments, and no amount of study of the Old Testament can solely explain it. On the other hand, no survey of the life of the Roman era is able to give the biblical reader explanations of many New Testament phrases and ideas. - Introduction.

Book Ecclesiastes Song of Songs

Download or read book Ecclesiastes Song of Songs written by George Athas and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new commentary for today's world, The Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible's grand story. The first commentary series to do so, SGBC offers a clear and compelling exposition of biblical texts, guiding everyday readers in how to creatively and faithfully live out the Bible in their own contexts. Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike. Each volume employs three main, easy-to-use sections designed to help readers live out God's story: LISTEN to the Story: Includes complete NIV text with references to other texts at work in each passage, encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible's grand story. EXPLAIN the Story: Explores and illuminates each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. LIVE the Story: Reflects on how each text can be lived today and includes contemporary stories and illustrations to aid preachers, teachers, and students. — Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs— Commentators have derived a range of interpretations of the book of Ecclesiastes. For some, it's wholly in keeping with traditional biblical wisdom, while for others it is a radically unorthodox manifesto. Song of Songs has likewise been subject to a number of interpretations and challenges. Is it an allegory for God's love for his people, or is its intent plainer—an exposition of human love and sexuality? Edited by Scot McKnight and Tremper Longman III, and written by a number of top-notch theologians, The Story of God Bible Commentary series will bring relevant, balanced, and clear-minded theological insight to any biblical education or ministry.

This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God even listening? Public interest in spiritual things is at an all-time high, and one of the most often discussed topics is prayer. Yet there are vexing questions related to our communication with God, and much misinformation is circulated about prayer—even among Christians. Many struggle with hard questions. In fact, there seem to be as many negative attitudes and questions about prayer as there are positive things said about it. 10 Questions About Prayer Every Christian Must Answer does what other books do not: explore the link between Christian apologetics and prayer. Elmer Towns and Alex McFarland— each with extensive pastoral and academic experience—respond to common objections and questions about prayer, offering biblically informed, well-reasoned answers.
