Book Perspectives on CIMMYT s Future

Download or read book Perspectives on CIMMYT s Future written by International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and published by CIMMYT. This book was released on 2004 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the strategic planning process initiated in July 2002, CIMMYT commissioned the Meridian Institute to conduct an extensive consultation with more than 170 stakeholders worldwide, representing national agricultural research services, CGIAR Centers, advanced research institutes, the private sector, donor agencies, and representatives of farmer groups. The interviews elicited highly divergent opinions and valuable insights into how others perceive CIMMYT and its future. Overall, the consultations revealed that CIMMYT's products and activities are greatly appreciated and serve an apparent need. There was concurrence that CIMMYT has a comparative advantage in many areas - human resources and networks, breeding expertise and germplasm collections, and research and training programs - and that it should increase its collaborative efforts and ensure greater access to its products. Most of all, the stakeholders believed that for CIMMYT to survive and continue its history as a highly successful organization, it should move beyond discussion of new strategies and take decisive action toward real change.

Book Economic Analysis of Diversity in Modern Wheat

Download or read book Economic Analysis of Diversity in Modern Wheat written by Erika C.H. Meng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific breeding in the twentieth century greatly accelerated wheat`s evolution, producing high-yielding varieties that helped avoid famine in many developing countries. Emerging scientific tools hold promise for identifying and tapping new, useful genetic diversity within wheat`s primary and secondary gene pools and, through genetic engineering, beyond. The book describes generally how policies affect wheat genetic diversity; it looks at historical changes in wheat genetic diversity, as policy and priorities have evolved; it identifies factors that explain changes and differences in spatial diversity; and finally, it analyzes the productivity impacts of changes in diversity. Chapters define various types of crop genetic diversity and ways to measure them, framing the definitions and metrics in the contexts for which they are most relevant.

Book Plant Adaptation to Abiotic Stress From Signaling Pathways and Microbiomes to Molecular Mechanisms

Download or read book Plant Adaptation to Abiotic Stress From Signaling Pathways and Microbiomes to Molecular Mechanisms written by Radhouane Chaffai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: The book "Plant Adaptation to Abiotic Stress: From Signaling Pathways and Microbiomes to Molecular Mechanisms" comprehensively examines abiotic stressors--cold, heat, light, salinity, and water scarcity--across its 18 chapters. Focusing particularly on Arabidopsis thaliana, it investigates abiotic stresses, adaptation strategies, and molecular pathways. Furthermore, it addresses broader issues, including climate challenges, food security, water scarcity, and agricultural concerns such as soil acidity and aluminum stress. It proposes adaptive measures for cultivating stress-resistant crops and sheds light on genetic modification methods such as CRISPR-Cas9, integrating nanotechnology in plant breeding. Emphasizing transcription factors, post-translational protein modifications, and diverse noncoding RNAs (long noncoding RNAs, circular RNAs, microRNAs, and small interfering RNAs), the book highlights their role in regulating gene expression during stress responses. It specifically underscores secondary messengers, plant hormones, and MAPK cascades within intracellular signaling pathways. Additionally, it discusses the roles of endophytic bacteria and microbial interactions in bolstering stress resilience. The book explores state-of-the-art research methodologies in plant breeding, omics approaches, and nanotechnology integration for developing stress-resistant crop varieties, advocating for agricultural sustainability. Tailored for plant physiology scientists, academics, and postgraduate students, it amalgamates diverse research findings, serving as a pivotal resource to comprehend intricate plant responses to environmental challenges

Book Wheat in a Global Environment

Download or read book Wheat in a Global Environment written by Z. Bedo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat breeders have achieved significant results over the last fifty years in research on mankind's one of the most important crops. Classical genetic and breeding methods, far broader international cooperation than was experienced in earlier periods, and improvements in agronomic techniques have led to previously unimaginable development in the utilisation of wheat for human consumption. The contribution of wheat researchers is particularly noteworthy since these results have been achieved at a time when the world population has grown extremely dynamically. Despite this demographic explosion, of a proportion never previously experienced, thousands of millions of people have been saved from starvation, thus avoiding unpredictable social consequences and situations irreconcilable with human dignity. Despite these developments in many regions of the world food supplies are still uncertain and the increase in the world's wheat production has not kept pace with the population increase during the last decade. Due to the evils of civilisation and the pollution of the environment there is a constant decline in the per capita area of land suitable for agricultural production. Based on population estimates for 2030, the present wheat yield of around 600 million tonnes will have to be increased to almost 1000 million tonnes if food supplies are to be maintained at the present level.
