Book excerpt: Sir Robert Menzies was driven by a passionate belief in individual freedom, personal responsibility and human dignity. In God & Menzies, David Furse-Roberts reveals the Judeo-Christian origins of Menzies' empowering Liberal philosophy that became embedded in Australia's cultural DNA. God & Menzies is essential reading for everybody who seeks a deeper understanding of Australian liberalism and the place of religion in a secular society. 'David Furse-Roberts has established himself as one of Australia's leading Menzies experts with this spiritual-intellectual biography of Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister. The depth of the research and scope of the themes makes this book the benchmark for future religious biographies of Australian statespeople...' - Dr Stephen Chavura, Lecturer at Campion College. 'God & Menzies is a scholarly study of how Robert Menzies' deeply considered Christian faith informed his commitment to the principles of secular liberalism and served as the lodestar that guided his consequential career. Furse-Roberts has written a timely reminder that Christianity has long been an integral component of Australia's vibrant secular democracy.' - Rev Peter Kurti, Centre for Independent Studies. 'In an era when religion in an overt sense is essentially marginal to political life, this important study is deeply revealing of its significance in the Australian nation throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century. Moreover, it makes a major contribution in demonstrating Sir Robert Menzies' leadership in ridding Australia of the curse of sectarianism.' - Adjunct Professor J. R. Nethercote, Australian Catholic University.

Book excerpt: 'Mark Vickers has given us a wonderful new reference book of the beliefs (and non-beliefs) of 20th-century PMs - a meaty volume that can also be consumed as a social history of British religion.' THE TELEGRAPH 'This carefully researched and well-written study reveals the religious faith of our Prime Ministers, or lack of it, in vivid colours. Prepare to be shocked and surprised as the author lays bare their souls.' SIR ANTHONY SELDON Mark Vickers' acclaimed volume on the faith of the twentieth-century Prime Ministers casts a new perspective on these holders of the highest political office in the realm. While there are biographies aplenty on the 18 men and 1 woman who took up residence behind the famous black door, it is notable that that many of these works fail to reflect an important - sometimes the most important - aspect of the life of their subject. God in Number 10 rectifies this omission, offering intriguing insights into Margaret Thatcher's legendary 'Sermon on the Mound', Tony Blair's perception of Jesus as a modernizer, Arthur Balfour's recourse to spiritualism, Stanley Baldwin's mystical experiences, and Winston Churchill's involvement with astrology. The book considers the role of religion generally in the political classes of the period, the reasons for the declining influence of faith in the public forum, and the relationship between Church and State. The families of H. H. Asquith, Bonar Law, Ramsay MacDonald, Neville Chamberlain, Harold Macmillan, Alec Douglas-Home and Harold Wilson have all expressed their support for God in Number 10 and, where able, helped in the research, while John Major has assisted fully.

A Glorious Ride: From Jumble Plains to Eternity is an inspiring story of rolled up sleeves, practical faith and a resolute determination to give life a go. Tony McLellan grew up on a sheep station mending fences and killing rabbits. It turned out to be the perfect apprenticeship for a business high-flyer who crossed the Atlantic on the Concorde as casually as most people catch a bus. A crisis in his business and family life at the age of 47 taught him the deeper meaning of achievement: The path to a truly successful life begins when you focus on serving others. A Glorious Ride is an antidote for the dismal secularism of our times and a rallying cry against despair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important and compelling book on the viral dissemination of misinformation in today's world. We are being swamped with dangerous nonsense. From 9/11 conspiracy theories to Holocaust denial to alternative medicine, we are all experiencing an epidemic of demonstrably untrue descriptions of the world. For Damian Thompson, the misinformation industry is wreaking havoc on the once-lauded virtues of science and reason. Unproven theories and spurious claims are forms of "counterknowledge," and, helped by the Internet, they are creating a global generation of misguided adherents who repeat these untruths and lend them credence. Thompson explores our readiness to accept falsehoods and the viral role of technology in spreading quack remedies, pseudo-history, and creationist fanaticism. Following in the footsteps of Richard Dawkins's The God Delusion, Sam Harris's The End of Faith, and Christopher Hitchens's God Is Not Great, Counterknowledge is a brilliant defense of scientific proof in an age of fabrication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptized in the Spirit creatively examines the most recent trends in Pentecostal and charismatic theology, especially with regard to the displacement of Spirit baptism as Pentecostalism’s central distinctive. The author begins by focusing on the significance of the Holy Spirit in reciprocal and mutual work with the Son in fulfilling the will of the Father. He also shows how the pneumatological emphases in Pentecostal and charismatic theology can help to correct the tendency in Western Christianity to subordinate the Spirit to the Word.

Download or read book The Faith of Joseph written by Skhumbuzo Ngozwana and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for these times. In an increasingly polarized world, many people face daily challenges and difficulties. When visited by the vicissitudes of life; they find it difficult to get up, push on and persevere. Their lives have become a seesaw characterized by suffering and sorrow, trials and tribulations, pain and purgatory on earth. Many are lost, most are driven to despair, desperation and desolation. Life loses its meaning; joy is squeezed out of all existence. Every day is another dance with torment and torture. Today is another date with the persecution chamber, and tomorrow a desolate and barren desert. Unaware that the wilderness is the birthing place of greatness, and devoid of any new ideas to escape the pain and suffering of today, the future looks bleak, and many have given up on life itself - and surrender too early to what they consider a hopeless and meaningless existence; perhaps out of embarrassment, fear and even shame. They lose sight of the hope and promise of tomorrow; and fail to understand that the darkest hour is before dawn; and that the sun will shine again in their lives!!This book is for them. Joseph's life story gives us hope - sold into slavery by the brothers he loved, accused of crimes he did not commit, sentenced to a jail and in the dungeons of Pharaoh in a foreign land, he remained diligent, principled, hopeful, joyous and kept his faith in the Living God. The story of Joseph is all at once a story of pain, suffering, rejection and denial. But it is also a story of hope, of promise for a better tomorrow, of survival and of perseverance and courage in the face of great struggle. More than anything else, it is a story of hope and unshakable faith in the promises of God; in the sanctity of his covenant; and in the glory that awaits his anointed. It is a story of triumph and redemption; of forgiveness and healing. It is a beautiful story that restores our hope in tomorrow, and tells us that the pit of today will make way for the palace of tomorrow; that the slave of today will become the Sire of tomorrow, and that the prisoner of today will become the prime minister of tomorrow. Success is inevitable!! This is a book for both the believer and the non-believer. It is a book that affirms that fidelity to the truth, a commitment to one's values and obedience to a God given vision will carry us through to triumph. May it bless you and may it light your path; hold the promise of peace, joy and prosperity for you tomorrow!

Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Book Secret State

Download or read book Secret State written by Julian Grill and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian's book, Secret State, was researched and written over almost a decade. It details the strenuous and doubtfully legitimate program waged by WA's Corruption and Crime Commission against him and former WA Premier Brian Burke. The CCC campaign was largely based on covet surveillance, including phone taps, hidden recording devices and cameras, secret grossly unfair inquisitions - and public hearings that were used to create media stories and damage witnesses' credibility. The decade-long CCC operation occasioned a media storm across Australia, but was ultimately fruitless. However, the over hyped vendetta created extensive personal and reputational damage to Julian and Brian, and their families, friends and associates - including a host of blameless senior public servants who had routine or incidental contacts with the two CCC targets. Secret State sets the record straight. Julian's attention to accuracy and detail, and his entertaining literary style, make it a significant contribution to WA's legal and social history in the early decades of the 21st Century. After graduating from the University of Western Australia, Julian Grill practised as a barrister and solicitor in WA's Goldfields region, involved intensively in criminal defence and mining law. In 1977, representing the Australian Labor Party, he was elected to the WA Legislative Assembly. During his 24 years in Parliament he held many ministerial portfolios. After retiring from Parliament in 2001, Julian served as the chairman and non-executive director of several publicly listed companies. He also established Julian Grill Consulting, providing legal, strategic and government relations advice to an extensive list of corporate clients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. MERLIN L. NEFF.

Book Sir Robert Askin

Download or read book Sir Robert Askin written by Paul Loughnan and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Robert Askin, Liberal Premier of New South Wales from 1965 to 1975, was the longest serving and most successful Liberal Premier winning four elections in a row and who retired at a time of his own choosing. He came from a modest but happy family background, won a state bursary to secondary college, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and served in New Guinea. He was a natural for politics - he liked people, fellowship, was a good judge of character, and given his background, understood the real needs of the general public. Unfortunately, Askin's reputation has been overshadowed by long standing allegations of corruption. This monograph by Dr Paul Loughnan based on his extensive research for his doctorate on Askin, sets the record straight. Paul's youth was bookended by Askin's 1965-75 premiership which ignited his interest in Sir Robert and his government. This monograph informs us about Askin's character and achievements, but more importantly, demolishes once and for all the myths concerning his alleged corruption. They are just not true. So, this monograph allows us to see Askin for the first time for what he really was - a great leader, an astute pragmatic politician who steered his party to successes which have not been matched since.

Book excerpt: Are you one of the millions who know there is something terribly wrong with the politically correct era we are in now? In this restrictive and too often cruel unjust world with its ideologically-driven censorship and merciless 'cancel culture', its increasing dystopian dysfunctionality, its threats to our democratic freedoms and its hostility towards so much of what made Western civilisation so dynamic, innovative, prosperous, tolerant, inclusive and successful, here is an account of a key dimension of this calamity, what went wrong in our high schools. Importantly, the sections of this book clearly explaining political correctness and postmodernism go beyond understanding education to help you to understand these terms and make sense of the world we live in. In regards to education, what is really going on in curricula and classrooms is revealed and explained. Every student, parent and grandparent needs to know this. As a private tutor since 1990, Dr Mark Lopez has been able to observe and reveal what the education bureaucrats don't want you to know but you need to know. The flawed but dominant progressive educational methodologies are explained and their negative impact is powerfully illustrated with the experiences of real students. Written in the spirit of the Enlightenment, in a clear, insightful and engaging style, at times you may find yourself laughing or crying as you discover that all your suspicions are confirmed. This devastating critique of the education system reveals it as characterised by irrationality, timewasting, and a stifling political correctness. The costs and ramifications of this are extensive. This led to Dr Lopez's inevitable conclusion regarding the state of education in the politically correct era: 'School sucks'.

Book Fatima the Play

Download or read book Fatima the Play written by Beverley Cains and published by . This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary, our heavenly mother always leads us to her son, Jesus. In 1917 she visited three children in the small town of Fatima, Portugal, to share with them the message of salvation for the world. 'Fatima - The Play' is aimed at engaging young people to experience excitement in learning about their faith through the stories of ordinary children at an extraordinary time. Not all can make a pilgrimage to Fatima or Lourdes, but many Schools and Parish Groups will be able to simulate the wonders of the Apparitions of Fatima for their Communities with some help from the new "Technagers"!! "The play provides an accessible vehicle to share and understand this hundred-year-old story using a modern scene transposed over the traditional story. The structure and language of the play engages the students and provides a powerful introduction for further discussion and investigation." -- Judy Spence, Principal, Holy Trinity School, Curtin, ACT "Bev Cains' Fatima play is an impressive re-enactment of an interior story. It dramatises the religious faith of three children, which is tested by the scepticism of others until it is finally shown to illuminate the darkness of their time - and now of our time as well, in this centenary year of the apparitions of Our Lady. The play will engage the interest of upper primary school children in particular. Not only are the main characters appealing in their spiritual openness to the message of Fatima, but the structure of the play provides many scenes for audience participation. It deserves to be performed widely." -- Karl Schmude, Campion College "Children tend to be open and interested in the supernatural and the Fatima Play helps children to explore this realm. Mary our good mother is always leading us to her son Jesus, which is the reason of her visit to the three little shepherds at Fatima last century. Her message remains the same today - follow Jesus and pray. The play delivers Mary's message in a way children can enjoy as they participate. They will sense they are part of something important which is much bigger than themselves. Many people aren't aware of Our Lady's visits to her children - the Fatima Play shares the story in a way we can all appreciate and learn." -- Anne Hartwell, Mothers Prayers Australia Coordinator 'Fatima - The Play' written by Beverley Cains is an excellent example of how to employ the art of theatre in the propagation of the message from Fatima. -- Fr. Damian Mosakowski, osppe, Rector of the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy - Penrose Park

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Catholic Church is languishing in much of the West, by contrast it flourishes across Africa. Despite this, most African Church leaders remain unknown in the West, even among better informed Catholics. Sally Ninham's timely book remedies this via her in-depth interviews with a cross section of Africa's senior Catholic churchmen. Their stories provide first-hand insights into the religious, political, social and economic situations in their countries. Some of these leaders have played key roles in the midst of political turmoil, civil wars, rampant corruption and extreme poverty. Dr Ninham, who travelled around Africa for the interviews, believes some have perhaps already earned the right to stand alongside such Western heroes as Martin Luther King, Franklin Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. They are men who have committed their lives to justice, to freedom and to humanity without pausing for breath." What are they saying about Ten African Cardinals: "Dr. Sally Ninham has put a lot of energy in transforming her insight into an exceptional book. By spotlighting the top leaders of the Church in Africa, with an open heart and a positive attitude, she offers the world a path into this misrepresented continent. Africa will be grateful to her for this initiative." -- Paul Bere S.J., Professor of Scripture at the Jesuit Theology College, Ivory Coast"

This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bandar-Log: A Labor Story of the 1950s is a fictionalised recreation of the great Labor split of the 1950s. This schism in Labor's ranks began in October 1954 when its erratic federal party leader Dr H.V. ("Doc") Evatt denounced the perceived influence wielded over the party by the anti-communist Catholic activist B.A. ("Bob") Santamaria. The resulting donnybrook involved personality clashes as well as ideological conflict. The messy saga featured a diverse array of participants including Catholic churchmen, trade union bosses, state premiers, state and federal Labor politicians and assorted commentators and journalists. The characters appearing in The Bandar-Log mirror, with varying degrees of faithfulness, these actual participants in the Labor split. - Ross Fitzgerald and Stephen Holt, from the Introduction
