Book Architecture Space and Memory of Resurrection in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Architecture Space and Memory of Resurrection in Northern Ireland written by Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Ireland has a complex urbanism with multilayered socio-spatial politics. In this environment, issues of communication, self-representation and expression of identity are central to the experience of urban space and architecture where the dichotomy of division and shared living are spatially exercised in everyday life. Unlike other studies in the area, this book focuses on the everyday experiences of local communities in both public and private spheres - issues of ‘shareness’ - challenging conventional approaches to divided cities. The book aims to layer its narratives of architectural and social developments as an urban experience in post-conflict settings over the past two decades.

Book excerpt: In a village in Northern Ireland, a war is waged, not a battle of blood and bullets, but a gambit for the souls of the simple, a campaign to reclaim lost ideals. Within small homes, through narrow paths framed by hedgerows, the common people fight for something more than what they have, they search for, in the face of easy answers, something better than what life has offered them. Because in the face of the darkness within us, staring in the eye of what others want us to accept, and standing toe to toe with the easy weaknesses of humanity, we are forced to leap into the unknown. When who we are is threatened, the good in us must take a stand, or be eradicated, leaving behind only the husks of the soulless.

Download or read book Flax Americana written by Joshua MacFadyen and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farmers feed cities, but starting in the nineteenth century they painted them too. Flax from Canada and the northern United States produced fibre for textiles and linseed oil for paint – critical commodities in a century when wars were fought over fibre and when increased urbanization demanded expanded paint markets. Flax Americana re-examines the changing relationships between farmers, urban consumers, and the land through a narrative of Canada’s first and most important industrial crop. Initially a specialty crop grown by Mennonites and other communities on contracts for small-town mill complexes, flax became big business in the late nineteenth century as multinational linseed oil companies quickly displaced rural mills. Flax cultivation spread across the northern plains and prairies, particularly along the edges of dryland settlement, and then into similar ecosystems in South America’s Pampas. Joshua MacFadyen’s detailed examination of archival records reveals the complexity of a global commodity and its impact on the eastern Great Lakes and northern Great Plains. He demonstrates how international networks of scientists, businesses, and regulators attempted to predict and control the crop’s frontier geography, how evolving consumer concerns about product quality and safety shaped the market and its regulations, and how the nature of each region encouraged some forms of business and limited others. The northern flax industry emerged because of border-crossing communities. By following the plant across countries and over time Flax Americana sheds new light on the ways that commodities, frontiers, and industrial capitalism shaped the modern world.

Book Masters of the Humdrum Mystery

Download or read book Masters of the Humdrum Mystery written by Curtis Evans and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972, in an attempt to elevate the stature of the "crime novel," influential crime writer and critic Julian Symons cast numerous Golden Age detective fiction writers into literary perdition as "Humdrums," condemning their focus on puzzle plots over stylish writing and explorations of character, setting and theme. This volume explores the works of three prominent British "Humdrums"--Cecil John Charles Street, Freeman Wills Crofts, and Alfred Walter Stewart--revealing their work to be more complex, as puzzles and as social documents, than Symons allowed. By championing the intrinsic merit of these mystery writers, the study demonstrates that reintegrating the "Humdrums" into mystery genre studies provides a fuller understanding of the Golden Age of detective fiction and its aftermath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' But we will do what we have always done – just get on with it .' The contributions of Northern Ireland to allied efforts in the Second World War are widely celebrated, acknowledged by both Sir Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt as vital to their eventual victory. Lesser known are the personal and individual lives of the people who made those contributions – the human cost and the everyday lives that would be changed forever. In We Just Got On With It, Doreen McBride gathers stories and interviews conducted and written by local historians and historical societies. From essential agricultural work to the sunken German submarine fleet that surrendered on the banks of Lough Foyle, and from childhood smuggling adventures to the devasting destruction of bombing raids, these are tales of humour and tragedy from those who have stories to tell.
