Book excerpt: Feeding Frenzy traces the history of the global food system and reveals the underlying causes of recent turmoil in food markets. Supplies are running short, prices keep spiking, and the media is full of talk of a world food crisis. The turmoil has unleashed some dangerous forces. Food-producing countries are banning exports even if this means starving their neighbors. Governments and corporations are scrambling to secure control of food supply chains. Powerful groups from the Middle East and Asia are acquiring farmland in poor countries to grow food for export — what some call land grabs. This raises some big questions. Can we continue to feed a burgeoning population? Are we running out of land and water? Can we rely on free markets to provide? This book reveals trends that could lead to more hunger and conflict. But Paul McMahon also outlines actions that can be taken to shape a sustainable and just food system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the unsustainable modern diet—heavy in meat, wheat, and sugar—that requires more land and resources than the planet is able to support. We are facing a world food crisis of unparalleled proportions. Our reliance on unsustainable dietary choices and agricultural systems is causing problems both for human health and the health of our planet. Solutions from lab-grown food to vegan diets to strictly local food consumption are often discussed, but a central question remains: how did we get to this point? In Diet for a Large Planet, Chris Otter goes back to the late eighteenth century in Britain, where the diet heavy in meat, wheat, and sugar was developing. As Britain underwent steady growth, urbanization, industrialization, and economic expansion, the nation altered its food choices, shifting away from locally produced plant-based nutrition. This new diet, rich in animal proteins and refined carbohydrates, made people taller and stronger, but it led to new types of health problems. Its production also relied on far greater acreage than Britain itself, forcing the nation to become more dependent on global resources. Otter shows how this issue expands beyond Britain, looking at the global effects of large agro-food systems that require more resources than our planet can sustain. This comprehensive history helps us understand how the British played a significant role in making red meat, white bread, and sugar the diet of choice—linked to wealth, luxury, and power—and shows how dietary choices connect to the pressing issues of climate change and food supply.

Book Bullion

  • Author : John Goldsmith
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2001-09-24
  • ISBN : 0595200672
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Bullion written by John Goldsmith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-09-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was probably the greatest private hoard of gold in the world: two thousand tons of bullion lying in a vault in Zurich, which had to be sold. The Greek who owned the gold believed that he was cursed by it; the American underworld who had accepted it as security for a loan wanted their money back. Yet, its sale on the open market would cause the price of gold to plummet and precipitate a global financial crisis. Two men were separately commissioned to secretly sell the gold to private investors. Eddy Polonski, a metallurgist of genius, was being hounded by the South African gold cartel. Dan Daniels, an international attorney, was brilliant but broke. Both recognized the Greek gold was an opportunity to make millions, but did not realize that there was a ruthless force to contend with: a major international bank, which saw a chance to manipulate the market fix of the century-the Gold Rush of 1979. The price of gold doubled in under three weeks; an event as sensational as the Wall Street Crash. In a blend of fact and fiction, in which the fiction pales in comparison with the fact, Bullion tells the real story.

Book The Global Minotaur

Download or read book The Global Minotaur written by Yanis Varoufakis and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The emerging rock-star of Europe's anti-austerity uprising.' Daily Telegraph 'A spirited book.' New Yorker In this remarkable and provocative book, Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece, explodes the myth that financialisation, ineffectual regulation of banks, greed and globalisation were the root causes of both the Eurozone crisis and the global economic crisis. Rather, they are symptoms of a much deeper malaise which can be traced all the way back to the Great Crash of 1929, then on through to the 1970s: the time when a Global Minotaur was born. Today's deepening crisis in Europe is just one of the inevitable symptoms of the weakening Minotaur; of a global system which is now as unsustainable as it is imbalanced. Going beyond this, Varoufakis reveals how we might reintroduce a modicum of reason into what has become a perniciously irrational economic order. An essential account of the socio-economic events and hidden histories that have shaped the world as we now know it.

Book A World of Public Debts

Download or read book A World of Public Debts written by Nicolas Barreyre and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes public debt from a political, historical, and global perspective. It demonstrates that public debt has been a defining feature in the construction of modern states, a main driver in the history of capitalism, and a potent geopolitical force. From revolutionary crisis to empire and the rise and fall of a post-war world order, the problem of debt has never been the sole purview of closed economic circles. This book offers a key to understanding the centrality of public debt today by revealing that political problems of public debt have and will continue to need a political response. Today’s tendency to consider public debt as a source of fragility or economic inefficiency misses the fact that, since the eighteenth century, public debts and capital markets have on many occasions been used by states to enforce their sovereignty and build their institutions, especially in times of war. It is nonetheless striking to observe that certain solutions that were used in the past to smooth out public debt crises (inflation, default, cancellation, or capital controls) were left out of the political framing of the recent crisis, therefore revealing how the balance of power between bondholders, taxpayers, pensioners, and wage-earners has evolved over the past 40 years. Today, as the Covid-19 pandemic opens up a dramatic new crisis, reconnecting the history of capitalism and that of democracy seems one of the most urgent intellectual and political tasks of our time. This global political history of public debt is a contribution to this debate and will be of interest to financial, economic, and political historians and researchers.
