Book excerpt: These are my favorite Bible verses. They deal with God's Love, things that God does not love, the power of faith and, for me, an insight into Jesus's personality. To me, he was really a cool guy. When the crowd was going to stone the woman, he said, according to John, Chapter 8: Verse 7, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." While the crowd gradually dispersed, he doodled in the sand, waiting. When the men had all gone, he asked the woman, "Where are those who condemned you?" She said, they had all gone, there was no one there to condemn her. Then, as John, Chapter 8: Verse 11, tells us, Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." So Jesus's handling for sin was not punishment and suffering, but just stop sinning and live righteously. When I read that this time through The Bible, I realized that all those punishments listed in the Old Testament were intended to keep people on the straight and narrow, not to reduce the population. They were intended to prevent sin.As I studied The Bible again, I realized that both the Old and New Testaments speak about God's love.In The Old Testament, Leviticus, Chapter 19: Verse 18, we read. "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Again, in Leviticus, Chapter 19: Verse 33, we read,"the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself."The New Teatament teaches us, in John, Chapter 4: Verse 8, "He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love." Also in 1 John, Chapter 4: Verse 7, "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God." Further, in 1 John Chapter 4: Verse 11, "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another."

Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Book excerpt: Danny Hodges became the senior pastor of a young church fellowship known as Calvary Chapel in St. Petersburg, Florida, in April of 1984. Three years later when he was introduced to Pastor Chuck Smith and the Calvary Chapel movement, he felt an immediate sense of being at home and was grateful to God for leading him to this network of churches that upheld a simple, biblical philosophy of ministry and well-balanced doctrine. Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg soon became a fellowship of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and since that time God has steadily grown the ministry from a handful of mostly young single adults to a large church full of families. It has been exciting to see God's Spirit bring many to salvation through Jesus Christ, see lives change and mature in the Lord, see relationships bloom and grow, see ministries evolve and prosper, see a hunger for the Word of God and see a passionate desire to win the lost to Jesus. Pastor Danny and his wife, Wendy, consider it an honor to serve this growing body of believers together with their four children, Tanner, Hayden, Jairus and Audra.

Book Why I Love the Apostle Paul

Download or read book Why I Love the Apostle Paul written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Besides Jesus, no one has kept me from despair, or taken me deeper into the mysteries of the gospel, than the apostle Paul." —John Piper No one has had a greater impact on the world for eternal good than the apostle Paul—except Jesus himself. For John Piper, this impact is very personal. He does not just admire and trust Paul. He loves him. Piper gives us thirty glimpses into why his heart and mind respond this way. Can a Christian-killer really endure 195 lashes from a heart of love? Can a mystic who thinks he was caught up into heaven be a model of lucid rationality? Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother? If we know this man—if we see what Piper sees—we too will love him. Paul's testimony is a matter of life and death. Piper invites you into his relationship with Paul in the hope that you will know life, forever.

Book My Favorite Bible Verses Chapters

Download or read book My Favorite Bible Verses Chapters written by Rev. Rudy Roxas and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-06-20 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is my personalized and reflective approach to the greatest ancient writings, the Holy Scriptures, later compiled into canonical books, the Bible. My purpose in this book is best expressed by what Paul wrote: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3 :16) However, the ultimate goal of a spiritual life is to seek, receive, and appreciate the gift of salvation from God to us and to do what is pleasing to Him as we live our faith-hope-love lives. This book is not a substitute for the Bible, bible dictionaries, concordances, or commentaries, but it is an unconventional handy reference for the believers, followers, teachers, authors, listeners, and doers of the living and active Word of God. The Bible for me is like a giant jigsaw puzzle of thousands of pieces of words, pictures, images, symbols, thoughts, visions, imaginations, interpretations, meanings, actions, movements, events and happenings. They are in your face. The challenge of this book is to simplify its complexities—patiently and painstakingly connecting the dots, integrating fragmentations, realigning related thoughts, and searching for the meanings of life “rooted and grounded in [God’s] love.” (Ephesians 3:17) Without going through the details, I followed these processes: asking God questions by reflecting, and debating within myself for answers, anticipating questions that readers might ask, and answering them not by my words but mostly by God’s words. I’ve employed the use of underlining for emphasis and readability and bracketed information, clarifications, comments and lessons to learn. Appended at the very end of the book are some of my favorite collections of icebreakers, which I used to introduce my given talks.
