Book Can God Intervene

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary Stern
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2007-04-30
  • ISBN : 031306802X
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Can God Intervene written by Gary Stern and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death and devastation wrought by the tsunami in South Asia, Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf states, the earthquake in Pakistan, the mudslides in the Philippines, the tornadoes in the American Midwest, another earthquake in Indonesia-these are only the most recent acts of God to cause people of faith to question God's role in the physical universe. Volcanic eruptions, wildfires, epidemics, floods, blizzards, droughts, hailstorms, and famines can all raise the same questions: Can God intervene in natural events to prevent death, injury, sickness, and suffering? If so, why does God not act? If not, is God truly the All-Loving, All-Powerful, and All-Present Being that many religions proclaim? Grappling with such questions has always been an essential component of religion, and different faiths have arrived at wildly different answers. To explore various religious explanations of the tragedies inflicted by nature, author Gary Stern has interviewed 43 prominent religious leaders across the religious spectrum, among them Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People; Father Benedict Groeschel, author of Arise from Darkness; The Rev. James Rowe Adams, founder of the Center for Progressive Christianity; Kenneth R. Samples, vice president of Reason to Believe; Dr. James Cone, the legendary African American theologian; Tony Campolo, founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education; Dr. Sayyid Syeed, general secretary of the Islamic Society of North America; Imam Yahya Hendi, the first Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University; Dr. Arvind Sharma, one of the world's leading Hindu scholars; Robert A. F. Thurman, the first American to be ordained a Tibetan Buddhist monk; David Silverman, the national spokesman for American Atheists; and others—rabbis, priests, imams, monks, storefront ministers, itinerant holy people, professors, and chaplains—Jews, Roman Catholics, mainline Protestants, evangelical Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Atheists-people of belief, and people of nonbelief, too. Stern asked each of them probing questions about what their religion teaches and what their faith professes regarding the presence of tragedy. Some feel that the forces of nature are simply impersonal, and some believe that God is omniscient but not omnipotent. Some claim that nature is ultimately destructive because of Original Sin, some assert that the victims of natural disasters are sinners who deserve to die, and some explain that natural disasters are the result of individual and collective karma. Still others profess that God causes suffering in order to test and purify the victims. Stern, an award-winning religion journalist, has extensive experience in this type of analytical journalism. The result is a work that probes and challenges real people's beliefs about a subject that, unfortunately, touches everyone's life.

These three faiths all trace their spiritual roots back to the same individual, Abraham." "However, conflict between Christians and Muslims has been a constant theme of history for 14 centuries." "Many other factors have contributed to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and subsequent terrorism, including the Israeli-Palestinian problem and the domination of American culture." The book is astounding, the documentation is rigorous and compelling... The product of a massive 7-year research project." Dr. Jack Van Impe Jack Van Impe Ministries IS HISTORY SIMPLY A RANDOM SERIES OF EVENTS. OR IS THERE EVIDENCE THAT GOD ORDERS MAN'S TIMELINE AS INTRICATELY AS HE DOES THE UNIVERSE? WILL GOD'S FINAL JUDGMENT ELIMINATE GLOBAL THREATS, WAR, FAMINE, EPIDEMICS AND ESTABLISH PEACE ON EARTH? DO YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL SAVE YOU TERRIBLE TROUBLE AND ETERNAL REGRET? It cannot be overstated how important it is to study Bible prophecy. It prepares us for the future. For example, God told His Jewish nation centuries in advance how long they would be in Egypt, in Babylon, and dispersed worldwide. The Bible unequivocally identifies the coming event that will cause many Jews to move to Israel from the West. By focusing on Israel, the flash-point of ancient conflicts, and on prophecy; we can gain discernment! God will use ferocious forces to deliver Israel after a devastating invasion. A brilliant imposter will deceive the world and take credit for God's fiery rescue. In this war-torn, mind-shattering time, people that don't know God's word will believe this deceiver is the messiah. Events will culminate with God's world-shaking judgment on a magnitude unseen in human history. Death is not the end! Eternity is ahead of us! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Up to the twentieth century, Islamic charitable endowments provided the material foundation of the Muslim world. In Lebanon, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the imposition of French colonial rule, many of these endowments reverted to private property circulating in the marketplace. In contemporary Beirut, however, charitable endowments have resurfaced as mosques, Islamic centers, and nonprofit organizations. A historical anthropology in dialogue with Islamic law, God's Property demonstrates how these endowments have been drawn into secular logics—no longer the property of God but of the Muslim community—and shaped by the modern state and modern understandings of charity and property. Although these transformations have produced new kinds of loyalties and new ways of being in society, Moumtaz’s ethnography reveals the furtive persistence of endowment practices that perpetuate older ways of thinking of one’s self and one’s responsibilities toward family and state.

Book excerpt: When your world of traditional assumptions is shaken where do you turn for inner peace and personal comfort? Considering Pascals wager, if there is no god and we disbelieve we have lost nothing, but if there is a god and we disbelieve we may have lost everything. But, what if there is no free will and we all must believe whatever we are given? That is the primary question that pushed this author into investigating what the world religions and philosophies taught about the existential puzzle called life. When my traditional faith failed to provide any comfort after untimely death of my wife I began searching for some belief I could live with, and this is what I was given. Many thinking people have rejected the mythical god of the Bible and the Quran but they have not found a suitable substitute. Since there is no proof for or against the existence of God, everyone must be agnostic or atheist if they will admit it. Perhaps it is time to replace the anthropomorphic god with one that really works. Not the god of the Bible or the Quran, but the prime force in the universe: Generator, Operator, Destroyer...G.O.D. The expanded and updated essays in the second edition of this book develop such a new theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end times contain many exciting events we are all familiar with and think we fully understand. The appearance and domination of the Antichrist throughout the world. The rise and global domination of the Revised Roman Empire, resulting in a One World Government. The Mark of the Beast that makes trade impossible anywhere on the Earth. The universal devastation wrecked by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The appearance of the spiritual harlot of Mystery Babylon, and the end time false religion. However, consider the following: What if the Antichrist will not become the universal or worldwide leader? What if the Mark of the Beast is regional, rather than global? What if there is no Revised Roman Empire? What if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have already been loosed? What if Mystery Babylon could never be the Roman Catholic Church? Who did Jesus identify as the Mystery Babylon of Revelation? What if the Twelfth Imam, the Islamic Messiah, is slain in the rebuilt Jewish Temple? Why is it impossible to know the identity of the Antichrist until certain events unfold? Why are the dates of the Rapture and that of the Second Coming both unknowable? Who is left to enter into the Millennial Kingdom if theres a Post-Tribulational Rapture? Why are the identities of the two end-time prophets unknowable? What country is poised to play a major role within these end-time events? In a detailed and thorough analysis of Scripture, The Great Tribulation! explores these and many more questions related to the end-time events in a step-by-step approach. Using a literal interpretation of Scripture, this eschatological study is unsurpassed in detail for the knowledgeable Bible student and yet remains basic and straightforward for the novice.
