Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Michael finds an old spell book at a used bookstore in a mall, he doesn’t think the spells will actually work—until he tries one as a joke. He has to try the spell a second time, to make sure the effect wasn’t just a huge coincidence, and sure enough: it works again. Now, Michael is feeling overwhelmed by the power he’s holding in his hands. There are lots of spells he wants to try out, but near the end of the book is one that particularly catches his eye: a spell that gives the caster a long, vivid dream of whatever he or she desires. All Michael has to do is drink a special mixture and imagine the dream world he wants to spend a few hours in. But just before he dozes off, he remembers seeing a pretty young woman in a cute little skirt at the mall, and that image becomes the basis for his new fantasy world.

Book Gender Swapped Fairy Tales

Download or read book Gender Swapped Fairy Tales written by Karrie Fransman and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover a collection of fairy tales unlike the ones you've read before . . . Once upon a time, in the middle of winter, a King sat at a window and sewed. As he sewed and gazed out onto the landscape, he pricked his finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow outside. People have been telling fairy tales to their children for hundreds of years. And for almost as long, people have been rewriting those fairy tales - to help their children imagine a world where they are the heroes. Karrie and Jon were reading their child these stories when they hit upon a dilemma, something previous versions of these stories were missing, and so they decided to make one vital change.. They haven't rewritten the stories in this book. They haven't reimagined endings, or reinvented characters. What they have done is switch all the genders. It might not sound like that much of a change, but you'll be dazzled by the world this swap creates - and amazed by the new characters you're about to discover.

Book A Natural History of Transition

Download or read book A Natural History of Transition written by Callum Angus and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Short Stories. LGBTQIA Studies. A NATURAL HISTORY OF TRANSITION is a collection of short stories that disrupts the notion that trans people can only have one transformation. Like the landscape studied over eons, change does not have an expiration date for these trans characters, who grow as tall as buildings, turn into mountains, unravel hometown mysteries, and give birth to cocoons. Portland-based author Callum Angus infuses his work with a mix of alternative history, horror, and a reality heavily dosed with magic. Callum Angus is one of the younger writers I'm most excited by, with a mind full of marvels and an ear to match. Every story surprises; every sentence strives gorgeously toward music. This is writing as transition, as entrancement, as transcendence.--Garth Greenwell

Book Changing Sex and Bending Gender

Download or read book Changing Sex and Bending Gender written by Alison Shaw and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologists and historians have shown us that 'male' and 'female' are variously defined historically and cross-culturally. The contributions to this volume focus on the voluntary and involuntary, temporary or permanent transformation of gender identity. Overall, this volume provides powerful and compelling illustrations of how, across a wide range of cultures, processes of gender transformation are shaped within, and ultimately constrained by, social and political context. From medical responses to biological ambiguity, legal responses to cases brought by transsexuals, the historical role of the eunuch in Byzantium, the social transformation of gender in Northern Albania and in the Southern Philippines, to North American 'drag' shows, English pantomime and Japanese kabuki theatre, this volume offers revealing insights into the ambiguities and limitations of gender transformation.

Book Androgyny in Late Ming and Early Qing Literature

Download or read book Androgyny in Late Ming and Early Qing Literature written by Zuyan Zhou and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent appearance of androgyny in Ming and Qing literature has long interested scholars of late imperial Chinese culture. A flourishing economy, widespread education, rising individualism, a prevailing hedonism--all of these had contributed to the gradual disintegration of traditional gender roles in late Ming and early Qing China (1550-1750) and given rise to the phenomenon of androgyny. Now, Zuyan Zhou sheds new light on this important period, offering a highly original and astute look at the concept of androgyny in key works of Chinese fiction and drama from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The work begins with an exploration of androgyny in Chinese philosophy and Ming-Qing culture. Zhou proceeds to examine chronologically the appearance of androgyny in major literary writing of the time, yielding novel interpretations of canonical works from The Plum in the Golden Vase, through the scholar-beauty romances, to The Dream of the Red Chamber. He traces the ascendance of the androgyny craze in the late Ming, its culmination in the Ming-Qing transition, and its gradual phasing out after the mid-Qing. The study probes deviations from engendered codes of behavior both in culture and literature, then focuses on two parallel areas: androgyny in literary characterization and androgyny in literati identity. The author concludes that androgyny in late Ming and early Qing literature is essentially the dissident literati's stance against tyrannical politics, a psychological strategy to relieve anxiety over growing political inferiority.
