Book Down to this

Download or read book Down to this written by Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some young men, climbing Everest or sailing solo into polar seas isn't the biggest risk in the world. Instead it is venturing alone into the deepest urban jungle, where human nature is the dangerous, incomprehensible and sometimes wildly uplifting force that tests not only your ability to survive but also your own humanity. One cold November day, Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall heads out on just such a quest. He packs up a new tent, some clothes, his notebooks and a pen and goes to live in Tent City, twenty-seven lawless acres where the largest hobo town on the continent squats in the scandalized shadow of Canada's largest city. The rules he sets for himself are simple: no access to money, family or friends, except what he can find from that day on. He'll do whatever people in Tent City do to get by, be whatever bum, wino, beggar, hustler, criminal, junkie or con man he chooses to be on any given day. When he arrives, he finds a dump full of the castaways of the last millennium, human and otherwise. On the edge of the world, yet somehow smack in the middle of it all, fugitives, drug addicts, prostitutes, dealers and ex-cons have created an anarchic society, where the rules are made up nightly and your life depends on knowing them. Not only does Bishop-Stall manage to survive until the bulldozers come, but against all odds his own heart and spirit slowly mend. An astonishing account of birth, suicide, brawls, binges, tears, crazed laughter, good and bad intentions, fiendish charity and the sudden eloquence and generosity of broken souls, Down to This is Bishop-Stall's iridescent love song to a lost city like no other. "From the Hardcover edition."

Book excerpt: You haven't read anything until you have read “Norman's Revenge” yet. Psycho touched on the subject of love and betrayal that resulted in murder, Bates Motel was too delicate. Norman is sitting on the bed watching his mother get undressed. No, Norman's Revenge goes much deeper than that. In Norman's Revenge Norman and his mother actually have sex. This is a story of lust, love, betrayal murder and revenge. The book starts out with Norma in the hospital having her baby boy. Norma's first pregnancy is as a result of rape. Norma's father raped Norma repeatedly ever since she was a little girl. After Norma's mother died from head wounds inflicted on her by Norma's father, Norma was the beneficiary of the abuse. When Norma got pregnant by her father, after being raped by her father for the umpteenth time, she had her first son she decided she wasn't going to take her father's crap any more. Norma knew her father didn't care anything about her and Norma just figured her father wouldn't care a thing about her son either. He used to care about the hotel but he didn't seem to care about that anymore. He just drank himself into a drunken stupor morning, noon and night. But just as expected when Norma comes home from the hospital after giving birth to Norman, her father rapes her again. As a result of this rape Norma is pregnant again. This has to stop, Norma thought. And it did. Norman grows up wanting to be left alone. He's quiet and soft spoken. Quite the opposite of his loud mouthed, demanding mother. Norman's little brother Nick is also quiet and minds his own business. After a series of incidents to Norman beyond Norman's control Norman lets people know he’s not a pushover anymore. Enough is enough. Now is the time for Norman to prove he is not what his mother turned out to be or tried to turn him into. Now is the time for Norman to get revenge on everybody and anybody who hurt, used and abused him, including his beloved mother.

Book excerpt: Hi, my name is Neven. I'm very attractive and come from a family that were never slaves. The family is very large and physically beautiful. Our family has always been wealthy. Once, they almost lost everything, but they came back with a vengeance, never to be without again by any means necessary. To this day, none of the elders in my family have never had to work and have been able to take care of their large families. My granny raised me and two of my older cousins. I have an amazing life that I was born in, and any problems I have ever had, for the most part, did not have to happen. I have always had very expensive things. The people in my life never knew how wealthy our family is, so they did extravagant things for me. I'm handsome, humble, and sometimes I can have a slick mouth, which they like; and if you push me, I will lose my head on you. I have very famous friends that, for the most part, don't know me. They just see the pretty picture and that I don't have to want for anything like some of them. I have more money than them.

Book The Memoirs of Angela

Download or read book The Memoirs of Angela written by Angela Sampson- Jarrett and published by Angela Sampson-Jarrett. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs and alcohol are considered the elixir of life. How paradoxical it is that they are also the essence of death. Those who have not drunk do not know the simple pleasures of life. But those who do know that all pleasure is derived from it. A high price for a low life. In the beginning, the reasons for indulgence are very apparent. Unresolved issues, childhood trauma, heartbreak, the loss of a loved one, or parental neglect—any one of these reasons could lead to a dependency on the poison of your choice. However, as time passes, those reasons fade into the background and become unintelligible. If an individual was to ask me why I got into substance abuse, I might not be able to give them one good answer. But the truth of the matter is, there is a void that needs to be filled, no matter what. Hence, an individual is likely to fall into the pothole of drug addiction. If seen from what scholars have defined the poison one chooses for himself, it is the use of a drug that is viewed as posing a problem by a society concerned. Drug addiction can be counted as a disease that does not discriminate and can impact anyone—regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, body type, or personal beliefs. Alcoholism and drug addiction may be the end product of various other factors, too, like biological, psychological, social, and environmental. Drug addiction and sobriety are two sides of the same coin. Being sober at a place and then wholly violent just with the addictive poison is what the actual game is about. Some people might encounter diving into alcohol at an early age, mainly due to the stress, traumas, sexual assault, or violence they have been subjected to. Kids are just like monkeys; seeing their surroundings, one can quickly adapt to their life patterns, hence drinking or doing drugs. Exploring different avenues regarding drugs at a young age can prompt issues sometime down the road, particularly in your 20s and 30s. This is particularly evident when young people participate in regular hard-core boozing. Growing up around family members and close relatives who suffer from alcoholism or drug addiction increases the risk of alcohol or drug abuse for generations to come. Indulgence in drugs has a way back. It is critical to recognize that even if a person can improve their alertness and awareness, they must still not drive or make important decisions until the drug is ultimately out of their system. This book tells and elaborates that drug addiction is recoverable. Since the brain holds the ropes of our actions and mind games, nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself, even leaving drugs. The trouble is that quitting is rarely easy, and the best solution isn't always clear. In this book, you will find how I got addicted to drugs and how you should believe that getting rid of this abuse is not impossible. It's all in your head. But what may seem like it is in your head may also take over your entire body, your entire being. My life has taught me a lot, but it was not the kindest of teachers. It was hardly a teacher. I only observed my life and learned what I had to. Substance abuse has been a very consistent part of my initial existence. But it does not define me, nor will it ever. This book has written in it the depths of my chaotic but sequentially orderly life. Having a Master's in addiction Counseling, I only want to humanize the addictive aspect of existence. Despite my difficult existence, I have learned enough to prevent others from falling into the same trap. I have learned enough to laugh about it now and then, even. Because what good is a life that is not even mildly amusing? I thank God for everything and for giving me the strength and resolve to be who I am and learn what I know.
