Book Beyond the Gibson Girl

Download or read book Beyond the Gibson Girl written by Martha H. Patterson and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging monolithic images of the New Woman as white, well-educated, and politically progressive, this study focuses on important regional, ethnic, and sociopolitical differences in the use of the New Woman trope at the turn of the twentieth century. Using Charles Dana Gibson's "Gibson Girls" as a point of departure, Martha H. Patterson explores how writers such as Pauline Hopkins, Margaret Murray Washington, Sui Sin Far, Mary Johnston, Edith Wharton, Ellen Glasgow, and Willa Cather challenged and redeployed the New Woman image in light of other “new” conceptions: the "New Negro Woman," the "New Ethics," the "New South," and the "New China." As she appears in these writers' works, the New Woman both promises and threatens to effect sociopolitical change as a consumer, an instigator of evolutionary and economic development, and (for writers of color) an icon of successful assimilation into dominant Anglo-American culture. Examining a diverse array of cultural products, Patterson shows how the seemingly celebratory term of the New Woman becomes a trope not only of progressive reform, consumer power, transgressive femininity, modern energy, and modern cure, but also of racial and ethnic taxonomies, social Darwinist struggle, imperialist ambition, assimilationist pressures, and modern decay.

Book excerpt: According to company lore, Gibson, the guitar manufacturer, had ceased guitar production during World War II with only "seasoned craftsmen" too old for battle doing repairs and completing the few instruments already in progress at their Kalamazoo, Michigan factory. However, beginning in 1942, Gibson started producing wartime guitars each marked with a small, golden "banner" displaying the slogan: "only a Gibson is good enough." Over 9000 of these "Banner" guitars were produced between 1942 and 1945 and they are considered to be some of the finest acoustic guitars ever produced but who was making them? In this work of musical and social history, Thomas explores the origins of the Gibson "Banner" guitars and the remarkable women, many of whom had no prior training in instrument construction, who built them.

Book Jason Goldtrap Presents the Girl

Download or read book Jason Goldtrap Presents the Girl written by Jason Goldtrap and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jason Goldtrap Presents: The Girl" is a unique book. Set in the near, optimistic future, there are no evil corporations, aliens, zombies, just human driven stories about an eighteen-year-old girl Freshman year at a university. The characters and the locations have no name. This work is inspired by the art of Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944). His one panel cartoons focused on a young ingnue and her adventures in love and life. Like Gibson, I used a sparse description for each entry: it is up to you the read to fill in the unspoken dialogue. Gibson drew masterfully, I however have not been blessed with that talent so it is up to the reader to complete the drawing in their mind. The characters, though they live in a future replete with modern technology they dress as Edwardians; a more modest, classy, dapper and elegant appearance than today. In this world college boys and girls purposefully strive to be men of distinction and women of character. College is a time of study and expanding the character so these characters are never shown engaged in vice or corruptible behaviors. All you'll see is an adventure in living. Enjoy.Time is the only irreplaceable resource. I thank you for your time.

This book was released on 2022-04-30T22:59:00Z with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had a good feeling about meeting Ralph, and not just because of the cake element. Ralph had been chatty and interesting in his emails. But as we walked through the gallery, a sense of awkwardness settled over us. #2 I was beginning to think that Ralph was married, not divorced. I was trying to be open-minded about him, but right now with the elderly couple lurking nearby, I didn’t want to bring up his unmentionable thing. #3 The art exhibit was about the permanence of the enclosed objects, compared to the impermanence of the lobster pots. It was also about the concept of cleanliness in a world full of germs and bacteria. #4 I eventually agreed to go with the profile my children had so sweetly created, and see what happened. I met a man named Beppie, who charmingly remarked, If you're not looking for anything serious, we might be able to have a bit of fun. No thank you.
