Book Micropropagation

    Book Details:
  • Author : P. Debergh
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 940092075X
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Micropropagation written by P. Debergh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropropagation is a technology that has developed within the past 30 years. Earlier overviews of plant tissue culture have reviewed micropropagation as just one of many tissue culture procedures in use. Since the applications of this technology have multiplied so rapidly in recent years, we decided that a specific overview of the technology was now appropriate Our book begins with a review of the general principles of tissue culture as applied to micropropagation. This review is concise since the general topic has been covered in numerous other books and reviews. The basic principles of laboratory design and construction are summarized in the second chapter. Common problems encountered in micropropagation, both during and after culture, are examined in detail in four chapters. As micropropagation developed from a laboratory curiosity to a commercial industry, different considerations became important. These are discussed in two chapters. An attempt has been made to assess the current status of commercial production around the world. This has been difficult because commercial production figures are often closely guarded and little has been done to collect statistics on this growing industry. Applications to a broad range of crops are discussed in a series of chapters. These try to report the state of the art in each area, but since applications for some crops are much more advanced than for others, the focus of these chapters varies depending upon the progress that has been made.

Book Plant Tissue Culture Theory and Practice

Download or read book Plant Tissue Culture Theory and Practice written by S.S. Bhojwani and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition in 1983, several new and exciting developments have taken place in the field of plant tissue culture, which forms a major component of what is now called plant biotechnology. The revised edition presents updated information on theoretical, practical and applied aspects of plant tissue culture. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and, as before, is written in lucid language, includes relevant media protocols, and is profusely illustrated with self-explanatory diagrams and original photographs. This book includes three new chapters: "Variant selection", "Genetic Engineering" and "Production of Industrial Compounds" and contains a complete bibliography and a glossary of terms commonly used in tissue culture literature. This updated version proves to be an excellent text for undergraduate, postgraduate students and teachers in various fields of plant sciences and a useful reference book for those interested in the application of any aspect of this aseptic technology.

Book excerpt: Approximately 99.9% of vertebrate species reproduce sexually. The exceptional 0.1% reproduce via asexual or clonal means, which vary wildly and are fascinating in their own right. In this book, John C. Avise describes the genetics, ecology, natural history, and evolution of the world's approximately 100 species of vertebrate animal that routinely display one form or another of clonal or quasi-clonal reproduction. By considering the many facets of sexual abstinence and clonal reproduction in vertebrate animals, Avise sheds new light on the biological meaning and ramifications of standard sexuality.

Book Sensory Biology of Plants

Download or read book Sensory Biology of Plants written by Sudhir Sopory and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-09 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants provide a source of survival for all life on this planet. They are able to capture solar energy and convert it into food, feed, wood and medicines. Though sessile in nature, over many millions of years, plants have diversified and evolved from lower to higher life forms, spreading from sea level to mountains, and adapting to different ecozones. They have learnt to cope with challenging environmental conditions and various abiotic and biotic factors. Plants have also developed systems for monitoring the changing environment and efficiently utilizing resources for growth, flowering and reproduction, as well as mechanisms to counter the impact of pests and diseases and to communicate with other biological systems, like microbes and insects. This book discusses the “awareness” of plants and their ability to gather information through the perception of environmental cues, such as light, gravity, water, nutrients, touch and sound, and stresses. It also explores plants’ biochemical and molecular “computing” of the information to adjust their physiology and development to the advantage of the species. Further, it examines how plants communicate between their different organs and with other organisms, as well as the concepts of plant cognition, experience and memory, from both scientific and philosophical perspectives. Lastly, it addresses the phenomenon of death in plants. The epilogue presents an artist’s view of the beauty of the natural world, especially plant “architecture”. The book provides historical perspectives, comparisons with animal systems where needed, and general biochemical and molecular concepts and themes. Each chapter is selfcontained, but also includes cross talk with other chapters to offer an integrated view of plant life and allow readers to appreciate and admire the functioning of plant life from within and without. The book is a tribute by the Editor to his students, colleagues and co-workers and to those in whose labs he has worked.

Book The Life of a Leaf

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Vogel
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2012-10-17
  • ISBN : 0226859398
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book The Life of a Leaf written by Steven Vogel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its essence, science is a way of looking at and thinking about the world. In The Life of a Leaf, Steven Vogel illuminates this approach, using the humble leaf as a model. Whether plant or person, every organism must contend with its immediate physical environment, a world that both limits what organisms can do and offers innumerable opportunities for evolving fascinating ways of challenging those limits. Here, Vogel explains these interactions, examining through the example of the leaf the extraordinary designs that enable life to adapt to its physical world. In Vogel’s account, the leaf serves as a biological everyman, an ordinary and ubiquitous living thing that nonetheless speaks volumes about our environment as well as its own. Thus in exploring the leaf’s world, Vogel simultaneously explores our own.
