Book A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood

Download or read book A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood written by James P. Byrd and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Second Inaugural Address, delivered as the nation was in the throes of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that both sides "read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other." He wasn't speaking metaphorically: the Bible was frequently wielded as a weapon in support of both North and South. As James P. Byrd reveals in this insightful narrative, no book was more important to the Civil War than the Bible. From Massachusetts to Mississippi and beyond, the Bible was the nation's most read and respected book. It presented a drama of salvation and damnation, of providence and judgment, of sacred history and sacrifice. When Americans argued over the issues that divided them -- slavery, secession, patriotism, authority, white supremacy, and violence -- the Bible was the book they most often invoked. Soldiers fought the Civil War with Bibles in hand, and both sides called the war just and sacred. In scripture, both Union and Confederate soldiers found inspiration for dying-and for killing-on a scale never before seen in the nation's history. With approximately 750,000 fatalities, the Civil War was the deadliest of the nation's wars, leading many to turn to the Bible not just to fight but to deal with its inevitable trauma. A fascinating overview of religious and military conflict, A Holy Baptism of Fire and Blood draws on an astonishing array of sources to demonstrate the many ways that Americans enlisted the Bible in the nation's bloodiest, and arguably most biblically-saturated conflict.

Book excerpt: In Glory's Shadow explores the history of The Citadel, an institution set on preserving tradition in the face of profound change. Established as protection against slave insurrections feared by the white minority of Charleston, South Carolina, a generation later The Citadel was a school of privilege for young white men. Through two world wars it grew in size and reputation, proudly providing the United States with (male) military leaders, paying little heed to what was happening in the country around it. In 1993, when the school rescinded Shannon Faulkner's admission because of her gender, a landmark legal battle ensued. Faulkner won, and although she faced vicious harassment and left after a week, The Citadel was forced to reform: nearly 30 women have graduated since her brief time at The Citadel. In Glory's Shadow is an engrossing and illuminating look at this pivotal event in military history and the history of women.

Book Civil War Hospital Newspapers

Download or read book Civil War Hospital Newspapers written by Ira Spar, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine of the 192 Union military hospitals during the Civil War circulated newspapers edited and printed by convalescents. The horrors of wound infection and amputation were reported in the words of surgeons, nurses and patients. Sermons cautioned against drink, tobacco and profanity while stressing patriotic sacrifice. Those who experienced the war wrote about it in simple narratives, and these are extensively quoted. Convalescent life was painful and terrifying. Bedridden for months with fever and festering wounds, disabled veterans wondered who would respond to their needs. Who would hire them? Who would marry them? This book covers the founding and development of nine hospital newspapers, each fully explored for such topics as patriotism, politics, religion, satire, romance and marriage, battlefield experience and treatment of prisoners of war.

Book excerpt: The story you are about to read captured the imagination of the author in 1961 and has consumed many hours of his time since then. It was April 25, 1951 The last man standing between the Republic of South Korea and the remnants of an Army of 500,000 Chinese Communists that day was a youthful, blond haired, blue eyed Seventeen Year Old Charles L. Gilliland, Private, called "Gunsmoke," later Corporal US Army, 2nd Platoon, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division, near Tongmang Ni Village, Korea. Ironic it is that Gilliland should have been on a plane headed back to his home after six months of uninterrupted combat that started at the Chosin Reservoir then to Pusan Perimeter to Seoul Korea to the Imjim River. Below are some of the accolades that his mother, the United States Congress, the President of the United States, Military Superiors and others have said about him: distinguished; conspicuous: gallant; outstanding; courageous; beyond duty; refused medical attention; ordered back; Cpl. Gilliland covered withdrawal and held the enemy at bay; heroic actions; indomitable; devoted to duty; incredible valor; supreme sacrifice; lasting glory. If the above heroics was all there is to this youthful legend, that would be enough. But there is much more significant about Charles L Gilliland than fearless heroics. His relationships with his fox hole buddies, his mother and father and aunts and uncles, his brothers and sisters his classmates and life long friends, his education, and his personal religion all paint a heart warming story of how he became a legendary Medal of Honor Hero. Every reader will be astonished and inspired by the totality of the early years of Charles L Gilliland. The author, John Allen Johnson was born in Arkansas and his early education was in a one-room school at Westline where he and many cousins and siblings learned to read and write. He attended school in DeQueen, Arkansas and Prineville, Oregon. John is proud of the military heritage of his family. His father, Murray California volunteered for duty in World War I and his only brother enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II. Many, cousins, nephews, a grandson and other relatives have served and continue to serve in the military. After the Korean War John attended Texarkana College in Texarkana, Texas. In 1957 he earned a B A Degree in History from Ouachita University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In 1959 he earned his MA Degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. In 1997 he earned his Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Pacific Western University, Los Angeles, California. He completed a Level II Clear Special Education Credential at California State University, Sacramento, California. He taught in a Bay Area High Schools until he retired in 2006. This book was released on 2012-01-14 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press Military Monograph 15.Second Edition (January 2012).What is the definition of a “hero” in contemporary American society? What qualifies as a “heroic” act? What is the proper way to honor those individuals on whom we bestow the title of “hero”? With U.S. military personnel at war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, these questions take on greater relevance today than they did in the years that immediately preceded the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Although acts of valor take place daily on the battlefields of the Global War on Terrorism, the United States is struggling to find the right answers to these questions about heroism in the 21st century. In Here Rests in Honored Glory, Andrew DeKever, a veteran of the Iraq War, tackles these very issues. Chronicling the lives of ten recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for combat heroism, DeKever breaks ranks from similar books by focusing more on describing the men behind the uniform rather than on the few minutes of valor that immortalized them in the pages of American military history. As a result, Here Rests in Honored Glory reminds its readers that true heroes are ordinary men and women who, under the most horrific of circumstances, are able to dig deep and find the raw courage necessary to be brave “above and beyond the call of duty” towards protecting other people and serving a cause greater than themselves. By telling the ordinary lives of these extraordinary heroes, Here Rests in Honored Glory serves as a powerful reminder that all people, no matter what their background, possess the same potential for courage and self-sacrifice—attributes that should be devoted towards improving the nation these men risked and sacrificed their lives to protect. From the Preface by Michael J. Durant, Chief Warrant Officer 4 (ret.), U.S. Army, author of "In The Company Of Heroes" and "The Night Stalkers": "Gary Gordon's selfless actions and personal sacrifice, the sacrifice of each of the heroes chronicled in this work, and the sacrifices of countless others throughout our nation's history, can never be repaid, only honored. In researching each of these heroes and capturing the details of each of their lives, Andrew has done just that. I now understand not just what Gary Gordon did, but who he was. I can appreciate what drove him to serve in the Special Forces units he volunteered for and what drove him without hesitation to sacrifice his life for my crew. Through this work, Andrew has honored Gary and all of these men, their families, and their comrades. By helping us all understand the people behind these incredible stories, he's done this nation a great service."—Michael J. Durant Chief Warrant Officer 4, U.S. Army (Ret.)
