Book excerpt: “For the Love of Fallsville is the story of Belle Madison, a girl who was born in a small village in Highland County, Ohio during the early part of the 19th century. She grew up loving the little town, the people in it, and especially the falls. As a grown woman, she had to endure many hardships of the time, such as disease, the dangers of living in a remote area, and the Civil War. Sadly, once the war was over, the town began to slowly fade away, and Belle had to face the truth; the town was dying, and it was time to move on. The story of Belle and her family is fictional, but the town of Fallsville did exist in Highland County. It is now a ghost town, but you can hike back to the falls and imagine what life might have been like when Fallsville was a thriving community." - back cover

Book Belle Starr and Her Times

    Book Details:
  • Author : Glenn Shirley
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2015-04-09
  • ISBN : 0806187263
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Belle Starr and Her Times written by Glenn Shirley and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Belle Starr? What was she that so many myths surround her? Born in Carthage, Missouri, in 1848, the daughter of a well-to-do hotel owner, she died forty-one years later, gunned down near her cabin in the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. After her death she was called “a bandit queen,” “a female Jesse James,” “the Petticoat Terror of the Plains.” Fantastic legends proliferated about her. In this book Glenn Shirley sifts through those myths and unearths the facts. In a highly readable and informative style Shirley presents a complex and intriguing portrait. Belle Starr loved horses, music, the outdoors-and outlaws. Familiar with some of the worst bad men of her day, she was, however, convicted of no crime worse than horse thievery. Shirley also describes the historical context in which Belles Starr lived. After knowing the violence of the Civil War as a child in the Ozarks, She moves to Dallas in the 1860s and married a former Confederate guerilla who specialized in armed robbery. After he was killed, she found a home among renegade Cherokees in the Indian Territory, on her second husband’s allotment. She traveled as far west as Los Angeles to escape the law and as far north as Detroit to go to jail. She married three times and had two children, whom she idolized and tormented. Ironically she was shot when she had decided to go straight, probably murdered by a neighbor who feared that she would turn him in to the police. This book will find a wide readership among western-history and outlaw buffs, folklorists, sociologists, and regional historians. Shirley’s summary of the literature about Belle Starr is as interesting as the true story of Belle herself, who has become the West’s best-known woman outlaw.

Lindsay Baker has now turned his enormous mental and physical energies to the subject and has brought to view - if not to life -eighty-six Texas ghost towns for the reader's pleasure. Baker lists three criteria for inclusion: tangible remains, public access, and statewide coverage. In each case Baker comments about the town's founding, its former significance, and the reasons for its decline. There are maps and instructions for reaching each site and numerous photographs showing the past and present status of each. The contemporary photos were taken, in most instances, by Baker himself, who proves as adept a photographer as he is researcher and writer....Baker has done his work thoroughly and well, within limits imposed by necessity. He obviously had fun in the process and it shows in his prose."---New Mexico Historical Review

Book Madam Belle

  • Author : Maryjean Wall
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky

  • ISBN : 0813147077
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Madam Belle written by Maryjean Wall and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “captivating” true story of the notorious Gilded Age madam who inspired the Belle Watling character in Gone with the Wind (The Wall Street Journal). Belle Brezing made a major career move when she stepped off the streets of Lexington, Kentucky, and into Jennie Hill’s bawdy house—an upscale brothel run out of a former residence of Mary Todd Lincoln. At nineteen, Brezing was already infamous as a youth steeped in death, sex, drugs, and scandal. But it was in Miss Hill’s “respectable” establishment that she began to acquire the skills, manners, and business contacts that allowed her to ascend to power and influence as an internationally known madam. In this revealing book, Maryjean Wall offers a tantalizing true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South, as told through the life and times of the notorious Miss Belle. After years on the streets and working for Hill, Belle Brezing borrowed enough money to set up her own establishment—her wealth and fame growing alongside the booming popularity of horse racing. Soon, her houses were known internationally, and powerful patrons from the industrial cities of the Northeast courted her in the lavish parlors of her gilt-and-mirror mansion. Secrecy was a moral code in the sequestered demimonde of prostitution in Victorian America, so little has been written about the Southern madam credited with inspiring the character Belle Watling in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. Following Brezing from her birth amid the ruins of the Civil War to the height of her scarlet fame and beyond, Wall uses her story to explore a wider world of sex, business, politics, and power. The result is a scintillating tale as enthralling as any fiction.

Belle is a character familiar to many of us: the local crazy lady, the dishevelled woman whose house has fallen into disrepair, who strikes fear in local children and disgust among her neighbours. But within the crazy lady is a life derailed, unmoored. Who is Belle Dearing? And what has made her the way she is? Belle Falls poses these questions and, as the story unfolds, answers them deeply and indelibly. From a Newfoundland childhood tragically cut short to her present-day troubles, Belle’s life has been anything but ordinary. But through it all—the heartbreak, the bad choices—stands an indomitable and irrepressible spirit you’ll not soon forget.
