Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A town is more than just a collection of buildings; the buildings themselves are secondary. What truly defines a town are the people who live, work, pray, sing, love, struggle, and laugh within its confines. A town’s identity is shaped by its history, its reasons for existence, and the way these elements interact and evolve together, giving each town its unique ‘feel’ compared to another just down the road. This book offers glimpses into the life of one such town, capturing its essence and the vibrant community that defines it.

Book Texas Aggies in Vietnam

Download or read book Texas Aggies in Vietnam written by Michael Lee Lanning and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its inception, graduates of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now Texas A&M University, have marched off to fight in every conflict in which the United States has been involved. The Vietnam War was no different. The Corps of Cadets produced more officers for the conflict in Southeast Asia than any institution other than the US service academies. Michael Lee Lanning, Texas A&M University class of 1968, has now gathered over three dozen recollections from those who served. As Lanning points out, “anytime Aggie Vietnam veterans get together—whether it is two or two hundred of them—war stories begin.” The tales they relate about the paddies, the jungles, the highlands, the waterways, and the airways provide these veterans with an even greater understanding of the war they survived. They also allow glimpses into the frequent dangers of firefights, the camaraderie of patrol, and often humorous responses to inexplicable situations. These revelations provide insight not only into the realities of war but also speak to the character of the graduates of Texas A&M University. As Lanning concludes, “these war stories are as much a part of service as is that old green duffle bag, a few rows of colorful ribbons, and a pride that does not diminish. In reality, there is only one story about the Vietnam War. We all just tell it differently.”

The diary offers a rare glimpse of growing up in NYC at that time. Along with expressing her typical adolescent frustrations about school and work, the diary offers rare insights into the nature of the times. Entries include references to the 1944 election between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Thomas E. Dewey and a heated school debate on the subject, the death of FDR early in his fourth term, VE Day, the end of World War II and the celebratory neighborhood block parties that followed along with the end of NYC's curfew and the relighting of 42nd St. Mom also frequented the movies of the day and writes about them and her enjoyment of dancing, skating and hanging out with her "gang" of friends. She was also very active in her local church parish and her faith. Mom left us a gift and we are happy to share it with you.

  • Author : Dat Nguyen
  • Publisher : Swaim-Paup Sports Series, Spon
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9781623496548
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Dat written by Dat Nguyen and published by Swaim-Paup Sports Series, Spon. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a quintessentially American game, for an organization often called America's Team, Dat Nguyen stands as the first player of Vietnamese descent ever to play in the NFL. Yet if asked for his job description, he would probably answer simply, "I tackle." He tackled so well at Rockport-Fulton (Texas) High School that he earned a scholarship to Texas A&M University, becoming the first Vietnamese American football player in school history. As part of the storied "Wrecking Crew," Nguyen's tackling earned him All-American honors and led the Aggies to their first Big 12 title. And, even though he was once deemed too small to play middle linebacker in the NFL, he has earned All-Pro recognition with the Dallas Cowboys. For Dat Nguyen, though, tackling the various obstacles of life--not just running backs--gives him the most pride. He learned how to tackle life from his parents, who narrowly escaped from the North Vietnamese Army in 1975. Nguyen offers the story of his faith, his family, and his career, a true story of the American dream lived out, as an inspiration to others. He recounts his father's decision to flee Vietnam; the boat trip that took his family to freedom; and their eventual settling in Rockport, Texas, where a community of Vietnamese shrimpers established an economic livelihood using skills brought from the old country. He describes the racism his family encountered while he was growing up and how the friendship of one young Caucasian boy and his family overcame prejudice through an invitation to participate in sports. Nguyen's insightful look into the life of a big-time football player offers first-hand glimpses of the personalities and playing (or coaching) styles of many celebrated stars of college football and the NFL. His stories offer excitement, romance (as he pursues his college sweetheart, now his wife), faith, fatherhood, and humor. Dat is a lively, engaging story of growing up in a refugee family, of big-time football, and of human struggle and success.

Download or read book Aggie and Mudgy written by Wendy Proverbs and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the true story of the author’s biological mother and aunt, this middle-grade novel traces the long and frightening journey of two Kaska Dena sisters as they are taken from their home to attend residential school. When Maddy discovers an old photograph of two little girls in her grandmother’s belongings, she wants to know who they are. Nan reluctantly agrees to tell her the story, though she is unsure if Maddy is ready to hear it. The girls in the photo, Aggie and Mudgy, are two Kaska Dena sisters who lived many years ago in a remote village on the BC–Yukon border. Like countless Indigenous children, they were taken from their families at a young age to attend residential school, where they endured years of isolation and abuse. As Nan tells the story, Maddy asks many questions about Aggie and Mudgy’s 1,600-kilometre journey by riverboat, mail truck, paddlewheeler, steamship, and train, from their home to Lejac Residential School in central BC. Nan patiently explains historical facts and geographical places of the story, helping Maddy understand Aggie and Mudgy’s transitional world. Unlike many books on this subject, this story focuses on the journey toresidential school rather than the experience of attending the school itself. It offers a glimpse into the act of being physically uprooted and transported far away from loved ones. Aggie and Mudgy captures the breakdown of family by the forces of colonialism, but also celebrates the survival and perseverance of the descendants of residential school survivors to reestablish the bonds of family. Winner, 2022 City of Victoria Children's Book Prize Winner, 2022 Jeanne Clarke Regional History Award Shortlisted, 2022/23 First Nations Communities READ Award Nominated, 2022 Rocky Mountain Book Award

From the Spanish-American War and World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Aggies have been in the forefront of America’s armed forces, producing more officers than any other school outside the service academies. More than 20,000 Texas Aggies served in World War II, for instance, including more than 14,000 as commissioned officers. Trained in leadership and the knowledge required for warfare, Aggies have served with distinction in all branches of the military service. In this first-ever compilation of the impressive war record of Texas Aggies, stories of individual soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines are displayed with an abundance of statistics, maps, and tables. These narratives include • First-person accounts of Aggie heroism in battle in all the wars in which A&M former students have fought; • The horrific experiences of some of the eighty-seven Aggies who were stationed at Corregidor and Bataan; • The perils of five Aggies who participated in the raid over Tokyo with Jimmie Doolittle; • The heroics of the seven Medal of Honor recipients from Texas A&M during World War II; • James Earl Rudder’s leadership of the Ranger assault at Normandy on D-Day; • Examples of vigorous support and devotion to duty given by Aggies in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. Texas Aggies Go to War celebrates the school’s distinctive Corps of Cadets and its military contributions while honoring the individual sacrifices of its members. Those who fought and those who remember them will find here a comprehensive account of the distinguished war record of this school. This news has already caught the attention of an American millionaire, a British museum and a travelling circus owner, who each want the bones for their own collections.
