Providing both quantifiable metrics and policy measures for the transition, it is a much needed addition to the literature on Chinese energy policy. The research and the resulting recommendations of this study have fed directly into the Chinese government’s 13th Five-Year Plan, and provide unique insights into the Chinese government and policy-making. Natural gas consumption is expected to stay high in 2030 and 2050 with an expected share of 23 %. Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas has the lowest CO2 emissions and is an important energy source for households and industries. It is used for heating, electricity, or as a fuel for vehicles.
