Book Fatty Acids and Glycerides

Download or read book Fatty Acids and Glycerides written by A. Kuksis and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978-04-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advances in lipid biochemistry over the past 25 to 30 years have been dramatic and exciting. The elucidation of the pathways of fatty acid biosynthesis and oxidation, the delineation of the biogenesis of cholesterol from small-molecular weight precursors, the structure proof of simple and complex lipids from plants, animals, and microorganisms, are excellent examples of the spectacular advances made during the golden era of lipid biochemistry. The multifaceted discoveries in these diverse areas of study could be attributed to development of highly sophisticated column chromatographic techniques for separation and purification of simple and complex lipids. The advent of thin-layer chromatography as well as gas liquid chromatography provided an explosive impetus to research developments in this field. Concomitant advances in mass spectrometry allowed an interface with gas-liquid chromatography which spawned even greater insight into the structure of lipids. These eventful days of lipid chemistry nearly 25 years ago led to a relatively quiescent period wherein scientists applied these newly available techniques to investigation of the behavior of isolated (lipid) enzyme systems and to unraveling the intricacies of the metabolic behavior of lipids in the intact cell or whole organisms. Then, in the early 1960s, a decided change in research emphasis developed with the advent of a simple, reproducible procedure for the isolation of cell membranes.

Book The Determination of Esterified Fatty Acids in Glycerides Cholesterol Esters and Phosphatides

Download or read book The Determination of Esterified Fatty Acids in Glycerides Cholesterol Esters and Phosphatides written by W. D. Skidmore and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydroxamic acid reaction conditions for the determination of esterified fatty acids were modified to the extent that the variable factors involved were controlled so that the molar absorptivities per ester group for triglycerides, cholesteryl esters of long-chain fatty acids, and phosphatides were equivalent through 8 microequivalent ester. The amount of water present during the formation of hydroxamates was the most important single factor in obtaining equivalent color values with these 3 types of esters. The accuracy and precision of the method were well defined by showing that the optical density values for 5 different ester standards were on the identical straight line curve. Spectral curves between the wavelengths of 410 and 700 millimicron with standard carboxylic acid esters and Folch extracts of rat serum, rat liver, and human serum were qualitatively and quantitatively identical. A long chain cholesteryl ester must be used as one of the standard esters because of its solubility characteristics and water sensitivity. Cholesteryl acetate can not be used as a reliable representative in place of a long chain cholesteryl ester. (Author).

Book Lipid Metabolism

Download or read book Lipid Metabolism written by Salih Wakil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipid Metabolism focuses on the regulation and metabolism of lipids. This book is composed of 10 chapters that specifically deal with fatty acids, prostaglandins, glycerides, glycerophosphates, cholesterol, isoprenoids, and aromatic compounds. This text starts with an overview of fatty acid metabolism and its controlling factors. This topic is followed by discussions on the physiochemical aspects of oxidative metabolism of fatty acids, with a special emphasis on the role of carnitine in this process. A chapter highlights the several important aspects of higher plant lipid metabolism. Other chapters are devoted to the structures, biosynthesis, and metabolism of prostaglandins, bacterial lipids, phospholipids, glycerides, and steroids. The final chapters describe the biogenesis of aromatic substances through the polyketide path, including polyisoprenoid quinines and related compounds.

During this time there has been an upsurge of interest in the design, synthesis and characterization of increasingly more complex macrocyclic ligands and in the application of this knowledge to understanding molecular recognition processes in host-guest chemistry in ways that were scarcely envisioned decades earlier. In October 2016, Professor Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (author for chapter 22 "Contractile and Extensile Molecular Systems: Towards Molecular Muscles" by Jean -Pierre Sauvage, Vincent Duplan, and Frédéric Niess and 20 "Serendipity" by Paul R. McGonigal and J. Fraser Stoddart respectively) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside fellow Wiley author Bernard Feringa, for the design and synthesis of molecular machines.

  • ISBN : 1483141233
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Organic Chemistry written by S. K. Murthy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Chemistry: Made Simple provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry. A systematic approach to the subject is adopted with compounds classified according to the functional groups present. A non-mathematical approach is applied to the modern theories of chemical structure and bonding. Each chapter also contains a summary and most conclude with a set of problems. The book is organized into four parts. Part I provides introductory material, including the scope of organic chemistry and the architecture of atoms and molecules. Part II discusses aliphatic compounds such as hydrocarbons, halogen derivatives of the paraffins, and alcohols and ethers. Part III covers aromatic compounds including benzene and its derivatives; aromatic amines, diazo compounds, and dyes; and phenols and aromatic alcohols. Part IV deals with heterocyclic compounds, physiologically active compounds, and polymers. This book is written for persons with some knowledge of general or inorganic chemistry who wish to obtain an understanding of organic chemistry. The book more than covers the syllabus for the G.C.E. Advanced Level Chemistry course. It could serve as an organic chemistry textbook or companion reader for students studying for a Teacher's Certificate, Higher National Certificate or Advanced Chemical Technician's Certificate.
