Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To one not familiar with the Russian language the accessible data relative to the external life of Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoi, the author of this book, are, to say the least, not voluminous. His name does not appear in that heterogeneous record of celebrities known as The Men of the Time, nor is it to be found in M. Vapereau's comprehensive Dictionnaire des Contemporains. And yet Count Leo Tolstoi is acknowledged by competent critics to be a man of extraordinary genius, who, certainly in one instance, has produced a masterpiece of literature which will continue to rank with the great artistic productions of this age. Perhaps it is enough for us to know that he was born on his father's estate in the Russian province of Tula, in the year 1828; that he received a good home education and studied the oriental languages at the University of Kasan; that he was for a time in the army, which he entered at the age of twenty-three as an officer of artillery, serving later on the staff of Prince Gortschakof; and that subsequently he alternated between St. Petersburg and Moscow, leading the existence of super-refined barbarism and excessive luxury, characteristic of the Russian aristocracy. He saw life in country and city, in camp and court.

Download or read book God Man and Tolstoy written by Predrag Cicovacki and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Leo Tolstoy's struggle to understand the relationship of God and man, in connection with his attempt to answer questions regarding the meaning of life. Tolstoy addressed such issues in a systematic way and with great concerns for the future of humanity. Predrag Cicovacki approaches Tolstoy both as a thinker and as an artist, and examines various sides of his intellectual and artistic engagement: his social criticism, his ambiguous relationship to nature, his understanding of art, and his attempted reconstruction of the true religion. By combining philosophical, religious, and literary analysis, Cicovacki undertakes an interdisciplinary study, showing much can be learned from Tolstoy's insights, as well as from his mistakes. Predrag Cicovacki is Professor of Philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross, USA. He is the author of eleven books, including Dostoevsky and the Affirmation of Life (2012), Gandhi's Footprints (2015), The Luminosity of Love (2018), and The Meaning of Life. A Quick Immersion (2021). "Predrag Cicovacki, a professor of peace and conflict studies, is perfectly situated to guide us through Tolstoy's powerful, often infuriating practical ethics. Blending theology with anthropological argument, he suggests that Tolstoy insisted above all that we cease to mutilate: ourselves, the world, the resources of the present and the meaning of love. Not an easy task and Tolstoy can be a stubborn mentor, but Cicovacki makes a subtle, respectful, even-handed case." -Caryl Emerson, A. Watson Armour III University Professor Emeritus of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Princeton University, USA "Combining the resources of a trained philosopher with an ear for a great writer, Predrag Cicovacki has produced an insightful and panoramic evaluation of Tolstoy the God-driven man who found meaning in becoming a "slave" - of God, not of man, of the divine truth, not of the fictions of humankind. An impressive achievement." -John D. Caputo, Professor Emeritus, Syracuse University, USA, and author of In Search of Radical Theology: Expositions, Explorations, Exhortations and Cross and Cosmos: A Theology of Difficult Glory. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kingdom of God Is Within You is Leo Tolstoy's follow-up to his powerful book entitled, My Religion. Tolstoy became very interested in Christianity and the teachings of Jesus Christ later in life, and he applied what he learned as a student to teach others the lessons he was then applying. We see a world fragmented and hateful to love and the golden rule of Christ. Tolstoy set about correcting this, and more of the message is communicated in this volume. Alan Lewis Silva has carefully and lovingly edited this edition to make it more openly accessible to English readers. This is a more direct edition that features a new arrangement of the book's chapters to prioritize Tolstoy's Christian development while retaining all the original chapters and content with editorial improvements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy kept one book invariably on his desk, read and reread it to his family, and recommended it to all his friends: a compendium of wise thoughts gathered over the course of a decade from his wide-ranging readings in philosophy and religion, and from his own spiritual meditations. It was banned under the Communists, and only one volume, A Calendar of Wisdom, drawn largely from the writings of other famous thinkers, has been published before in English. Wise Thoughts For Every Day is the volume comprising Tolstoy’s own most essential ideas about spirituality and what it is to live a good life. Designed by Tolstoy to be a cycle of daily readings, this book offers thoughts and aphorisms for every day according to a succession of themes repeated each month—such as God, the soul, desire, our passions, humility, inequality, evil, truth, happiness, prayer, and the blessings of love. At once challenging, comforting, and inspiring, this is a spiritual treasure trove and a book of great human warmth.
