Download or read book Local and Metropolitan Communication Systems written by Toshiharu Hasegawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are witnessing an ever-increasing thrust toward the era of multimedia information networks, largely spurred by the U.S. Government's proposal for the National Information Infrastructure in the fall of 1993. While more people are subscribing to the services of narrowband ISDN, the implementation of broadband ISDN by means of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has accelerated since the formation of the ATM Forum in 1993. In the meantime, frame relay may prevail for inter-LAN connections. In the "upper layer" of the network, commercial use of Internet is rapidly emerging. To ensure the successful development of technology, it is vital to use a judicious approach in assessing the architecture and performance of the systems that implement the technology. It is this spirit that underlies the present conference, which is intended to provide an international forum for the presentation of recent research results in the area of local and metropolitan communication systems. This conference has two sets of predecessors. It is the third in a series of international conferences on Local and Metropolitan Communication Systems -LAN & MAN; the first was held in Toulouse in 1986 and the second in Palma de Mallorca in 1991. It is also the fourth in a triennial series organized by Kyoto University and others on the performance of communication-related systems; the previous ones were held in Tokyo (1985) and Kyoto (1988, 1991).

Download or read book Interconnections for Computer Communications and Packet Networks written by Roberto Rojas-Cessa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces different interconnection networks applied to different systems. Interconnection networks are used to communicate processing units in a multi-processor system, routers in communication networks, and servers in data centers. Queuing techniques are applied to interconnection networks to support a higher utilization of resources. There are different queuing strategies, and these determine not only the performance of the interconnection network, but also the set of requirements to make them work effectively and their cost. Routing algorithms are used to find routes to destinations and directions in what information travels. Additional properties, such as avoiding deadlocks and congestion, are sought. Effective routing algorithms need to be paired up with these networks. The book will introduce the most relevant interconnection networks, queuing strategies, and routing algorithm. It discusses their properties and how these leverage the performance of the whole interconnection system. In addition, the book covers additional topics for memory management and congestion avoidance, used to extract higher performance from the interconnection network.
Download or read book Self Organizing Maps written by Teuvo Kohonen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second, revised edition of this book was suggested by the impressive sales of the first edition. Fortunately this enabled us to incorporate new important results that had just been obtained. The ASSOM (Adaptive-Subspace SOM) is a new architecture in which invariant-feature detectors emerge in an unsupervised learning process. Its basic principle was already introduced in the first edition, but the motiva tion and theoretical discussion in the second edition is more thorough and consequent. New material has been added to Sect. 5.9 and this section has been rewritten totally. Correspondingly, Sect. 1.4, which deals with adaptive subspace classifiers in general and constitutes the prerequisite for the ASSOM principle, has also been extended and rewritten totally. Another new SOM development is the WEBSOM, a two-layer architecture intended for the organization of very large collections of full-text documents such as those found in the Internet and World Wide Web. This architecture was published after the first edition came out. The idea and results seemed to be so important that the new Sect. 7.8 has now been added to the second edition. Another addition that contains new results is Sect. 3.15, which describes the acceleration in the computing of very large SOMs. It was also felt that Chap. 7, which deals with 80M applications, had to be extended.

The first chapter is on radio wave propagation for emerging wireless personal communication systems. Chapter two contains a comprehensive study of emerging DSP-based interference rejection techniques for single channel (antenna) systems. Chapter three deals with spread spectrum wireless communications, explaining the concept of spread spectrum, modeling techniques for spread spectrum, and current applications and research issues for spread spectrum systems. Part II focuses on digital signal processing and spread spectrum, two means of creating interference and multipath robust communications. Part III concerns propagation aspects of wireless communications. Part IV discusses the performance of emerging wireless systems. Part V describes the opportunities and pitfalls of defense conversion from the perspective of several U.S. defense firms that have successfully made the transition to commercial wireless. The final section discusses a number of competitive issues regarding personal communication services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book collects the contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Speech Recognition and Understanding: Recent Advances, Trends and Applications", held in Cetraro, Italy, during the first two weeks of July 1990. This Institute focused on three topics that are considered of particular interest and rich of i'p.novation by researchers in the fields of speech recognition and understanding: Advances in Hidden Markov modeling, connectionist approaches to speech and language modeling, and linguistic processing including language and dialogue modeling. The purpose of any ASI is that of encouraging scientific communications between researchers of NATO countries through advanced tutorials and presentations: excellent tutorials were offered by invited speakers that present in this book 15 papers which sum marize or detail the topics covered in their lectures. The lectures were complemented by discussions, panel sections and by the presentation of related works carried on by some of the attending researchers: these presentations have been collected in 42 short contributions to the Proceedings. This volume, that the reader can find useful for an overview, although incomplete, of the state of the art in speech understanding, is divided into 6 Parts.
