Book Sutherland Springs

Download or read book Sutherland Springs written by Joe Holley and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2021 Texas Institute of Letters Carr P. Collins’ Award for Best Book of Nonfiction** One part Columbine, one part God Save Texas, Joe Holley's riveting, compassionate book examines the 2017 mass shooting at a church in a small Texas town, revealing the struggles and triumphs of these fellow Texans long after the satellite news trucks have gone. Sutherland Springs was the last place anyone would have expected to be victimized by our modern-day scourge of mass shootings. Founded in the 1850s along historic Cibolo Creek, the tiny community, named for the designated physician during the siege of the Alamo, was once a vibrant destination for wealthy tourists looking to soak up the "cures" of its namesake mineral springs. By November 5, 2017, however, the day a former Air Force enlistee opened fire in the town's First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs was a shadow of its former self. Twenty-six people died that Sunday morning, in the worst mass shooting in a place of worship in American history. Holley, who roams the Lone Star State as the "Native Texan" columnist for the Houston Chronicle and earned a Pulitzer- Prize nomination for his editorials about guns, spent more than a year embedded in the community. Long after most journalists had left, he stayed with his fellow Texans, getting to know a close-knit group of people - victims, heroes, and survivors. Holley shows how they work to come to terms with their loss and to rebuild shattered lives, marked by their deep faith in God and in guns. He also uses Sutherland Springs' unique history and its decades-long decline as a prism for understanding how an act of unspeakable violence reflects the complicated realities of Texas and America in the twenty-first century.

Book God Land

  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book God Land written by Lyz Lenz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Will resonate with any readers interested in understanding American landscapes where white, evangelical Christianity dominates both politics and culture.” —Publishers Weekly In the wake of the 2016 election, Lyz Lenz watched as her country and her marriage were torn apart by the competing forces of faith and politics. A mother of two, a Christian, and a lifelong resident of middle America, Lenz was bewildered by the pain and loss around her—the empty churches and the broken hearts. What was happening to faith in the heartland? From drugstores in Sydney, Iowa, to skeet shooting in rural Illinois, to the mega churches of Minneapolis, Lenz set out to discover the changing forces of faith and tradition in God’s country. Part journalism, part memoir, God Land is a journey into the heart of a deeply divided America. Lenz visits places of worship across the heartland and speaks to the everyday people who often struggle to keep their churches afloat and to cope in a land of instability. Through a thoughtful interrogation of the effects of faith and religion on our lives, our relationships, and our country, God Land investigates whether our divides can ever be bridged and if America can ever come together. “God Land, Lyz Lenz’s much-anticipated debut book, is a marvel. Not only is it a window into the middle America so many like to stereotype but fail to fully understand in all of its complexity, but it mixes reportage, memoir, and gorgeous prose so seamlessly I wanted to know how she did it.” —Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita

Book God Guns Grits and Gravy

Download or read book God Guns Grits and Gravy written by Mike Huckabee and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller from a presidential candidate for the 2016 election! In God, Guns, Grits and Gravy, Mike Huckabee asks, "Have I been taken to a different planet than the one on which I grew up?" The New York Times bestselling author explores today's fractious American culture, where divisions of class, race, politics, religion, gender, age, and other fault lines make polite conversation dicey, if not downright dangerous. As Huckabee notes, the differences of opinion between the "Bubble-villes" of the big power centers and the "Bubba-villes" where most people live are profound, provocative, and sometimes pretty funny. Where else but in Washington, D.C. could two presidential golf outings cost the American taxpayers $2.9 million in travel expenses? Government bailouts, politician pig-outs, and popular culture provocations from Jay-Z and Beyoncé to Honey Boo-Boo to the Duck Dynasty's Robertson family. Gun rights, gay marriage, the decline of patriotism, and the mainstream media's contempt for those who cherish a faith-based life. The trouble with Democrats, the even bigger trouble with Republicans, our national security complex, and how our Constitution is eroding under our noses. Reflections on our way of life as it once was, as it is, and as it might become...these subjects and many more are covered with Mike Huckabee's signature wit, insight, and honesty.

  • Pages : 407 pages

Download or read book Hometown Texas written by and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown and Holley are interested in place and what makes people who they are. With particular interest in how people take the hand they’ve been dealt—fate, family, circumstance, luck—and craft a life for themselves, the authors celebrate the grit and gumption of these Texas originals. Introducing quirky characters and tenacious spirits, Holley’s stories seek out the personality of the small town while Brown’s photographs capture the essence of a changing landscape. Hometown Texas aims not to be nostalgic or sentimental but rather to show readers an unknown Texas—one that, while not vanishing, is certainly on the wane. Organized into five topographical, geographic, and cultural sections—East, West, North, South, and Central—three dozen stories and more than eighty complementary images work to create a parallel narrative to reveal what Brown has described as the “collective, various, remarkably complex soul that makes Texas unique.” Hometown Texas is an exploration across miles and cultures, of well-traveled roads and forgotten byways, deep into the heart of Texas.

Book God Guns and Guts of Firearm Defense

Download or read book God Guns and Guts of Firearm Defense written by Sig Swanstrom and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This isn't a feel-good churchy pie-in-the-sky treatment of this subject. It's a needed expose of what the Bible actually teaches about these sometimes controversial topics. It also focuses on the Bible beliefs and faith of the Founding Fathers of the United States, and the original meaning of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In the process, it brings greater clarity to these much debated topics. You won't be subjected to gory details in this book, but you will be exposed to the difficult choices which surround firearm defense. Importantly, you'll be given the biblical tools needed for making hard, life and death moral choices. You've probably never heard a pastor or church leader teach on this topic. Yet it is critically important for us to understand what the Bible actually has to say about these timely issues. Subjects such as our God-given Right of self-defense, firearm ownership, concealed carry, castle doctrines, the use of deadly force, and shoot-to-kill or shoot-to-wound, are all pivotal issues for us today. Many are shocked to learn that these topics are addressed in the Bible. This book explains the Bible viewpoint, and what Jesus taught on these subjects which today are taboo in most churches. Bible passages are cited throughout, and hundreds more are included in footnotes, keeping the focus on the Bible not personal opinion. The author, SIG SWANSTROM, is a former police detective and SWAT team operator who worked in the Los Angeles area. During his years of service, he personally had many deadly force encounters with armed criminals, so his writing is real world. And today, as the owner of a highly acclaimed firearms training academy in Texas, SIG has also learned how to capture the interest of his audiences as he teaches practical skills in the unique context of biblical truth."

Book Oh My God Guns and Country

Download or read book Oh My God Guns and Country written by Chad Rea and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having spent more than two decades creating ad campaigns for over 170 brands, Chad Rea likes to think he knows a good slogan when he sees one. And while this one isn't exclusive to the Lone Star Red State, or officially blessed, Chad says "God, guns, and country" sums up the Texas brand pretty darn well - if not one half of The Divided States. Depending on which piece of cheap, imported merch you come across, the country part of the phrase can be interpreted to mean country music, 'Merica, or the country of TEXAS. Sometimes you'll see "country" replaced with words like guts, glory, oil, or breakfast tacos, but the two parts you just don't mess with are God and guns. Them's fighting words. And, despite spending his formative years in El Paso and San Antonio as a gun-shootin', church-goin' conservative, and then returning twice in his well-traveled adult life to Lubbock, Dallas, and now Austin, Chad's chosen to fight the good fight. With art.As an artivist, "God, guns, and country" are like trigger words for Chad, providing fuel for much of the themes behind his work - be it related to politics, violence, mental health, mortality, climate change, or other matters of the bleeding heart. Perhaps a more accurate title for this 5ish-year collection of curated works would've been "Spirituality, social issues, and place." Although, he's pretty sure that's California's slogan, and Chad would hate for his neighbors to think he was born there. Shhh.

Book God Guns and Sedition

Download or read book God Guns and Sedition written by Bruce Hoffman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shocking acts of terrorism have erupted from violent American far-right extremists in recent years, including the 2015 mass murder at a historic Black church in Charleston and the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. These incidents, however, are neither novel nor unprecedented. They are the latest flashpoints in a process that has been unfolding for decades, in which vast conspiracy theories and radical ideologies such as white supremacism, racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, and hostility to government converge into a deadly threat to democracy. God, Guns, and Sedition offers the definitive account of the rise of far-right terrorism in the United States—and how to counter it. Leading experts Bruce Hoffman and Jacob Ware trace the historical trajectory and assess the present-day dangers of this violent extremist movement, along with the harm it poses to U.S. national security. They combine authoritative, nuanced analysis with gripping storytelling and portraits of the leaders behind this violence and their followers. Hoffman and Ware highlight key terrorist tactics, such as the use of cutting-edge communications technology; the embrace of leaderless resistance or lone-wolf strategies; infiltration and recruitment in the military and law enforcement; and the movement’s intricate relationship with mainstream politics. An unparalleled examination of one of today’s great perils, God, Guns, and Sedition ends with an array of essential practical recommendations to halt the growth of violent far-right extremism and address this global terrorist threat.
