Book Global Knowledge Production in the Social Sciences

Download or read book Global Knowledge Production in the Social Sciences written by Wiebke Keim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative contribution to debates on the internationalization and globalization of the social sciences, this book pays particular attention to their theoretical and epistemological reconfiguration in the light of postcolonial critiques and critiques of Eurocentrism. Bringing together theoretical contributions and empirical case studies from around the world, including India, the Americas, South Africa, Australia and Europe, it engages in debates concerning public sociology and explores South-South research collaborations specific to the social sciences. Contributions transcend established critiques of Eurocentrism to make space for the idea of global social sciences and truly transnational research. Thematically arranged and both international and interdisciplinary in scope, this volume reflects the different theoretical and thematic backgrounds of the contributing authors, who enter into dialogue and debate with one another in the development of a more inclusive, more representative and more theoretically relevant stage for the social sciences. A rigorous critique of the contemporary state of the social sciences as well as an attempt to find another way of doing transnational sociology, Global Knowledge Production in the Social Sciences will appeal to scholars of sociology, political science and social theory with interests in the production of social scientific knowledge, postcolonialism and transnationalism in research.

Book excerpt: Global Knowledge Work is an up-to-date account of theoretical approaches and empirical research in the multi-disciplinary topic of global knowledge workers from a relational and diversity perspective. This informative volume includes contributions from international scholars and practitioners who have been working with the concept of global knowledge workers from a number of different perspectives, including personal and academic life trajectories. They reveal that the relational framework of the three dimensions of analysis (macro-meso-micro) is relevant for analyzing the phenomenon of global knowledge workers, as expertise and specialised knowledge and its innovative application, together with the attraction and retention of talent remain key topics in the current socioeconomic conditions. Book Global and Regional Dynamics in Knowledge Flows and Innovation

Download or read book Global and Regional Dynamics in Knowledge Flows and Innovation written by Chris Van Egeraat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation, which in essence is the generation of knowledge and its subsequent application in the marketplace in the form of novel products and processes, has become the key concept in inquiries concerning the contemporary knowledge based economy. Geography plays a decisive role in the underlying processes that enable and support knowledge formation and diffusion activities. Place specific characteristics are considered especially important in this context, however, more recently investigation into innovative capacity of places has also turned its attention to external knowledge inputs through innovation networks, and increasingly recognize the evolutionary character of the processes that lead to knowledge creation and subsequent application in the marketplace. The chapters that comprise this book are embedded at the intersection of the dynamic processes of knowledge production and creative destruction. The first three contributions all discuss the role of global innovation networks, in the context of territorial and/or sectoral dynamics, while the following two chapters investigate the evolution of regional or metropolitan knowledge economies. The final three contributions adopt a knowledge base approach in order to provide insight into the organisation of innovation networks and spatiality of knowledge flows. This book was published in a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Book The Power of Peer Learning

Download or read book The Power of Peer Learning written by Jean-H. Guilmette and published by Academic Foundation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancient Chinese proverb tells us "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." The same can be said for development assistance. Solutions provided by outside "experts" are often rejected or politely shelved. However, solutions based on the principle of "self-help" are far more likely to take root. This book explores the self-help, peer learning approach of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), comparing it with that of IDRC. It focuses on the importance of networks to development and growth, and demonstrates

Book Knowledge Actors and Transnational Governance

Download or read book Knowledge Actors and Transnational Governance written by D. Stone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diane Stone addresses the network alliances or partnerships of international organisations with knowledge organisations and networks. Moving beyond more common studies of industrial public-private partnerships, she addresses how, and why, international organisations and global policy actors need to incorporate ideas, expertise and scientific opinion into their 'global programmes'. Rather than assuming that the encouragement for 'evidence-informed policy' in global and regional institutions of governance is an indisputable public good, she queries the influence of expert actors in the growing number of part-private or semi-public policy networks.

Book excerpt: Through an examination of four agencies - the World Bank, the British Department for International Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency - the book explores what this new approach to aid means in both theory and practice.
