Book Import Substitution Industrialization and the Effects of Globalization on the Manufacturing Sector in Zambia

Download or read book Import Substitution Industrialization and the Effects of Globalization on the Manufacturing Sector in Zambia written by Stephen Gumboh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ) (School of Business and Economics), course: Globalization and International Development, language: English, abstract: The paper discusses the essence of the Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI) policy adopted by the Zambian government prior to trade liberalization and the effects of globalization on the growth and development of manufacturing sector thereafter. Specifically, the paper analyses the merits and effectiveness of the ISI policy on the growth of the Zambia industry with particular emphasis on the impact of globalization and trade liberalization on the Zambian manufacturing sector and the government possible measures and instruments necessary to maximize the benefits of globalization. The paper proves the heavy impact of trade liberalization on the manufacturing sector in peak period of its implementation. As for the import substitution policy and the effects of globalization on the growth and development of manufacturing sector, the paper also cites these among many other factors as major attributes to a greater extent to the failure of the manufacturing sector to perform to expectation over the peak period of trade liberalization. Government policies to cushion itself from the effects of globalization and to revitalize the manufacturing sector are equally proved to have brought about some favorable results despite the many constraints that the sector has had to face over the years of trade liberalization. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for the government to continue pursuing policy measures strategically focused on the growth of the sector by seriously taking into consideration its backward and forward linkages in the economy.

Book Globalization and Poverty

Download or read book Globalization and Poverty written by Ann Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Book Globalisation and Africa in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Globalisation and Africa in the Twenty First Century written by Singumbe Muyeba and published by Author House. This book was released on 2008-02-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation and Africa in the Twenty First Century: A Zambian Perspective is a journey through space and times from Zambia, to Sub Saharan Africa, to the World and Back. It brings out from the author’s experiences growing up in Sub Saharan Africa during the 1990s, the ills in Zambian culture that manifested as a result of the effects of Structural Adjustment Programmes and how Zambia, once a rich and promising country became one of the poorest Nations in the world’s poorest region. As for Sub Saharan Africa’s survival in the twenty first century, Muyeba powerfully argues that without a transformation in the culture of its people, without surplus productivity and without international cooperation, the chances for survival in the twenty first century will continue to diminish even as they are already low.

Impacts of globalization and information technology are examined in terms of growth and productivity, poverty and income distribution, and employment. Experiences of Africa, East and Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America in the era of globalization are discussed. It is argued that benefits of freer trade and capital flows need to be managed carefully in order to minimise the costs and maximise gains.

Book Services Trade and Development

Download or read book Services Trade and Development written by Aaditya Mattoo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some see trade in services as irrelevant to the development agenda for least developed countries (LDCs). Others see few benefits from past market openings by LDCs. This book debunks both views. It finds that serious imperfections in Zambia's reform of services trade deprived the country of significant benefits and diminished faith in liberalization. What is to be done? Move aggressively and consistently to eliminate barriers to entry and competition. Develop and enforce regulations to deal with market failures. And implement proactive policies to widen the access of firms, farms, and consumers to services of all kinds. These lessons from Zambia are applicable to all LDCs. In all this, international agreements can help. But to succeed, LDCs mustcommit to open markets and their trading partners must provide assistance for complementary reforms. Zambia, which leads the LDC group at the World Trade Organization, can show the way.

Book Africa in the Age of Globalisation

Download or read book Africa in the Age of Globalisation written by Edward Shizha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of bold and visionary scholarship that reveals an insightful exposition of re-visioning African development from African perspectives. It provides educators, policy makers, social workers, non-governmental agencies, and development agencies with an interdisciplinary conceptual base that can effectively guide them in planning and implementing programs for socio-economic development in Africa. The book provides up-to-date scholarly research on continental trends on various subjects and concerns of paramount importance to globalisation and development in Africa (politics, democracy, education, gender, technology, global relationships and the role of non-governmental organisations). The authors challenge the familiar paradigms in order to show how imperfectly, if at all, assumptions about globalisation and development theories have failed in their depictions and applications to Africa. The scholars in this volume both inform and advocate for a re-visioning of perceptions on Africa and how it navigates global processes.
