Book excerpt: A riveting thriller, Ghost Eater marks the introduction of an intense new voice in seafaring adventure. Moored in a wintry Asian harbor at the turn of the twentieth century, Captain Ulysses Vanders experiences a revelation. A ferryman brings a mysterious gift--a wine at once rare and familiar that brings the sailor back to a moment in Sumatra thirty years before. "I closed my eyes, remembering where I had last tasted this liquor, remembering back across the years, remembering how steady the hand had been that held out the cup to me, and how desperate the circumstances. With a stab, her face rose before me--beautiful, tantalizing, terrible to behold." This haunting memory leads the sailor back to his first command and a desperate river journey to rescue missionaries along a remote jungle river. Captain of an aging steamboat, Vanders soon finds himself burdened with a set of unexpected, mysterious passengers, each traveling to the mission outpost known as "Light of the World" for reasons of his or her own. The island world Vanders discovers is a ghostly place, darkly lit with the flames of social upheaval, a world of superstition and strife, as age-old ways of life are swept away in the murderous rampage of a tribe gone mad. At the edge of civilization, the young American captain learns not only the challenge of command but the courage to confront his own illusions, beautiful and terrible to behold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning myth, history, and contemporary culture, a terrifying and illuminating excavation of the meaning of cannibalism. Every culture has monsters that eat us, and every culture repels in horror when we eat ourselves. From Grendel to medieval Scottish cannibal Sawney Bean, and from the Ghuls of ancient Persia to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, tales of being consumed are both universal and universally terrifying. In this book, Kevin J. Wetmore Jr. explores the full range of monsters that eat the dead: ghouls, cannibals, wendigos, and other beings that feast on human flesh. Moving from myth through history to contemporary popular culture, Wetmore considers everything from ancient Greek myths of feeding humans to the gods, through sky burial in Tibet and Zoroastrianism, to actual cases of cannibalism in modern societies. By examining these seemingly inhuman acts, Eaters of the Dead reveals that those who consume corpses can teach us a great deal about human nature—and our deepest human fears.

Now it's 1917—the threshold of a modern age—and Delia lives a peaceful life with Police Captain Gabe Ryan. That peace shatters when a strange young girl starts haunting their lives and threatens Gabe. Delia tries to discover what this ghost wants as she becomes entangled in the mystery surrounding a charismatic evangelist who preaches pacifism and an end to war. Book excerpt: Has the world’s hottest pop star been kidnapped, joined a secret sect, or simply gone into hiding? The answer lies in the abandoned subway stations of Chicago . . . One minute insanely famous pop singer Molly Metropolis is on her way to a major performance in Chicago, and the next, she’s gone. A journalist who’s been covering Molly joins the singer's personal assistant in an increasingly desperate search to find her, guided by a journal left behind in her hotel room, and possible clues hidden in her songs—all of which seem to point to an abandoned line in the Chicago subway system. It leads them to a map of half-completed train lines underneath Chicago, which in turn leads them to the secret, subterranean headquarters of an obscure intellectual sect—and the realization that they’ve gone too far to turn back. And if a superstar can disappear without a trace . . . what can happen to these young women? Suspenseful and wildly original, The Ghost Network is a novel about larger-than-life fantasies—of love, sex, pop music, amateur detective work, and personal reinvention. Debut novelist Catie Disabato bursts on the scene with an ingeniously plotted, witty, haunting mystery.

Book Restoring a Presence

  • Author : Peter Nabokov
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2016-01-18

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing American Indians in the center of the story, Restoring a Presence relates an entirely new history of Yellowstone National Park. Although new laws have been enacted giving American Indians access to resources on public lands, Yellowstone historically has excluded Indians and their needs from its mission. Each of the other flagship national parks—Glacier, Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Grand Canyon—has had successful long-term relationships with American Indian groups even as it has sought to emulate Yellowstone in other dimensions of national park administration. In the first comprehensive account of Indians in and around Yellowstone, Peter Nabokov and Lawrence Loendorf seek to correct this administrative disparity. Drawing from archaeological records, Indian testimony, tribal archives, and collections of early artifacts from the Park, the authors trace the interactions of nearly a dozen Indian groups with each of Yellowstone’s four geographic regions. Restoring a Presence is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and maps and features narratives on subjects ranging from traditional Indian uses of plant, mineral, and animal resources to conflicts involving the Nez Perce, Bannock, and Sheep Eater peoples. By considering the many roles Indians have played in the complex history of the Yellowstone region, authors Nabokov and Loendorf provide a basis on which the National Park Service and other federal agencies can develop more effective relationships with Indian groups in the Yellowstone region.

Book excerpt: Geist Esser is the mystery/thriller story of the quest of Matthew Thomas and Luther St. Johns. As young boys, they find a dying man who gasps out the word Anima with his last breath. That was forty years previous. Now, upon the death of their childhood buddy, they are on the quest to discover why many dying people are once again gasping out the word Anima with their last breath. Their journey includes visits to the library and to a real estate office for information, where they run into someone whom they believe knows something about what is going on. They visit a church that is painted black, with red trim. They think that this place may be central to their quest. Interspersed amid their travels are the causes of the word Anima. Peoples souls are being removed from them. The description of the soul removal operation is this: Suddenly, his hearing begins to disappear. When it is completely gone, immediately he hears a slurping sound like a straw sucking the last of a liquid from the bottom of a can. It ends with a hollow echoing sound. His eyes go blank like a dead mans eyes. If Matthew and Luther had looked at him at that moment, they would have seen his eyes grow blank and empty as if in a dead man. The persons collecting the souls are Geist Esserssoul eaters. They look like ordinary people dressed like anyone else. For good reason, they are ordinary people like you and me. Matthew, who is a theological professor at the college, weaves pertinent theological insight, helping Luther to better understand what is going on and, more importantly, why. As the boys accumulate clues and evidences, they eventually end up in the climactic scene at the black church. Two hundred Geist Essers assemble to deliver their accumulated cache of souls, which they carry in big stainless-steel bowls. One by one, they dump the contents of the bowls into a large vat at the front of the church.

Together, the five friends will have to confront the memories—and the horror—of a night, years ago, that changed everything for them. Because Andrew and his friends have a secret. A thing they have kept to themselves for twenty years. Something no one else should know. But the past is not dead, and Kingsport is a town with secrets of its own. One dark secret... Book excerpt: Crayton Breaux makes minimum wage clerking in a French Quarter voodoo shop aimed at tourists. It’s enough to pay the rent and keep him in beer and partying because, in New Orleans, every day is Fat Tuesday, brah! As for the “voodoo”? Well, the shop, with its skull-and-candles altar and clouds of incense, definitely spooks the tourists in from Iowa or Delaware. They clutch their go-cup hurricanes and nervously joke about sticking pins in dolls and gris-gris bags full of REVENGE ON YOUR ENEMY! spell powder. Crayton thinks it’s hilarious. More than a few of these idiots think this stuff’s real … He won’t be laughing long.
