Book Doctors

Download or read book Doctors written by Sherwin B. Nuland and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of How We Die, the extraordinary story of the development of modern medicine, told through the lives of the physician-scientists who paved the way. How does medical science advance? Popular historians would have us believe that a few heroic individuals, possessing superhuman talents, lead an unselfish quest to better the human condition. But as renowned Yale surgeon and medical historian Sherwin B. Nuland shows in this brilliant collection of linked life portraits, the theory bears little resemblance to the truth. Through the centuries, the men and women who have shaped the world of medicine have been not only very human, but also very much the products of their own times and places. Presenting compelling studies of great medical innovators and pioneers, Doctors gives us a fascinating history of modern medicine. Ranging from the legendary Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, to Andreas Vesalius, whose Renaissance masterwork on anatomy offered invaluable new insight into the human body, to Helen Taussig, founder of pediatric cardiology and co-inventor of the original "blue baby" operation, here is a volume filled with the spirit of ideas and the thrill of discovery.

Book My Brother in Arms The Exceptional Life of Mark Andrew Forester United States Air Force Combat Controller

Download or read book My Brother in Arms The Exceptional Life of Mark Andrew Forester United States Air Force Combat Controller written by Thad Forester and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 29, 2010 my brother, Mark Forester, was KIA while fighting terrorists in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. His heroic legacy of being shot down while preparing to rescue a fallen teammate began long before this tragic day. An Apache aviator said of Mark's final battle: ...I have never witnessed such an act of heroism in my three years of fighting in combat. I have over 2,700 hours total time with 1,500 hours of combat time in both Iraq and Afghanistan...JAG 28 continued to advance on the enemy while taking intense enemy fire, and continuously fired his weapon in an attempt to get to his fallen teammate and destroy the enemy. Mark chose to enlist in the Air Force as a Special Operations Combat Controller after he received his Bachelor's degree from The University of Alabama. Because of his above average grades and near-photographic memory, his Business Finance degree would have done him well. But, he felt a higher calling; one that put him between us and the enemies bent on our destruction. Mark is the youngest of five children. He is my younger brother and I write from that viewpoint. We were the youngest in the family and he was my best friend. There are few things in life that I can speak of with total confidence and conviction-my little brother is one of them. Mark's military career was only a small part of his life, so this book doesn't highlight just the last three years of his 29 years on earth, but I've tried to capture his entire life. From his family environment, to his spiritual beliefs, to his trials, and then to his physical talents; these all prepared him to face his most vicious battles in one of the most violent areas of the world. Since his death, our eyes and hearts have been opened to multiple examples of selflessness and patriotism by meeting his teammates and leaders in the military. We have witnessed first-hand their ability to turn off their stern, professional personae and turn on compassion, love, support and acceptance. I feel a strong desire to Honor our Heroes. This book highlights one hero, SrA Mark A. Forester, and also helps recognize many other men and women who volunteer to fight for our freedom. My Brother in Arms is not a memorial in print, but a biography for continuing Mark's legacy of perseverance, determination and accomplishing our missions on earth. We each have different missions, but what's important is for each of us to recognize ours and work to accomplish it. In the end, don't we all want to go out while moving forward?

This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2, Bringing Order to Chaos: Combined Arms Maneuver in Large Scale Combat Operations, opens a dialogue with the Army. Are we ready for the significantly increased casualties inherent to intensive combat between large formations, the constant paralyzing stress of continual contact with a peer enemy, and the difficult nature of command and control while attempting division and corps combined arms maneuver to destroy that enemy? The chapters in this volume answer these questions for combat operations while spanning military history from 1917 through 2003. These accounts tell the challenges of intense combat, the drain of heavy casualties, the difficulty of commanding and controlling huge formations in contact, the effective use of direct and indirect fires, the need for high quality leadership, thoughtful application of sound doctrine, and logistical sustainment up to the task. No large scale combat engagement, battle, or campaign of the last one hundred years has been successful without being better than the enemy in these critical capabilities. What can we learn from the past to help us make the transition to ready to fight tonight?
