Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing a book is an exciting project especially when the topic is so close to home. My life story, how exciting can that be? I found it very appealing. But was there something about my story that would appeal to anyone else? Born a twin in Honolulu, Hawaii, just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, I experienced a truly loving family. My dad and mom, John, and Ella Mendiola loved each other, and it rubbed off on all of us. We all went to Catholic schools, and Star of the Sea became the focal point of our lives. The Marist Fathers and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur were part of our family. So it was that I became a Sister of Notre Dame, went off to serve God in California and back in Hawaii, and finally, across the world at the equator in Kenya. Then the whole world changed again for me. I exchanged the nun's veil for the bride's veil! God had decided to reward me for my twenty years of faithful service. He gave me Gilbert Gicaru Githere. And I said, "Thank You, God. Mahalo nui loa."
Download or read book Pinstripe Empire written by Marty Appel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now Updated Through the 2020 Season An exciting history of the world's greatest baseball team from a former Yankees Public Relations Officer. "A riveting and comprehensive history of the Yankees" – New York Times Is there a sports team more synonymous with winning than the New York Yankees? The team of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Ford, Mantle, Jackson, Mattingly? Of Torre, Jeter, and Rivera? Of forty American League pennants, twenty-seven World Championships, and nearly forty Hall of Famers? Like so many great American institutions, the Yankees began humbly, on the muddy, uneven grass of Hilltop Park. Eighteen years later the little second-class franchise won its first pennant. Today, the Yankees are worth more than a billion dollars. It's been nearly seventy years since Frank Graham wrote the last narrative history of the Yankees. Marty Appel, the Yankees' PR director during the 1970s, now illuminates the team in its hundred-plus years of glory: clever, maneuvering owners; rowdy, talented players; great stories behind the great stories. Appel heard tales from old-timers like Waite Hoyt, Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, and Whitey Ford, and has remained close to the organization ever since. He gives life to the team's history, from the demise of Hilltop Park in the 1900s to the evolution of today's team as an international brand. With a wealth of photographs, this is a treasure trove for lovers of sports, the Yankees, New York history, and America's game.

Download or read book The Many Cinemas of Michael Curtiz written by R. Barton Palmer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Director Michael Curtiz was the mastermind behind some of the most iconic films of classical Hollywood—Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Sea Hawk, White Christmas, and Mildred Pierce, to name only a few. The most prolific and consistently successful Hollywood generalist with an all-embracing interest in different forms of narrative and spectacle, Curtiz made around a hundred films in an astonishing range of genres: action, biopics, melodramas/film noir, musicals, and westerns. But his important contributions to the history of American film have been overlooked because his broadly varied oeuvre does not present the unified vision of filmmaking that canonical criticism demands for the category of “auteur.” Exploring his films and artistic practice from a variety of angles, including politics, gender, and genre, The Many Cinemas of Michael Curtiz sheds new light on this underappreciated cinematic genius. Leading film studies scholars offer fresh appraisals of many of Curtiz’s most popular films, while also paying attention to neglected releases of substantial historical interest, such as Noah’s Ark , Night and Day, Virginia City, Black Fury, Mystery of the Wax Museum, and Female. Because Curtiz worked for so long and in so many genres, this analysis of his work becomes more than an author study of a notable director. Instead, The Many Cinemas of Michael Curtiz effectively adds a major chapter to the history of Hollywood’s studio era, including its internationalism and the significant contributions of European émigrés.

Download or read book The Pledge written by Jeffrey Owen Jones and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural and political history of the Pledge of Allegiance, how it came to be, what it means to Americans, and why we have battled over it for generations For more than a century, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance has been a central part of the American Experience. And perhaps because of its ubiquity, this simple flag salute has served not only as a unifying ritual but also as a lightning rod for bitter controversy. Congress's 1954 decision to add "under God" to the Pledge has made it the focus of three U.S. Supreme Court cases and at least one other landmark appellate decision. The debate continues today, but along with it exists a widely held admiration and support for this simple affirmation of our shared patriotism. As Jeffrey Owen Jones and Peter Meyer show in their illuminating history, this brief salute to the flag has had an almost magical power to galvanize people's deepest feelings and beliefs about who we are and ought to be as a nation. In that sense, the story of the Pledge of Allegiance is the story of America and the American people.

Download or read book Save America Now written by Michael Master and published by . This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of Americans are tired of the radical ideologues intent on surrendering our national sovereignty, and are refusing to accept nationalizing our financial, auto, energy and healthcare industries. And these same Americans are concerned about the massive debt that will be left for their children and grandchildren. Today, the political debate and dialogue is dominated by a radical agenda to change America from what it has been to something very different, something we will not recognize, and something future generations will hardly find appealing. To turn this tide, a majority of Americans must unite and educate others to thwart this agenda. In Save America Now!, Michael Master is asking us to join forces in a common cause to save the America of our Founders. He implores patriotic Americans to be steadfast in proclaiming their resolve to preserve America and to stand together for the principles that have made the United States the greatest, most prosperous and most generous nation in history. Save America Now! offers hope that, by working together against very challenging opponents, the destructive changes that are sweeping across our land can be reversed.

Download or read book Varieties of Exile written by Mavis Gallant and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mavis Gallant is the modern master of what Henry James called the international story, the fine-grained evocation of the quandaries of people who must make their way in the world without any place to call their own. The irreducible complexity of the very idea of home is especially at issue in the stories Gallant has written about Montreal, where she was born, although she has lived in Paris for more than half a century. Varieties of Exile, Russell Banks's extensive new selection from Gallant's work, demonstrates anew the remarkable reach of this writer's singular art. Among its contents are three previously uncollected stories, as well as the celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence about Linnet Muir—stories that are wise, funny, and full of insight into the perils and promise of growing up and breaking loose.
