Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, labor leaders in women's unions routinely chastised their members for their ceaseless pursuit of fashion, avid reading of dime novels, and "affected" ways, including aristocratic airs and accents. Indeed, working women in America were eagerly participating in the burgeoning consumer culture available to them. While the leading activists, organizers, and radicals feared that consumerist tendencies made working women seem frivolous and dissuaded them from political action, these women, in fact, went on strike in very large numbers during the period, proving themselves to be politically active, astute, and effective. In Ladies of Labor, Girls of Adventure, historian Nan Enstad explores the complex relationship between consumer culture and political activism for late nineteenth- and twentieth-century working women. While consumerism did not make women into radicals, it helped shape their culture and their identities as both workers and political actors. Examining material ranging from early dime novels about ordinary women who inherit wealth or marry millionaires, to inexpensive, ready-to-wear clothing that allowed them to both deny and resist mistreatment in the workplace, Enstad analyzes how working women wove popular narratives and fashions into their developing sense of themselves as "ladies." She then provides a detailed examination of how this notion of "ladyhood" affected the great New York shirtwaist strike of 1909-1910. From the women's grievances, to the walkout of over 20,000 workers, to their style of picketing, Enstad shows how consumer culture was a central theme in this key event of labor strife. Finally, Enstad turns to the motion picture genre of female adventure serials, popular after 1912, which imbued "ladyhood" with heroines' strength, independence, and daring.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation I examine a summer maker program that provides high-school aged girls with a space and a community to pursue their maker interests and develop their identities as girls and makers. The program took place in a girls-only space for design and making that uses a distinctive approach focused on giving girls the opportunity to design and build large objects using a combination of power tools and digital fabrication, by using practices, tools, and materials that are traditionally seen as “masculine” and “belonging to men”. I present the analysis and findings in three chapters, each composed as a stand-alone paper. In the first study I draw on entrance interviews as the main data source to learn how girls from underrepresented communities imagined their participation, what aspects of the program piqued their interest, and how their everyday experiences in their home communities affected their aspirations for their participation in the program. Findings indicate that girls saw their participation in the program as an opportunity to experiment with possible desired identities in a way that is not available to them in their daily lives, where they experience STEM-based spaces as ones that “don’t see girls.” I describe several themes that emerged from girls’ stories as they engaged in making meaning in light of their decision to participate. Girls saw the program as a place to examine their identity as girls, makers and young adults. They felt that, to engage in creating new stories for themselves, they needed the space to be with like-minded girls and needed this space to be separated from their home and school communities. They looked for a space in which they could experiment with alternative ways of being and doing. In the second study I investigate the resources that were available to girls, either through the program or from other figured worlds, in their construction of identity in the intersection of gender and practice. The findings of this study demonstrate four paths of identity resources through which girls engaged in playful explorations of alternative identities: (a) entering spaces as legitimate members of a community of practice, (b) produced objects and artifacts as carriers of self-understanding between figured worlds, (c) gender presentation practices in refiguring the self, and (d) building relationships of emotional support and care. The third paper contributes to the line of research that focuses on collaboration in maker projects with the goal to broaden our perspective on the mechanisms that allow girls to reach shared understanding while driving their design forward. In this study I transition from the overall look on girls’ experiences, to an examination of the moment-by-moment interactional level. In the analysis I focus on one group of girls in their effort to co-organize and coordinate their interactions and their working space as they collaborated to design a wooden structure for a client in the community. I look at the roles of bodies, materials and discourse as resources in the coordination of their design and building processes as they drove their work forward while maintaining the individuality of each of the members engaged in the process. I demonstrate that each girl used the resources in a way that allowed her to alternate between a space of mutual attention to a space in which each could figure out the problems for herself and have the opportunity to position herself as a unique contributor. I show that each girl was able to approach the project as a member of a specific community of discourse. The co-construction of new solutions was possible when participants were able to communicate across disciplinary discourses.These three studies together provide a more nuanced description of girls who are interested in girls-only maker experiences, their motivations and the types of opportunities that allow them to materialize their imagination of figuring themselves in this setting.

Feminine representation, Talairach-Vielmas argues, is actually presented in a hyper-realistic way in such anti-realistic genres as children's literature and sensation fiction. In fact, it is precisely the clash between fantasy and reality that enables the narratives to interrogate the real and re-create a new type of realism that exposes the normative constraints imposed to contain the female body. In her exploration of the female body and its representations, Talairach-Vielmas examines how Victorian fantasies and sensation novels deconstruct and reconstruct femininity; she focuses in particular on the links between the female characters and consumerism, and shows how these serve to illuminate the tensions underlying the representation of the Victorian ideal.
