Book The Tyranny of Heaven

Download or read book The Tyranny of Heaven written by Michael Bryson and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tyranny of Heaven argues for a new way of reading the figure of Milton's God, contending that Milton rejects kings on earth and in heaven. Though Milton portrays God as a king in Paradise Lost, he does this neither to endorse kingship nor to recommend a monarchical model of deity. Instead, he recommends the Son, who in Paradise Regained rejects external rule as the model of politics and theology for Milton's fit audience though few. The portrait of God in Paradise Lost serves as a scathing critique of the English people and its slow but steady backsliding into the political habits of a nation long used to living under the yoke of kingship, a nation that maintained throughout its brief period of liberty the image of God as a heavenly king, and finally welcomed with open arms the return of a human king. Michael Bryson is a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Northwestern University.

Book For God Or for Tyranny

Download or read book For God Or for Tyranny written by Walid Shoebat and published by . This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressives denounce God and the Bible as an old writ from thousands of years ago, that we need to advance and modernize-God is "outmoded" they say. "Perhaps it is time to set up a new moral code without Him." FOR GOD OR FOR TYRANNY shows how mankind digresses every time he takes this route-that evil is the process of us governing others rather than allowing God to govern us. We can either believe that God exists or He simply is nowhere to be found. But God's moral law stands-which we shall prove here. If we remove God, the government will become God. This book will show conclusively that whenever we abandon God, we elevate a collective tyranny into a god. Either God becomes king or a tyrant becomes king. This book equips and trains the inner soul through a journey into history examining some of our downfalls when man thought he was superior, to later only recognize, after the havoc, and only then confess, that the core of his principles was indeed appalling. Today the world is at it again, demanding global unity. But unity under freedom is the process of uniting individuals that disagree, while tyranny is the process of forcing everyone to agree-in unison.

Book Beauty in the Wreckage

Download or read book Beauty in the Wreckage written by Brandon Andress and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right in the middle of the chaos and division, heartache and anxiety, we are faced with the seemingly impossible words of Jesus--that He came to give us life to the fullest. But what do you do when this "life to the fullest" feels so far away? What do you do when the deepest longing of your soul groans for more than what you are experiencing? If there is "life to the fullest," how do we even begin to find it, and then how do we begin to extend it to others? In his most poetic and thought-provoking work to date, Brandon Andress makes the surprising discovery that, even in the heartache, the hostility, the division, the violence, and the oppression, experiencing "life to the fullest," a life of shalom, is not just possible, it can be our present reality. But in order to discover it, we must learn how to see and live differently--moment by moment--for the transformation of our lives, our families, our relationships, and our communities.

Book The Emergence of Sin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew Croasmun
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 019027798X
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book The Emergence of Sin written by Matthew Croasmun and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can have a sense that when we try to do right by one another, we aren't merely striving against ourselves. The feeling is that we are struggling against something--someone-else. As if there's a force-a person- that wishes us ill. In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul describes just such a person: Sin, a cosmic tyrant who constrains our moral freedom, confuses our moral judgment, and condemns us to slavery and to death. Commentators have long argued about whether Paul literally means to say Sin is a person or is simply indulging in literary personification, but regardless of Paul's intentions, for modern readers it would seem clear enough: there is no such thing as a cosmic tyrant. Surely it is more reasonable to suppose "Sin" is merely a colorful way of describing individual misdeeds or, at most, a way of evoking the intractability of our social ills. In The Emergence of Sin, Matthew Croasmun suggests we take another look. The vision of Sin he offers is at once scientific and theological, social and individual, corporeal and mythological. He argues both that the cosmic power Sin is nothing more than an emergent feature of a vast human network of transgression and that this power is nevertheless real, personal, and one whom we had better be ready to resist. Ultimately, what is on offer here is an account of the world re-mythologized at the hands of chemists, evolutionary biologists, sociologists, and entomologists. In this world, Paul's text is not a relic of a forgotten mythical past, but a field manual for modern living.

Book Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles

Download or read book Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles written by Drew J. Strait and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden Criticism of the Angry Tyrant in Early Judaism and the Acts of the Apostles adds to the current literature of imperial-critical New Testament readings with an examination of Luke’s hidden criticism of imperial Rome in the Acts of the Apostles and in Paul’s speech on the Areopagus in Acts 17. Focusing on discursive resistance in the Hellenistic world, Drew J. Strait examines the relationship between hidden criticism and persuasion and between subordinates and the powerful, and he explores the challenge to the dissident voice to communicate criticism while under surveillance. Strait argues that Luke confronts the idolatrous power and iconic spectacle of gods and kings with the Gospel of the Lord of all—a worldview that is incompatible with the religions of Rome, including emperor worship.

Book excerpt: Hell: The word means terror, darkness, and eternal separation from God. Some people think the Bible is clear about hell, but what if they're mistaken? With gripping narrative and solid scholarship, Sweeney charts hell's "evolution" from the Old Testament underworld Sheol, through history and literature, to the greatest influencer of all: Dante's Inferno. He reveals how the modern idea of hell is based mostly on Dante's imaginative genius-but in the process, he offers a more constructive understanding of the afterlife than ever before. Disturbing and enthralling, Sweeney will forever alter what we think happens to us after we die-and more importantly, he will make us reconsider how we live.

Book Hating God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Schweizer
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-11-04
  • ISBN : 0199780013
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Hating God written by Bernard Schweizer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While atheists such as Richard Dawkins have now become public figures, there is another and perhaps darker strain of religious rebellion that has remained out of sight--people who hate God. In this revealing book, Bernard Schweizer looks at men and women who do not question God's existence, but deny that He is merciful, competent, or good. Sifting through a wide range of literary and historical works, Schweizer finds that people hate God for a variety of reasons. Some are motivated by social injustice, human suffering, or natural catastrophes that God does not prevent. Some blame God for their personal tragedies. Schweizer concludes that, despite their blasphemous thoughts, these people tend to be creative and moral individuals, and include such literary lights as Friedrich Nietzsche, Mark Twain, Zora Neale Hurston, Rebecca West, Elie Wiesel, and Philip Pullman. Schweizer shows that literature is a fertile ground for God haters. Many authors, who dare not voice their negative attitude to God openly, turn to fiction to give vent to it. Indeed, Schweizer provides many new and startling readings of literary masterpieces, highlighting the undercurrent of hatred for God. Moreover, by probing the deeper mainsprings that cause sensible, rational, and moral beings to turn against God, Schweizer offers answers to some of the most vexing questions that beset human relationships with the divine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important two-volume contribution to the field of secular studies offers the first comprehensive examination of atheists and non-religious people around the world. Who are atheists? How does atheism relate to various aspects of our social world, such as politics, feminism, globalization, and the family? And what is the current state of atheism internationally? Atheism and Secularity addresses the growing interest in the non-religious world by exploring these and related questions. It is a comprehensive and compelling look at atheists and atheism both nationally and internationally, covering a range of topics often overlooked in other books on the subject. Atheism and Secularity is not a philosophical, polemic work, but rather an exploration of who atheists are, what they believe, how they relate to the world, and how the world relates to them. The first volume focuses on topics such as family life, gender, sexuality, politics, and social movements. The second volume looks at atheism and secularity around the world, exploring the lives of non-religious people in North America, Japan, China, India, Europe, the Arab World, and other locations.
