Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1975-02-01 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five-year period from 1841 to 1846 saw the beginning of Jefferson Davis’ political career. In this, the second volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the documents cover Davis’ unsuccessful race for the state legislature, his selection as a Democratic state elector, his marriage to Varina Howell, his election to the U.S. House of Representatives, and his departure therefrom to assume command of the First Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican War. In the congressional documents Davis emerges as a hardworking freshman representative who quickly won for himself the respect and esteem of his fellow congressmen. There were, however, notable exceptions. One such exception was Andrew Johnson, a tailor by trade, who strongly resented Davis’ remark on the floor of the House that a “blacksmith or tailor” could not be expected to achieve the same results in battle as a trained military man. In the somewhat bitter exchange that followed, some have professed to see the beginnings of the long-standing animosity between Johnson and Davis. The 255 documents in this volume (two appendixes contain undated and late-arriving items) provide a clear picture of Jefferson Davis, the man and the politician, and give an intimate view of Mississippi in the 1840s. Throughout the volume are rumblings of the then distant storm that was to break so disastrously over the nation in the 1860s.

This book was released on 1877 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jacob Leisler ... from Frankfort, came to New Netherland a soldier in the West India Company's service in 1660. He embarked in the ship Otter from Amsterdam, the 27th of April of that year. There was a tradition among his descendants that he came originally from France, and a vague report, a hundred years or so ago in New York, that he was Swiss. It is more likely that he was born in Frankfort, and was, therefore a native of Germany."--Page 7. On 11 April 1663 Jacob married Elsje Tymens, widow of Pieter (Cornelisen) Vander Veen and daughter of Tymens (Thymens) and Marritje Janszen. She was born in New Amsterdam. Jacob Leisler and his son-in-law Jacob Milborne " ... were convicted and attainted of high treason ... and sentenced to death. They were executed together [in what is now present day New York City] near the site of the present Hall of Records, on Saturday, May 16, 1691 ..."--Page 8. "Elsje Tymens, the widow of Jacob Leisler, survived him some 13 or 14 years. She was living Sept. 17, 1704, at which date she was a sponsor at the baptism of Elizabeth, dau. of Barent Reinders."--Page 10.
Download or read book The Munro Family from Longlac written by Kenneth Munro and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Munro family of Longlac. George, Jane and I spent our salad days in this picturesque little Northwestern Ontario community based on the pulp industry nestled between two First Nations' reserves. It is the story of a largely agricultural family whose members had deep roots in the soil of Saskatchewan and Ontario and whose offspring struggled throughout the twentieth century to become well-educated middle class urban family members. Although my grandparents and parents brought family characteristics to bear on the development of me and my siblings, this little community provided an environment in our early years which left an indelible influence on all three of our lives. Longlac was a mirror of the larger Canadian environment which sometimes exhibited prejudice and stifled creativity, but it also exhibited tolerance and allowed freedom for personal growth. Education was the passport to employment in urban Canada and to a full participation in Canadian life. Our parents saw that my siblings and I knew of our origins in both western and eastern Canada and gave us every opportunity to become familiar with both the English and French languages and cultures. Our eye on the world was the CBC whose low power relay transmitter broadcast English-language programs during the day. This environment was our springboard to success in our various professions and provided the following generations with an ability to contribute to Canada as hard-working, caring members of a middle-class family....
