Sharon is new to the Charleston, West Virginia, area after moving from Cedar Bluff, North Carolina. She is still making new friends when she happens to see the Jimmy Lane Band in concert at their high school. Jimmy notices her as well in the crowded lunchroom. It takes weeks, however, for them to actually meet in person due to previous obligations, pride, and bad timing. First they become friends, then soon begin dating. Everything is fine for a while, but Sharon has to deal with the emptiness of missing home, and Jimmy oftentimes puts the band before his girlfriend. Once they realize their true love for each other and mature to the point of a stable relationship, it is already too late for resolution. Immaturity and inexperience cause chaos, which leads to bad habits, missed opportunities, poor decisions, and recklessness--only complicating their already-dire situation.

The murder weapon was traced to Nick Martin, a veteran of Iwo Jima. Nick had spent fifteen pain-ridden years in and out of Army hospitals. He tried to drown his memories of the horror, but whisky only put him right back in the middle of that fierce battle. Nick drank a fifth the night of the killing. That’s the kind of case the police call 'open and shut.' But Ed Rivers, a private detective, was a friend of Nick Martin’s. And no one was shutting the door of a death cell on Nick - not while Rivers could still go after the real, fiendishly clever murderer.

Download or read book Amazing Racers written by Marc Bloom and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would one call taking teens with no evident running talent and putting them through breakneck training combined with mantras from the rock n' roll, techniques from Kenya, philosophy from Australia and turning them champions? Is it revolutionary? Or just plain crazy?Bill Aris has heard both, but one thing is indisputable. Everything Aris does with his runners—male and female—is new and extraordinary, and he has created a new American running dynasty. The runners of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, or F-M, have won the last nine out of ten national championships and have the best cumulative record in cross country history. F-M's domination has shocked the sport for its defiance of accepted running principles and limitations. One year, the girls defeated the 2nd-place team in the country by an average of 59 seconds per girl in a 5k race. Another year, the F-M girls’ ran faster than their Kenyan counterparts, who had come to Oregon as a showcase. Across the country, top coaches all whisper, “How do they do it?”From adopting long-forgotten Spartan creeds to focusing on teenaged developmental psychology and gender-blindness in training, The Running Revolutionaries is a a must read for millions of runners and the millions more who strive for better performance.

Download or read book Perfectly Prep written by Sarah A. Chase and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-20 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although New England boarding schools have been educating America's elite for four generations, they, along with their privileged students, rarely have been the subject of study. Living in a senior boys' dorm at a co-ed school, Sarah Chase was able to witness the inner workings of student culture and the dynamics of their peer groups. In an environment of ivy-covered buildings, institutional goals of excellence and aspirations to Ivy League colleges, the boys and girls acted extremely masculine or feminine. While girls typically worked themselves into a state of sleep deprivation and despair during exam period, the boys remained seemingly unconcerned and relaxed. As much as the girls felt pressure to be "cute" and "perfect," the boys felt pressure to be "bad ass" and the "best at everything." Tellingly, the boys thought that "it would suck" to be a girl, while over one third of the girls wanted to be male if given the chance. From her vantage point of sitting in the back of the football and field hockey buses, attending prom and senior pranks, and listening to how students described their academic and social pressures, competition, rumors, backstabbing, sex, and partying, Chase discovered that these boys and girls shared similar values, needs and desires despite their highly gendered behavior. The large class, ethnic and individual differences in how the students perform their genders reveal the importance of culture in development and the power of individual agency. This book examines the price of privilege and uncovers how student culture reflects and perpetuates society and institutional power structures and gender ideologies.
