Book excerpt: Despite the popular myth that plays arrive at the theater fully formed and ready for production, the truth is that for centuries, most scripts have been developed through a collaborative process in rehearsal and in concert with other theater artists. David Kahn and Donna Breed provide the first codified approach to this time-honored method of play development, with a flexible methodology that takes into account differing environments and various stages of formation. Directors can use this unique guidebook for new play development from the beginning to the end of the process. Kahn and Breed explore ways of choosing new projects, talk about where to find new scripts, and explore the legal aspects of script development. They present a detailed system for theatrical analysis of the new script and show how to continue exploration and development of the script within the laboratory of the theater. Most importantly, they delineate the parameters of the relationship between the director and the playwright, offering proven methods to help the playwright and help facilitate the healthy development of the script. Breed and Kahn offer suggestions on casting, incorporating rewrites, and script handling plus how and when to use audience response and how to decide what step to take next. They also include extended interviews with developmental directors, dramaturgs, and playwrights, who give credence to the new script development process. In short, Kahn and Breed demystify a common, though often convoluted, theater process, providing a unique codification of ways to work on new plays.

Book sed awk

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dale Dougherty
  • Publisher : "O'Reilly Media, Inc."
  • Release : 1997-03-01
  • ISBN : 1449396607
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book sed awk written by Dale Dougherty and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 1997-03-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: sed & awk describes two text processing programs that are mainstays of the UNIX programmer's toolbox.sed is a "stream editor" for editing streams of text that might be too large to edit as a single file, or that might be generated on the fly as part of a larger data processing step. The most common operation done with sed is substitution, replacing one block of text with another.awk is a complete programming language. Unlike many conventional languages, awk is "data driven" -- you specify what kind of data you are interested in and the operations to be performed when that data is found. awk does many things for you, including automatically opening and closing data files, reading records, breaking the records up into fields, and counting the records. While awk provides the features of most conventional programming languages, it also includes some unconventional features, such as extended regular expression matching and associative arrays. sed & awk describes both programs in detail and includes a chapter of example sed and awk scripts. This edition covers features of sed and awk that are mandated by the POSIX standard. This most notably affects awk, where POSIX standardized a new variable, CONVFMT, and new functions, toupper() and tolower(). The CONVFMT variable specifies the conversion format to use when converting numbers to strings (awk used to use OFMT for this purpose). The toupper() and tolower() functions each take a (presumably mixed case) string argument and return a new version of the string with all letters translated to the corresponding case.In addition, this edition covers GNU sed, newly available since the first edition. It also updates the first edition coverage of Bell Labs nawk and GNU awk (gawk), covers mawk, an additional freely available implementation of awk, and briefly discusses three commercial versions of awk, MKS awk, Thompson Automation awk (tawk), and Videosoft (VSAwk).

Book excerpt: Why write in the first place, other than your grocery list? Eric Nicol believes it’s the second-most satisfying thing you can do lying down. But it’s not enough to want to write. You must need to write. Now, after more than seventy years of scribbling – he wrote for the school newspaper at Lord Byng High School in Vancouver, British Columbia – Eric holds forth on dangling participles, punctuation, and literary jargon. What’s more, he answers the burning question: "How much should creative writers depend on editors to correct their grammar?" Then Eric provides a wide selection of essays to demonstrate how it’s done. These include a dramatic demonstration of the chutzpah of a big Tom wild turkey and its harem on a B.C. Gulf Island, the discovery that Eric’s one-way-view window in the bathroom has been installed incorrectly, the trials and tribulations of computers and the creative process, and a riposte to the query, "Are nipples really necessary on guys?" Pure Nicol. Minted in Canada. Priceless!

Book Storythinking

  • Author : Angus Fletcher
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2023-06-06
  • ISBN : 0231556721
  • Pages : 131 pages

Download or read book Storythinking written by Angus Fletcher and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every time we think ahead, we are crafting a story. Every daily plan—and every political vision, social movement, scientific hypothesis, business proposal, and technological breakthrough—starts with “what if?” Linking causes to effects, considering hypotheticals and counterfactuals, asking how other people will react: these are the essence of narrative. So why do we keep overlooking story’s importance to intelligence in favor of logic? This book explains how and why our brains think in stories. Angus Fletcher, an expert in neuroscientific approaches to narrative, identifies this capacity as “storythinking.” He demonstrates that storythinking is fundamental to what makes us human. Artificial intelligence can perform symbolic logic, rational deduction, and mathematical calculation, but it is incapable of deliberating in narrative. Drawing on new research in neuroscience and narrative theory, Fletcher explores the nature of imagination, innovation, and creativity. He provides concise answers to big questions: How does storythinking work? Why did it evolve? How can it misfire? What problems can it solve? Revealing the significance of storythinking from science to business to philosophy, this book also provides ways for readers to harness its power to script better tomorrows.

Book Glitch In The Script

  • Release : 2022-03-25
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Glitch In The Script written by Saul Tanpepper and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPISODE 13With a contract on her head, there's nowhere for Jessie to run to, nowhere to hide. But she doggedly continues with her mission to retrieve the one thing that can save her... and everyone from the scourge unleashed by her family a decade and a half earlier. This is the penultimate episode in the acclaimed cyberpunk post-apocalyptic zombie series by Saul Tanpepper. Why ZPOCALYPTO? Gameland is the post-apocalyptic dystopian world I first created in 2011 with the publication of the short story "Golgotha," which later became the prequel to this bestselling cyberpunk series. Originally just called GAMELAND, the series was released in eight "episodic" installments. Readers quickly demanded more, and a "Season Two", plus a number of standalone companion titles, were subsequently published. And still my readers wanted more. I'm happy to announce that at least two new spinoff series are now in the works. Both are set within the same terrifyingly all-too-plausible near-future world. To prepare for their upcoming release, I felt it was time to update the original series. Gaps have been filled in, loose ends tied up, and unresolved questions answered. With both seasons newly repackaged into one 14-episode collection, which now includes significantly refreshed and expanded content and gorgeous new covers, I am re-releasing the stories under new branding. The legacy series is now called ZPOCALYPTO. It and the spin-offs will hereafter be incorporated under the World of Gameland banner. "Golgotha" and all pre-existing companion titles and supplemental materials for the original series will be included within future ZPOCALYPTO episodes and boxsets, so you won't miss a single word. But if you can't wait to read the story that set this all in motion, you can find "Golgotha" in my short story collection, Shorting the Undead and Other Horrors. Now, if you're a returning Gameland fan, I thank you for your continuing support. It is my hope that with this relaunch, you don't just rediscover the thrills you experienced upon reading the original series, but that this resurrection further enriches your love and devotion to the world and its characters. At the very least, rereading it as we approach GAMELAND's tenth anniversary will hopefully prepare you for what is to come next! So grab some snacks, settle into your comfy spot, and set your phone to "do not disturb." Take my hand and hold on tight. It's time to enter The Game. Happy reading, Saul
