Book excerpt: Give Abundantly focuses on giving and sharing with others. Everything we do in life either enhances or compromises our health—whether it is your physical health, your emotional health, or your spiritual health. Our actions are either welcoming to people or they are not. The book focuses on: • Actions that enhance our friendships and our health • The do's and don'ts that impact the quality of our friends • Ideas that help us move away from being selfish and ideas to help us be more giving • Increasing our sensitivity to the second greatest commandment outlined in the Bible—""You shall love your neighbor as yourself."" • Suggestions are provided for ways to demonstrate generosity and love toward others My hope is that some of the suggestions may be used by the reader to stimulate actions that show the love that they have for other people. People understand that we love and care about them by the things that we do. At the heart of the issue is the Golden Rule. If you were in a situation that seemed hopeless, you would want someone to respond to your needs and trials. Jesus was the ultimate role model for selflessness; however, you might be the one He uses to provide for the needs of others.

Book excerpt: In the beginning of the fifth book of the New Testament, The Acts of the Apostles, the followers of Jesus experience living abundantly (John 10:10). The risen Christ brings a momentous opportunity to His followers. He gives them a promise (the power of the Holy Spirit) and a challenge (to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth). The rest of The Acts of the Apostles describes how Peter, John, Paul and others became witnesses to Christ to the ends of the earth. They accepted the promise and obeyed the challenge to discover the meaning of living abundantly with the Lord Jesus. The Letters of Paul and the other letters of the New Testament continue to explore how the promise and challenge of the risen Christ bring abundant life to us today. The Revelation to John completes the promise of our Savior. Living Abundantly is a collection of short meditations that cover the entire text of the second half of the New Testament.

Book excerpt: The world we know has been irrevocably shaped by certain major movements of massive significance: among them, the Enlightenment and Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and the American Revolution?to say nothing of lengthened life, heightened education, and awareness of women's rights. Largely untouched by the fundamental attitude of much of these changes is the Roman Catholic Church. It is probably the only major global institution where the emphasis on a central monarchy has been steadily growing?the Roman papacy and Episcopal hierarchy. Change will inevitably come to the Church and that change will include the Roman Catholic Church. What is proposed in this book is a flexible shape that opens the way to such change, implemented immediately at grass roots. To express it simply, gatherings of the grass roots folk for clergy-free small-group Eucharist's and more rarely for small group clergy-free celebrations of reconciliation; the equivalent of current priests would focus above all on leadership in faith communities. Very basically, reality needs to be given to the priesthood of the faithful and emphasis given to the importance of leadership in faith communities. The shape that this reality and this emphasis will be given will vary enormously in each culture and society. The need for some basic underlying direction is not difficult to discern.

Download or read book The Shepherd of Hermas written by and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of five visions granted to Hermas, a former slave. This is followed by twelve mandates or commandments, and ten similitudes, or parables. It commences abruptly in the first person: "He who brought me up sold me to a certain Rhoda, who was at Rome. After many years I met her again, and began to love her as a sister." As Hermas was on the road to Cumae, he had a vision of Rhoda. She told him that she was his accuser in heaven, on account of an unchaste thought the (married) narrator had once had concerning her, though only in passing. He was to pray for forgiveness for himself and all his house. He is consoled by a vision of the Church in the form of an aged woman, weak and helpless from the sins of the faithful, who tells him to do penance and to correct the sins of his children. Subsequently he sees her made younger through penance, yet wrinkled and with white hair; then again, as quite young but still with white hair; and lastly, she shows herself as glorious as a Bride.

Book A Study in Karma

Book excerpt: AMONG the many illuminating gifts to the western world, conveyed to it by the medium of the Theosophical Society, that of the knowledge of karma comes, perhaps, next in importance to that of reincarnation. It removes human thought and desire from the region of arbitrary happenings to the realm of law, and thus places man's future under his own control in proportion to the amount of his knowledge
