It's a testament to her positivity, empathy, bravery and her unfailing sense of humour' Dermot O'Leary 'A manifesto for how to be alive. It will leave you calm, hopeful and unafraid' Dawn O'Porter Kris was living a totally normal life as a twenty-three-year-old: travelling the world, falling in love, making plans. However, when she found a lump in her boob and was told that it was not only cancer, but also incurable, life took on a completely new meaning. She was diagnosed at an age when life wasn’t something to be grateful for, but a goddamn right. Little did Kris know it was cancer that would lead her to a life she had never considered: a happy one. From founding a charity to visiting Downing Street, campaigning at festivals to appearing on TV, and being present at the birth of her nephew; in the face of all the possible prognoses, Kris thrived. Glittering a Turd is more than just another cancer memoir; it’s a handbook for living life to the fullest, shining a new perspective on survival and learning to glitter your own turd, whatever it might be. Kris survived the unsurvivable for fifteen years. This is her story.

Book excerpt: A stunning star-crossed love story set against the glitz and grit of 1980s New York City When Elise Perez meets Jamey Hyde on a desolate winter afternoon, fate implodes, and neither of their lives will ever be the same. Although they are next-door neighbors in New Haven, they come from different worlds. Elise grew up in a housing project without a father and didn’t graduate from high school; Jamey is a junior at Yale, heir to a private investment bank fortune and beholden to high family expectations. Nevertheless, the attraction is instant, and what starts out as sexual obsession turns into something greater, stranger, and impossible to ignore. The couple moves to Manhattan in search of a new life, and White Fur follows them as they wander through Newport mansions and East Village dives, WASP-establishment yacht clubs and the grimy streets below Canal Street, fighting the forces determined to keep them apart. White Fur combines the electricity of Less Than Zero with the timeless intensity of Romeo and Juliet in this searing, gorgeously written novel that perfectly captures the ferocity of young love.

Book excerpt: There are three things I hate: Bratwurst in any form, my neighbors boinking like farm animals at 3 AM, and Chase Jett. Mostly I hate Chase Jett. It's been ten years since he took my virginity-I'd make a bratwurst joke, but the unfortunate truth is that it would have to be a brat-best joke, and yes, it kills me to admit that-and now he's not only a billionaire, he's also my new boss. Turns out our hate is mutual. And this kind of hate is horrifically twisted, filthy, and banging hot. I just might have to hate him forever. Mister McHottie is the hilariously sexy romantic comedy that your mother warned you about, complete with an organic happy-ever-after (or seven), a Bratwurst Wagon, ill-advised office pranks, and no cheating or cliffhangers.

Nervous new father Ray takes refuge from his responsibilities by living a virtual existence in online games. People say he needs to grow up, but everybody has to find their own way of coping. Book excerpt: Are you sick of politicians who rubbish children's efforts and arithmetic ability, but can't even get their own expenses right? You know the sort of things they moan, "3/4 of school-leavers are illiterate ... and the other 30% can't count!" Are you really happy with those who tell you that teaching and learning arithmetic is child's play? Well, if - like native Americans - you still have some reservations then Rolling It In Glitter is for you. It offers a change of perspective, bringing a touch of razzle-dazzle to this ``easy'' subject, which many nevertheless find difficult. It shows quick digital calculations (on your hands), rapid mental maths, and intriguing methods like the railway service which draws out products, without using multiplication! It also has attitude, arguing that the estimation of reasonable outcomes is essential in arithmetic - and vital in general. (Estimate: Was overthrowing Saddam/Gaddaffi more likely to produce (a) stability and global security, or (b) wealth for arms manufacturers and money-lenders?) This book is for all those facing the challenge of living & learning in the digital age: young learners, teachers (currently enjoying as much kudos as a dyspraxic flame juggler in a hay loft), concerned adults, and the just-curious. Treat it like those glossy ads which say, "Try it... because you're worth it!"

He didn’t know what the hell was in the water, but the freaking Gold seemed to breed happy endings. Like a fungus. Whatever. He was done with love. Book The Darkening Spirit

Download or read book The Darkening Spirit written by David Tacey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century could well be Jung's century, just as the twentieth century was Freud's. Jung predicted the demise of secular humanism and claimed we would search for alternatives to science, atheism and reason. We would experience a new and even unfashionable appetite for the sacred. Educated people, however, would not return to unreconstructed religions, because these do not express the life of the spirit as discerned by modern consciousness. The sacred has developed a darker hue, and worshipping symbols of light and goodness no longer satisfies the longings of the soul. The new sacred cannot be contained by the formulas of the past, but nor can we live without a sense of the sacred. We stand in a difficult place: between traditional religions we have outgrown and a pervasive materialism we can no longer embrace. These changes in our culture have come sooner than Jung might have imagined. In his time Jung struck many as eccentric or unscientific. But his works speak to our time since we have experienced the full gamut of Jungian transformations: the unsettlement of Judeo-Christian culture, the rise of the feminine, the onslaught of the dark side, the critique of modernism and positivism, and the recognition that the Western ego is neither the pinnacle of evolution nor the lord of creation. A new life is needed beyond the ego, but we do not yet know what it will look like. The outbreak of strong religion and terrorism are signs of the times, but these are expressions of a distorted and repressed spirit, and not, one hopes, genuine pointers to the future. What the future holds is uncertain, but Jung's prophetic vision helps to prepare us for what is to come, and this will be of great interest to analytical psychologists and psychoanalysts, as well as to theologians, futurists, sociologists, and the general reader.

Book excerpt: Corporate Crime and its Victims It's not gold that glitters but health stolen from past workers. Poisoned by chemicals they used, many are sick and dying. The story reaches a journalist. Inquiries lead her to a new company, Gilt Investments, a public float promising an investor bonanza. It keeps the valued parts and leaves the risk behind. The workers get nothing. The clock is ticking. Can it be stopped? The publicity for Gilt Investments claims risk free investment and a gilded future. Is it real or is it golden spin, a new public mask of glitter to hide the guilt behind. Corporate lawyer, Stephen, knows Gilt Investments will give a great return. His own bonus and share allocation promise a cash bonanza. It is all set to go. He delivers the Prospectus to the printer to send out to select clients. It goes live in a week. But as the final hours tick away a journalist rings. A desperately ill woman has contacted her, she claims the past company has poisoned her. The more the journalist looks the worse the story becomes, not one but dozens of victims. And there is a trail of deception by the former company to hide the truth of what happened three decades ago. As she digs deeper she finds other victims, paid a pittance and then hushed up. Some are dead now but many others are alive and sick. The journalist find out an imminent company restructure will separate a murky past from a glittering future. As she gets closer to the truth the company turns to sexual blackmail, used against her. It is a race on three counts, to stop the float clock so the assets don't vanish, to keep the victims alive to testify and to keep her own past buried, lest it derail it all.

Book Male Confessions

  • Author : Björn Krondorfer
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2009-12-03
  • ISBN : 0804773432

Download or read book Male Confessions written by Björn Krondorfer and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male Confessions examines how men open their intimate lives and thoughts to the public through confessional writing. This book examines writings—by St. Augustine, a Jewish ghetto policeman, an imprisoned Nazi perpetrator, and a gay American theologian—that reflect sincere attempts at introspective and retrospective self-investigation, often triggered by some wounding or rupture and followed by a transformative experience. Krondorfer takes seriously the vulnerability exposed in male self-disclosure while offering a critique of the religious and gendered rhetoric employed in such discourse. The religious imagination, he argues, allows men to talk about their intimate, flawed, and sinful selves without having to condemn themselves or to fear self-erasure. Herein lies the greatest promise of these confessions: by baring their souls to judgment, these writers may also transcend their self-imprisonment.
