Book What Has Passed and What Remains

Download or read book What Has Passed and What Remains written by Peter Friederici and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferrell Secakuku remembers the ancient farming rites of his Hopi people but saw them replaced by a cash economy. Sheep rancher Joe Manterola recalls watching hard scrabble farms on what is now tree-studded grassland on Garland Prairie. Navajo Rose Gishie once saw freshly dug holes fill with clean, drinkable water where none rises today. All over northern Arizona, people have seen the landscapes change, and livelihoods with them. In this remarkable book they share their stories. Thirteen narratives—from ranchers, foresters, scientists, Native American farmers, and others—tell how northern Arizona landscapes and livelihoods reflect rapid social and environmental change. The twentieth century saw huge changes as Arizona’s human population swelled and vacation-home developments arose in the backcountry. Riparian areas dried up, cattle ranching declined, and some wildlife species vanished while others thrived. The people whose words are preserved here have watched it all happen. The book is a product of Northern Arizona University’s Ecological Oral Histories project, which has been collecting remembrances of long-time area residents who have observed changes to the land from the 1930s to the present day. It carves a wide swath, from the Arizona Strip to the Mogollon Rim, from valleys near Prescott to the New Mexico line. It takes readers to the Bar Heart Ranch north of Williams and to the Doy Reidhead Ranch southeast of Holbrook, to the forests of Flagstaff and the mesas of Indian country. Enhanced with more than fifty illustrations, this book brings environmental change down to earth by allowing us to see it through the eyes of those whose lives it has directly touched. What Has Passed and What Remains is a window on the past that carries important lessons for the future.

Book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country

Download or read book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inception of the Ghost Dance religion in 1890 marked a critical moment in Lakota history. Yet, because this movement alarmed government officials, culminating in the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee of 250 Lakota men, women, and children, historical accounts have most often described the Ghost Dance from the perspective of the white Americans who opposed it. In A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country, historian Rani-Henrik Andersson instead gives Lakotas a sounding board, imparting the multiplicity of Lakota voices on the Ghost Dance at the time. Whereas early accounts treated the Ghost Dance as a military or political movement, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country stresses its peaceful nature and reveals the breadth of Lakota views on the subject. The more than one hundred accounts compiled here show that the movement caused friction within Lakota society even as it spurred genuine religious belief. These accounts, many of them never before translated from the original Lakota or published, demonstrate that the Ghost Dance’s message resonated with Lakotas across artificial “progressive” and “nonprogressive” lines. Although the movement was often criticized as backward and disconnected from the harsh realities of Native life, Ghost Dance adherents were in fact seeking new ways to survive, albeit not those that contemporary whites envisioned for them. The Ghost Dance, Andersson suggests, might be better understood as an innovative adaptation by the Lakotas to the difficult situation in which they found themselves—and as a way of finding a path to a better life. By presenting accounts of divergent views among the Lakota people, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country expands the narrative of the Ghost Dance, encouraging more nuanced interpretations of this significant moment in Lakota and American history.

Book My Darling Wife Or How I Passed the Time of Day Between 18th April 1940 and 5th November 1945

Download or read book My Darling Wife Or How I Passed the Time of Day Between 18th April 1940 and 5th November 1945 written by Harry Berry and published by Authors On Line Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed account, told mainly in the form of the true letters and dairy notes of one young man s experience of World War II from the day he was called up to the day he returned home almost five years later. There are no heroics, no sex, and any drama is hidden between the lines. The letters to his wife, Gwen, are matter-of-fact, at times almost naive, but often with a touch of humour. They were written in uncomfortable and sometimes primitive conditions from barrack rooms in England, India and Malaya, from the crowded decks of troopships and as censored postcards and letters from Japanese POW Camps in Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. They appear exactly as written. Nothing added, nothing taken away. Parts of the Diary and other notes written during the first 19 months of captivity were confiscated by the Imperial Japanese Army in Tokyo. The remainder were hidden and brought safely home. Harry Berry's wife Gwen, never gave up hope even though it was 18 months from the fall of Singapore before she received news of her husband. She kept all his letters, without which this small insignificant slice of 20th century history would never have been preserved for posterity! "
