Book excerpt: The Editorial Board of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology apparently did not hurry in suggesting production of a volume on glucagon since the present opus is number sixty-six in the series. This fact is even more striking if we consider that 34 volumes published over about eight years will separate the books on glucagon from those on insulin on library shelves, whereas only a few microns separate the cells manufacturing these two polypeptides within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas! Numerous factors have probably caused this dicrimination; four of them are: First, insulin deficiency or resistance is the cause of one of the most serious and distressing diseases, diabetes mellitus, which affects millions of people, whereas glucagon deficiency is apparently an extremely rare disorder, for which detailed reports are published of individual cases whenever they occur. Second, since its discovery in 1921 by BANTING and BEST, insulin has been irreplaceable for the treatment of the most severe forms of diabetes, whereas, in contrast, glucagon was until recently considered a relatively minor therapeutic agent. Third, whereas insulin is a compound which has been well characterized since the pioneering work of SANGER and its biosynthesis clearly identified by STEINER and his co-workers, glucagon, also well characterized chemically, has suffered from its parenthood with the so-called "glucagon-like immunoreactive substances", an incompletely defined series of immunologically related polypeptides present in the gut, the pancreas and some other parts of the body.

Book Glucagon in Gastroenterology

Download or read book Glucagon in Gastroenterology written by J. Picazo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was with very much pleasure that I accepted the invitation to chair this workshop on Glucagon in Gastroenterology. Not least among the reasons for my accepting was the fact that it would get me out from behind my administrator's desk at the univer sity and enable me to spend what promised to be a few refreshing hours in a field where so much is apparently happening. Another reason for my accepting was the attractiveness of the format planned for the workshop. It was to be a working event. The programme had been carefully planned to ensure that all aspects of the subject were covered and a very tight schedule was drawn up for we had to deal with the whole field in just one day. There was to be a small, truly international, list of participants, and, apart from those presenting papers, only two or three specially invited observers were to be present. Above all, perhaps, was the fact that the meeting was to be a multi disciplinary one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased to say once again that I was delighted at being invited to chair this Third International Workshop on Glucagon (Glucagon in 1987). The two previous ones were held in Madrid under the auspices of the Medical School of the Universidad Complutense of that city, the first in May 1978 and the second in October 1981, which resulted in two books (Glucagon in 1979, and Glucagon in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 1982, Gastroenterology, both published by MTP Press), where the mounting interest in and develop ments concerning the therapeutic applications of glucagon were reflected. This time the meeting was held in Barcelona under the auspices of the Escuela de Patologia Digestiva of the Universidad Aut6noma of Barcelona, a change that we especially welcomed because it is not very often that we are able to assemble in our city such a distinguished group of scientists from all over the world. As can be seen from the title of the present book, this workshop focussed once again on the current status of glucagon in gastroenterology and hepatology, because although much has been said and discussed about the subject already, it still raises exciting and intriguing issues for debate. There were two parts to this meeting. The gastroenterology session was concerned with the physiology and pathophysiology of glucagon in the gastrointestinal tract and its applications in diagnosis, endoscopy and radiology.

Book GLUCAGON Its Role in Physiology and Clinical Medicine

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in glucagon. almost universal among diabetologists. made the decision to hold a satellite symposium immediately after the IX Congress of the International Diabetes Federation easy. indeed almost unavoidable. The climate. the beauty of its uniquely picturesque canals and houseboats. of its lakes and its mountains and above all. the friendliness of its people made the choice of Sri nagar equally easy. Problems of transportation and housing which appeared of Himalayan proportions from thousands of miles away were resolved with deceptive ease: as if the late autumn sun of New Delhi and Sri nagar had melted the snow that already covered many areas of the United States. For this. we thank the Executive Council and the Scientific Program Advisory Committee of the Congress. the Chairman and Co-Chairman of the local committee, Drs. Ali Mohammed Jan and S. N. Ahmed Shah; the Organizing Secretary, Dr. Syed Zahoor Ahmed; the joint Secretary, Dr. M. Y. Alvi; the Secretary of the Scientific Session. S. N. Dhar and the other committee members, Drs. G. Q. Allaqband, Wm. Riberio, Girja Dhar, J. A. Naqashbandi and Messrs. D. P. Zutshi, K. Amla and Ajit Singh. We are deeply grateful to His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir for his interest in the symposium and for the unforgettable hospitality offered in the name of his people. The suggestions, criticism and understanding of many colleagues helped us select topics and speakers for a representative rather than a comprehensive program.

Book excerpt: Vertebrate Endocrinology represents more than just a treatment of the endocrine system-it integrates hormones with other chemical bioregulatory agents not classically included with the endocrine system. It provides a complete overview of the endocrine system of vertebrates by first emphasizing the mammalian system as the basis of most terminology and understanding of endocrine mechanisms and then applies that to non-mammals. The serious reader will gain both an understanding of the intricate relationships among all of the body systems and their regulation by hormones and other bioregulators, but also a sense of their development through evolutionary time as well as the roles of hormones at different stages of an animal's life cycle. - Includes new full color format includes over 450 full color, completely redrawn image - Features a companion web site hosting all images from the book as PPT slides and .jpeg files - Presents completedly updated and revitalized content with new chapters, such as Endocrine Disrupters and Behavioral Endocrinology - Offers new clinical correlation vignettes throughout

Book The Insulinotropic Gut Hormone Glucagon like Peptide 1

Download or read book The Insulinotropic Gut Hormone Glucagon like Peptide 1 written by Hans-Christoph Fehmann and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a promising new therapeutic tool for the treatment of diabetes. Since the first reports describing its potent insulinotropic activity were published about a decade ago, knowledge of the incretin hormones, and GLP-1 in particular, has increased significantly. This timely volume summarizes what is now known about the molecular biology, physiology and pharmacology of GLP-1. Thorough coverage is given to the physiology of the hormone, including its generation, release and actions at pancreatic and extrapancreatic tissues. The intracellular mechanisms of GLP-1 are also described in detail. Discussion of the molecular biology includes the structure and functions of the genes coding for proglucagon and the GLP-1 receptor. A special feature of the book is the clinical information provided which includes data on the expression and release of GLP-1 and its potential use as a therapeutic agent for diabetes. Presenting the results of exciting new research, this book will be a valuable reference for endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pharmacologists, physiologists and biochemists interested in this important hormone.

Book Recent Progress in Hormone Research

Download or read book Recent Progress in Hormone Research written by Roy O. Greep and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 33 covers the Proceedings of the 1976 Laurentian Hormone Conference. The book discusses the expanding significance of hypothalamic peptides; the LATS in Graves' disease; and the ontogenesis of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid function and metabolism in human, sheep, and rat. The text also describes the antimullerian hormone; the evolution of gonadotropin structure and function; and the biosynthesis of parathyroid hormone. The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance investigations of hormone structure and function; the regulation of vasopressin function in health and disease; and some considerations of the role of the antidiuretic hormone in water homeostasis are also considered. The book further tackles the clinical significance of circulating proinsulin and C-peptide; glucagon and the A cells; and a newly recognized pancreatic polypeptide. The text then encompasses the steroid hormone actions in tissue culture cells and cell hybrids and their relation to human malignancies; and the role of hormones on digestive and urinary tract carcinogenesis. Endocrinologists, neuroendocrinologists, and oncologists will find the book invaluable.

Book Activation and Desensitization of Transducing Pathways

Download or read book Activation and Desensitization of Transducing Pathways written by T.M. Konijn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activation by and desensitization to signals originating from the environment is common in all organisms, ranging from prokaryotes to higher eukaryotes. Recently, a number of novel mechanisms involved in activation and desensitization have been elucidated. The similarities of the molecular mechanisms of activation and desensitization in the various systems are striking. In the first book (1987) on this topic, the functional and structural similarities of the various mechanisms to attenuate the effect of an outward signal were emphasized. Justification to have a second book three years later is the explosive growth of information in the field. More components involved in signal transfer have been discovered and also that several more G-proteins appear to play a role during this process. The interest in signal attenuation concurs with these developments. The emphasis in this book is on the common signal transfer elements responsible for activation and desensitization in animals, plants and microorganisms.

Book Glucagon

  • Author : Ahmed Al-Jebawi
  • Publisher : Nova Science Publishers
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9781626181472
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Glucagon written by Ahmed Al-Jebawi and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the glucagon hormone, our knowledge of the pathophysiological changes of glucose metabolism has increased substantially. One of the first major breakthroughs in our understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetes occurred when patients with diabetic ketoacidosis were found to have very high glucagon levels. Since then, more observations confirmed hyperglucagonemia in diabetic patients. Despite the vast knowledge that we gained on glucagon, treating people with diabetes remained limited to replacing insulin, stimulating its secretion or improving its action for many years. Targeting glucagon pathway was not thought of as a valuable approach to treating diabetes until the first incretin mimetic was proved to be highly effective for not only stimulating the secretion of insulin but also for suppressing the glucagon secretion. The concept of bi-hormonal abnormality has changed the way we approach and treat diabetes. This book represents an extended and thorough review of glucagon biosynthesis and physiological effects. It also outlines the therapeutic options currently available to treat glucagon metabolic disorders. As it is intended for the whole scientific community, the material included was selected to be both clinical and scientific. It offers a unique integrative approach combining the expertise of the different specialties of endocrinology, physiology, cell biology, diabetes genetics and diabetes education.
