Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the most recent results from the field of quark-gluon structure of the nucleon, in particular how the spin of the nucleon is shared by its constituents. After very intriguing results from CERN and SLAC at the end of the 1980s, the last decade has seen a set of second-generation experiments at high energy accelerators that have yielded precise information on the solution of the 'Spin Crisis' - as well as opening up new questions. The articles are written by experts from the leading collaboration and theory groups as well as providing an expert summary of the state of the art, the book points the way to future research directions. Its main focus is on semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements of deep inelastic lepton scattering, which enables for the first time the determination of the flavor-separated quark spin distributions. Future developments on generalized parton distributions and their interpretation as well as the transverse spin structure are also covered. An indispensable volume for all working in hadronic physics.

Book First JAM Results on the Determination of Polarized Parton Distributions

Download or read book First JAM Results on the Determination of Polarized Parton Distributions written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum (JAM) collaboration is a new initiative aimed to the study of the angular-momentum-dependent structure of the nucleon. First results on the determination of spin-dependent parton distribution functions from world data on polarized deep-inelastic scattering will be presented and compared with previous determinations from other groups. Different aspects of global QCD analysis will be discussed, including effects due to nuclear structure, higher twist, and target-mass corrections, as well as the impact of different data selections.

Book Nucleon and Pion Gluon Parton Distribution Function from Lattice QCD Calculation

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parton distribution functions (PDFs) are important to characterize the structure of the hadrons such as protons and neutrons. The contribution to the structure from quarks has been studied in detail during the past few decades. The structure in the gluon sector is also important but less studied. For high-energy hadrons, the gluon contribution dominates at small x, where x is the momentum fraction carried by a quark or gluon. At large x, the uncertainty of the gluon PDF is large, especially compared to that of the quark PDFs at large x. Gluon PDFs for nucleons and pions are mostly extracted from global analysis of experimental data using perturbation theory as a guide. Theoretically, lattice QCD provides an independent non-perturbative theoretical approach to calculate the gluon PDFs. We present the exploratory study of nucleon gluon PDFs from lattice QCD using the quasi-PDF approach. Using valence overlap fermions on the 2 + 1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge ensemble, the quasi-PDF matrix elements we obtain agree with the Fourier transform of the global-fit PDF within statistical uncertainty. We further study the x-dependent nucleon and pion gluon distributions via the pseudo-PDF approach on lattice ensembles with 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by the MILC Collaboration. Using clover fermions for the valence action, and adding momentum smearing, PDFs are found for pion boost momenta up to 2.56 9́8 GeV. Several lattice sizes and spacings (a 9́8 0.9, 0.12 and 0.15 9́8 fm) were evaluated, resulting in three pion masses, MÏ0 9́8 220, 310 and 690 9́8 MeV/c2.

Book Comment on New Limits on Intrinsic Charm in the Nucleon from Global Analysis of Parton Distributions

Download or read book Comment on New Limits on Intrinsic Charm in the Nucleon from Global Analysis of Parton Distributions written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrinsic heavy quarks in hadrons emerge from the non-perturbative structure of a hadron bound state and are a rigorous prediction of QCD. Lattice QCD calculations indicate significant intrinsic charm and strangeness probabilities. Since the light-front momentum distribution of the Fock states is maximal at equal rapidity, intrinsic heavy quarks carry significant fractions of the hadron momentum. The presence of Fock states with intrinsic strange, charm, or bottom quarks in hadrons lead to an array of novel physics phenomena. Accurate determinations of the heavy-quark distributions in the proton are needed to interpret Tevatron and LHC measurements as probed of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Book Structure of Nucleon Excited States from Lattice QCD

Download or read book Structure of Nucleon Excited States from Lattice QCD written by Finn M. Stokes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) describes the interactions between elementary quarks and gluons as they compose the nucleons at the heart of atomic structure. The interactions give rise to complexity that can only be examined via numerical simulations on supercomputers. This work provides an introduction to the numerical simulations of lattice QCD and establishes new formalisms relevant to understanding the structure of nucleons and their excited states. The research opens with an examination of the non-trivial QCD vacuum and the emergence of “centre domains.” The focus then turns to establishing a novel Parity-Expanded Variational Analysis (PEVA) technique solving the important problem of isolating baryon states moving with finite momentum. This seminal work provides a foundation for future calculations of baryon properties. Implementation of the PEVA formalism discloses important systematic errors in conventional calculations and reveals the structure of nucleon excited states from the first principles of QCD for the first time.

Book The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon

Download or read book The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon written by Bernard Frois and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-02-24 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.
