Book excerpt: In 2003 the People's Health Movement, the Global Equity Gauge Alliance and Medact came together to plan a review of the performance of the very institutions that normally write global reports. To turn the tables by reporting and assessing the actions of international health agencies such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the World Bank. It was time to produce an alternative world health report that would highlight the root causes of poor health and reveal the gap between humanitarian rhetoric and reality. This book presents a challenge to the major global bodies that influence health. The real scandal, it argues, is that the world lacks neither funds nor expertise to solve most of these problems. It is the predominance of conservative thinking and neoliberal economics that has led these institutions, established to promote social justice, into imposing policies and practices that, despite some important initiatives, are actually blocking any hope of meeting the UN's health-related Millennium Development Goals.

Book International Health Law

Download or read book International Health Law written by André den Exter and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2008 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, complex health care problems have remained unsolved. Conflicts between public interests and individual rights, evolving public health crises in low income countries, the challenge of regulating health professionals, and the effects of globalisation on health (care systems) dominate the contemporary debates in this field. In a way, these problems expose the (regulatory) weaknesses of health systems responding to these questions. Facing these problems, health lawyers and policy makers should - more than in the past - focus on underlying normative values in health care. Core values include solidarity and justice in health care access. International Health Law explores the underlying normative values of health systems from a global and local perspective. Apart from examining country experiences, the authors provide an interesting and valuable contribution to the (inter)national legal and health policy debate on guaranteeing equal access to health care facilities, resisting a market or consumer-driven movement. By explaining health systems in terms of access, solidarity and justice, International Health Law could contribute strengthening health systems, including equal access. Book jacket.

Book The World Health Report 2006

Download or read book The World Health Report 2006 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2006 World Health Report focuses on the chronic shortages of doctors, midwives, nurses and other health care support workers in the poorest countries of the world where they are most needed. This is particularly true in sub-Saharan Africa, which has only four in every hundred global health workers but has a quarter of the global burden of disease, and less than one per cent of the world's financial resources. Poor working conditions, high rates of attrition due to illness and migration, and education systems that are unable to pick up the slack reflect the depth of the challenges in these crisis countries. This report considers the challenges involved and sets out a 10-year action plan designed to tackle the crisis over the next ten years, by which countries can strengthen their health system by building their health workforces and institutional capacity with the support of global partners.
