Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Architecture is a social art. If the practice of architecture is the art of what you can make happen, then I believe that you are only as good as your bullpenthe builders, the engineers, the artisans, the colleagues, the staffwho collaborate with you; those who become possessed by the same urge to build, by the same belief that we are working on something exceptional together." Brian MacKay-Lyons For two weeks each summer, architect Brian MacKay-Lyons uses his family farm on the east coast of Nova Scotia for aspecial event. Among the stone ruins of a village almost four hundred years old, he assembles a community of architects, professors, and students for a design-build internship and educational initiative called Ghost Research Lab. The twoweek projectone week of design and one week of constructionrests on the idea that architecture is not only about building but also about the landscape, its history, and the community. Based on the apprenticeship environment of ancient guilds, where architectural knowledge was transferred through direct experience, Ghost redefines the architectas a builder who cultivates and contributes to the quality of the native landscape. Published to celebrate the event's tenth anniversary, Ghost offers a thorough documentation of the past decade's design-build events including drawings, models, and final photographs of completed structures. Organized chronologically and interwoven with MacKay-Lyons's simple and accessible personal narratives, Ghost also features essays by some of the most eminent figures in architectural criticism, including Christine Macy, Brian Carter, Karl Habermann, Robert Ivy, Kenneth Frampton, Thomas Fisher, Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Buchanan, and Robert McCarter. In an architectural climatefull of trends and egos, Ghost is the rare manifesto that does not preach but rather inspires quietly with simple ideas that unexpectedly unsettle and arouse.

The author divides vision into three components. The optical component addresses the eye's ability to properly focus light on the retina. The retinocortical component converts light into neural signals in the retina, transmitting them to the primary visual cortex. Finally, the integrative component converts this simple visual information into more complicated forms. The symptoms and signs, testing methods, and diseases of each part of the visual system are presented using this unique, structural component approach. A final chapter discusses the visual manifestations of psychiatric disturbances. The book is heavily illustrated with over 150 beautifully rendered line illustrations, 50 radiographic brain images, and 60 retinal photographs. Case studies with teaching questions are also included, to further the reader's knowledge and test understanding.

In order to inspire the youngsters of India and show them the possibilities of a nobler life, Gurudev delivered a series of fiery 10-minute talks on All India Radio, based on the Bhagavad-gita. He gave this ancient wisdom a contemporary context and presented in a form that was palatable and practical to the modern youngsters. Although delivered in the 1960s, these teachings are as relevant, fresh and inspiring today as they were 40 years ago. 114 SHORT TALKS ON THE BHAGAVAD-GITA

Book Imitating Authors

Download or read book Imitating Authors written by Colin Burrow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imitating Authors is a major study of the theory and practice of imitatio (the imitation of one author by another) from antiquity to the present day. It extends from early Greek texts right up to recent fictions about clones and artificial humans, and illuminates both the theory and practice of imitation. At its centre lie the imitating authors of the English Renaissance, including Ben Jonson and the most imitated imitator of them all, John Milton. Imitating Authors argues that imitation was not simply a matter of borrowing words, or of alluding to an earlier author. Imitators learnt practices from earlier writers. They imitated the structures and forms of earlier writing in ways that enabled them to create a new style which itself could be imitated. That made imitation an engine of literary change. Imitating Authors also shows how the metaphors used by theorists to explain this complex practice fed into works which were themselves imitations, and how those metaphors have come to influence present-day anxieties about imitation human beings and artificial forms of intelligence. It explores relationships between imitation and authorial style, its fraught connections with plagiarism, and how emerging ideas of genius and intellectual property changed how imitation was practised. In refreshing and jargon-free prose Burrow explains not just what imitation was in the past, but how it influences the present, and what it could be in the future. Imitating Authors includes detailed discussion of Plato, Roman rhetorical theory, Virgil, Lucretius, Petrarch, Cervantes, Ben Jonson, Milton, Pope, Wordsworth, Mary Shelley, and Kazuo Ishiguro.

Having learned of the alien technology, Count Luchino Nefaria sees the potential to turn the robot into a weapon that serves Nefaria's own purposes. He recruits the Ghost to steal the robot, but when the alien technology is brought out of its dormant mode, it turns out to be too much for even one of Earth's most skilled hackers. Iron Man is overwhelmed, the Ghost is under the robot's control, and Nefaria is in over his head. With little time and even less help, Iron Man calls on War Machine and Rescue to prepare one last stand against an alien technology focused on one simple mission: the complete destruction of mankind. Penned by veteran comic book and fantasy writer Pat Shand, Iron Man: Mutually Assured Destruction sends Iron Man on one of his most dangerous and important missions to date, and is sure to thrill Marvel fans to the very end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “They came from the land of the Great Father, as many as grasshoppers in summer…” —Autumn Snow, Tsitsistas (Cheyenne) On December 21, 1866, Red Cloud and a band of Oglala Lakota and Cheyenne warriors defeated a U.S. Army force led by Captain William J. Fetterman. The Fetterman defeat ended Red Cloud’s war for control of the Bozeman Trail with the signing of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. President Ulysses S. Grant came to office the following year on a reform platform that included Indian peace policy. Grasshoppers in Summer tells the epic story of making and breaking the Fort Laramie Treaty as seen through the eyes of opposing political, military, and tribal leaders. Relentless fraud, corruption, cultural and political pressures frustrated Grant’s effort to reform Indian policy. A conspiracy of military, railroad, and mining interests destroyed the Fort Laramie Treaty, leading to the drumbeat of war. The plains tribes’ last great victory at Greasy Grass would win the bitter spoils of total defeat.
