Book The Educated Imagination and Other Writings on Critical Theory 1933 1963

Download or read book The Educated Imagination and Other Writings on Critical Theory 1933 1963 written by Northrop Frye and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1933, Northrop Frye was a recent university graduate, beginning to learn his craft as a literary essayist. By 1963, with the publication of The Educated Imagination, he had become an international academic celebrity. In the intervening three decades, Frye wrote widely and prodigiously, but it is in the papers and lectures collected in this installment of the Collected Works of Northrop Frye, that the genesis of a distinguished literary critic can be seen. Here is Frye tracing the first outlines of a literary cosmology that would culminate in The Anatomy of Criticism (1958) and shapeThe Great Code (1982) and Words with Power (1990). At the same time that Frye garnered such international acclaim, he was also a working university teacher, lecturing in the University of Toronto's English Language and Literature program. In her lively introduction, Germaine Warkentin links Frye's evolution as a critic with his love of music, his passionate concern for his students, and his growing professional ambition. The writings included in this volume show how Frye integrated ideas into the work that would consolidate the fame that Fearful Symmetry (1947) had first established.

Book excerpt: The Lamb of God represents Jesus slain for us on the cross. Jesus death redeemed the dominion lost by Adam. Through his death and resurrection, the believers on Earth will rule and reign in such a way that they will become praise on Earth. The seven horns on the Lamb of God are emblems of all power given to Christians. We could be creative in our approach to warfare with these horns of the devil, which scatter anything that brings praise to God. You have to acknowledge and understand unsearchable riches we have in Christ. The tough times must be viewed as times that can lead us to our God-given purpose in life, instead of backing away from the battle of our destiny. You were born for a cause; understand this, stand, and uphold your cause. This is the only way you can be fulfilled in life. God is waiting for a generational army that will rise up in power and save nations. You are called personally to walk with God in that army. The key is understanding the victory of Jesus for you. In The Lamb of God, Praise O. Glory shares her personal experience and thoughts with you. Praises book may encourage you to understand how your deep darkened valley can be miraculously turned into a striking well of springs of refreshing water as you learn to see things from Gods heavenly perspective by walking with the Holy Spirit.

Public schools have 'remained a faithful barometer of the major economic, political and social changes that swept across the nation.' Social historians can learn much from this well-written anthology."" -- Journal of American History .."". a fine contribution to the history of public policy studies."" -- The Public Historian School reform activists sometimes forget that schools are a product of history, that many proposed reforms were tried before -- with mixed results. That understanding of the past is critical to our understanding of current efforts to improve schools. These original studies of school reform in Indiana, from before the Civil War to the most recent efforts, offer a much-needed perspective on the reoccurring struggle to remake the public schools in a new image.

Book Lists and Catalogues in Ancient Literature and Beyond

Download or read book Lists and Catalogues in Ancient Literature and Beyond written by Rebecca Laemmle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lists and catalogues have been en vogue in philosophy, cultural, media and literary studies for more than a decade. These explorations of enumerative modes, however, have not yet had the impact on classical scholarship that they deserve. While they routinely take (a limited set of) ancient models as their starting point, there is no comparably comprehensive study that focuses on antiquity; conversely, studies on lists and catalogues in Classics remain largely limited to individual texts, and – with some notable exceptions – offer little in terms of explicit theorising. The present volume is an attempt to close this gap and foster the dialogue between the recent theoretical re-appraisal of enumerative modes and scholarship on ancient cultures. The 16 contributions to the volume juxtapose literary forms of enumeration with an abundance of ancient non-, sub- or para-literary practices of listing and cataloguing. In their different approaches to this vast and heterogenous corpus, they offer a sense of the hermeneutic, epistemic and methodological challenges with which the study of enumeration is faced, and elucidate how pragmatics, materiality, performativity and aesthetics are mediated in lists and catalogues.

Book Goliath as Gentle Giant

Download or read book Goliath as Gentle Giant written by Jonathan L. Friedmann and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Hebrew Bible and stories loyal to it, Goliath is the stereotypical giant of folklore: big, brash, violent, and dimwitted. Goliath as Gentle Giant sets out to rehabilitate the giant’s image by exploring the origins of the biblical behemoth, the limitations of the “underdog” metaphor, and the few sympathetic treatments of Goliath in popular media. What insights emerge when we imagine things from Goliath’s point of view? How might this affect our reading of the biblical account or its many retellings and interpretations? What sort of man was Goliath really? The nuanced portraits analyzed in this book serve as a catalyst to challenge readers to question stereotypes, reexamine old assumptions, and humanize the “other.”

Book Chivalric Stories as Children s Literature

Download or read book Chivalric Stories as Children s Literature written by Velma Bourgeois Richmond and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knights and ladies, giants and dragons, tournaments, battles, quests and crusades are commonplace in stories for children. This book examines how late Victorians and Edwardians retold medieval narratives of chivalry--epics, romances, sagas, legends and ballads. Stories of Beowulf, Arthur, Gawain, St. George, Roland, Robin Hood and many more thrilled and instructed children, and encouraged adult reading. Lavish volumes and schoolbooks of the era featured illustrated texts, many by major artists. Children's books, an essential part of Edwardian publishing, were disseminated throughout the English-speaking world. Many are being reprinted today. This book examines related contexts of Medievalism expressed in painting, architecture, music and public celebrations, and the works of major authors, including Sir Walter Scott, Tennyson, Longfellow and William Morris. The book explores national identity expressed through literature, ideals of honor and valor in the years before World War I, and how childhood reading influenced 20th-century writers as diverse as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Siegfried Sassoon, David Jones, Graham Greene, Ian Fleming and John Le Carre.
