The movement began, of course, with the Krefelders' settlement led by Francis Daniel Pastorius at Germantown in 1683. Hull's scholarly study of the Dutch Quaker immigration to Pennsylvania (and incidentally the German Quaker immigration) contains a number of appendices that give the names of all the settlers in Germantown during the years 1683-1709, with brief genealogical notices, including place of origin. These settlers originated from places as diverse as Holland, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Silesia, Switzerland, Transylvania, and Great Britain. Other appendices include names from a 1693 tax list and names of Germantown residents naturalized in 1691 and 1709. The author gives both the Dutch and the German forms of the names cited.

Rather than focusing upon the mass transatlantic migration or the movement of Britons towards British colonies, it examines the elite German migrants who progressed to India, especially missionaries, scholars and scientists, businessmen and travellers. The story told here questions, for the first time, the concept of Europeans in India. Previous scholarship has ignored any national variations in the presence of white people in India, viewing them either as part of a ruling elite or, more recently, white subalterns. The German elites undermine these conceptions. They developed into distinct groups before 1914, especially in the missionary compound, but faced marginalisation and expulsion during the First World War.

Advanced materials applied as pharmaceutical excipients in designing drug delivery systems can help solve problems concerning the required drug release—with the defined dissolution rate and at the determined site. Novel drug carriers enable more effective drug delivery, with improved safety and with fewer side effects. Investigations concerning advanced materials represent a rapidly growing research field in material/polymer science, chemical engineering and pharmaceutical technology. Exploring novel materials or modifying and combining existing ones is now a crucial trend in pharmaceutical technology. Eleven articles included in the the Special Issue “Advanced Materials in Drug Release and Drug Delivery Systems” present the most recent insights into the utilization of different materials with promising potential in drug delivery and into different formulation approaches that can be used in the design of pharmaceutical formulations.
