Book excerpt: Sight is the major gateway to lining. Worldwide, glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent loss of sight. But if people with glaucoma care for themselves well, they rarely become blind from glaucoma. This book aims to empower individuals by discussing important aspects of glaucoma in an accessible manner, with clear illustrations and helpful analogies. It focuses on ways the individual can take responsibility for his or her own health and live well, through being informed and practicing good self-care. While glaucoma stands at the center of this book, the concepts also apply to other diseases and life in general. Much of the available advice on health is so generic, so self-serving, and so incorrect it is not helpful to the individual seeking sound advice. This book was written to be useful to all those wanting to learn about glaucoma, see well, and be well. Dr. Spaeth has been caring for people with glaucoma for over 50 years and was voted the most influential eye doctor in the world by other eye doctors. Dr. Ichhpujani adds to the book the point of view of a busy, widely respected eye doctor practicing in India.

  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-08-23
  • ISBN : 9784431562009
  • Pages : 113 pages

Download or read book Myopia and Glaucoma written by Kazuhisa Sugiyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as an introductory reference on clinical aspects of glaucoma and myopia, providing essential guidelines for diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma progression in patients, especially those with high myopias. Many clinical studies are presented by leading experts in the field in an accessible style, making the content suitable not only for ophthalmologists but also for optometrists and certified orthoptists as well as for students. The relation between myopia and glaucoma has been the subject of many clinical trials and population-based studies. Most of the data has suggested that moderate to high myopia is associated with increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, and ocular hypertension. There are several factors involved in the diagnosis of glaucoma, but it is often difficult to determine the presence of glaucoma in myopic eyes. A myopic eye, especially in cases of moderate to high myopia, tends to have a thin retina and choroid and to appear thinner than normal. Even with new imaging technologies with improved sensitivity and specificity for detecting glaucoma, each technology presents some challenges when assessing myopic eyes. This book furnishes an overview of these diagnostic challenges with reference to the growing prevalence and severity of myopia in various parts of the world, providing many valuable hands-on reports and clinical studies by authoritative authors. This knowledge will help to do away with the vague area between high myopia and glaucoma faced by clinicians.

Book excerpt: Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye disease that has the potential to damage your optic nerve. The optic nerve supplies visual information to your brain from your eyes. Glaucoma is usually, but not always, the result of abnormally high pressure inside your eye. Over time, the increased pressure can erode your optic nerve tissue, which may lead to vision loss or even blindness. If it's caught early, you may be able to prevent additional vision loss. What Causes Glaucoma? The back side of your eye continuously makes a clear fluid known as aqueous humor. As this fluid is made, it fills the front part of your eye. Then, it vacates your eye through channels in your cornea and iris. If these channels are blocked or partially obstructed, the natural pressure in your eye, which is called the intraocular pressure (IOP), may increase. As your IOP increases, your optic nerve may become damaged. As damage to your nerve progresses, you may begin losing sight in your eye. What causes the pressure in your eye to increase isn't always known. However, doctors believe one or more of these factors may play a role: dilating eye drops blocked or restricted drainage in your eye medications, such as corticosteroids poor or reduced blood flow to your optic nerve high or elevated blood pressure The stages of glaucoma, types of glaucoma, glaucoma in children and the effective means of preventing and treating glaucoma.
