It began by my sending home a few letters to an editor who wanted to fill' up a certain amount of space. Once started, it just naturally grew into its present form. There has been no attempt at making this book a guide-book in any sense, although things of importance to a man who is going to study medicine abroad have crept into it despite the author. It does not intend to describe anything accurately (modern art doesn't allow that), but it tries to sketch the things medical in Europe that I have happened to see, as they appeared to me: comma je l'ai vu. For example, he certainly did not think that working mules on the farm was beneficial but now he can see that he learned a lot from those aggravating beasts. His education during the years of World War II left a lot to be desired but it was good enough to prepare him for the rigors of MIT degrees in physics. It is hoped that this book will help some young people in similar situations in their efforts.

The histories of their nations were broken, most of them ceased to exist and then were re-established during their lifetimes, came under foreign domination, were split up, or had their territories shifted.
