Farris O’Laughlin has been back in Chicago for five years. He’d spent thirteen years before his return in a mental asylum after his brother had him committed for ‘insanity’. Farris plots revenge in the way he knows will hurt his brother the most—bringing down the family business. Darien Shaunessy is Farris’ new driver and guard. He’s around to keep Farris in line...or so Farris’ brother thinks. Darien has his own reasons for working for the O’Laughlins, but Farris wasn’t part of his plan. When two men from different parts of the city come together, powerful men could lose their wealth and control. And the lovers could find bravery they never thought they possessed. ‘Love Don’t Die’ by Jambrea Jo Jones They might die, but their love never will... Moran Schultz was tasked with getting information from one ward to another. He was all for helping his brother make Chicago a better place. What he wasn’t expecting was his lover to show up after a month of no contact. Dutch Luciano isn’t going to let Moran go without a fight. They love each other and the gangs in charge of Chicago aren’t going to keep them apart. Can Moran let Dutch back in or is it too dangerous? More than Chicago is on the line. Will love be strong enough to survive? ‘Passion Under Fire’ by Stephani Hecht Can their love overcome the danger coming their way, or are they doomed to die? Georgio is the third son in a powerful mob family, but he has never agreed with their violent or illegal ways, so he joins the resistance in an attempt to right the wrongs that his family has done. But, by doing so, he puts himself at great risk of getting caught. And if he is, his older brothers would have no problem ordering him executed, their sibling or not. Tito is a runner for the family. While he hates the gang, he has a sick brother at home to take care of, so he has to take the job because it pays so well. The last thing Tito expects is to form an attachment to Georgio. While Georgio tries to deny his feelings for Tito, he finds himself drawn to him as well. But, if they were to be caught together, they could be killed on the spot. Will their love be able to survive so many obstacles? Or can they find a way to happiness? ‘Ganging Up on Love’ by Amber Kell New love can bring new dangers. When Dirk volunteered to take the information to the resistance, he didn’t know he’d find his perfect match in their leader. Determined to find a place among them, he offers to help wherever he can. Leon has always been alone, afraid of trusting anyone with his affection. When the visitor from Ward Three comes in with important information to bring down the mob bosses, he doesn’t know how to handle their instant attraction. When outside dangers threaten to tear them apart, will their new love be enough to keep them together? ‘Bonfire Heart’ by Devon Rhodes Sometimes fires burn and destroy, but from the ashes, new growth can heal and cleanse. Thierry Alexander is the deputy mayor of Chicago, a city he loves but can’t save on his own from the corrupt political system. His assistant and lover, Eduardo, is also known as Cesar, the head of the underground resistance movement. He has been working behind the scenes for years and finally gets what he needs—enough information to get the US government involved and take down the criminal elements strangling the city he loves. But they need to act fast because legislation is about to be enacted that will give rise to social and ethnic purging in Chicago. Not knowing who they can trust, they will have to put their faith in one another and risk everything to save a city.

He and Matt have been dating for years, they’ve met each other’s families, and everyone seems to agree Matt is “good enough.” Despite ongoing problems with Matt’s jealous and possessive tendencies, they move into an apartment together in a new town. Tito finds a job as a clerk at a used bookstore. Everything is working out. Then the local Wiccan circle, which is hosting a workshop, accepts Tito’s RSVP but not Matt’s. Despite Matt’s jealous whining, Tito refuses to give up his shot at joining a circle and making friends in their new town. When Tito shows up at the house where the circle is holding their meeting, he discovers his sexy upstairs neighbor from the apartment complex, Leo, is a member. As soon as they shake hands, magical sparks fly. Tito and Leo both feel it. During the barbeque after the workshop, Leo seeks out Tito, and they talk for hours. Leo is everything Matt isn’t: outgoing, deep, and kind. The problem is that Matt knows it, too, and for once his jealous paranoia that Tito is attracted to another guy is on target. Despite Tito’s being loyal and refusing to become more than friends with Leo, Matt unleashes his full rage, ripping off the mask of the lovable nerd and becoming a rageful abuser. As soon as Leo sees the bruises, he convinces Tito to take a stand and dump Matt. But with Matt’s behavior getting progressively more unhinged, where will it end? With Leo and Tito getting together, or with both of them dead at Matt’s hands?

Book Tito and the Rise and Fall of Yugoslavia

Download or read book Tito and the Rise and Fall of Yugoslavia written by Richard West and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures have dominated a nation's destiny as much as Marshal Tito of former Yugoslavia. For nearly thirty years he held together mutually hostile religious groups in a deeply divided country, but his death in 1980 rekindled centuries-old hatreds and by 1992 Yugoslavia ceased to exist. In this revealing biography, Richard West questions the full impact of Tito's reign of power and his implicit responsibility for the ensuing violent, bloody war in Bosnia. 'Excellent ... I recommend his book for those who already know about Yugoslavia and want food for thought about the future.' David Owen, Sunday Times 'Admirable ... Carefully researched and extremely readable.' Literary Review 'A passionate book, in which West's historical sense is interlaced with his own very intimate knowledge of Yugoslavia from the late 1940s on and of the poignancy of [subsequent] events.' Fergus Pyle, Irish Times 'Masterly'. Glasgow Herald

Book Ritual Emotion Violence

Download or read book Ritual Emotion Violence written by Elliott B. Weininger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microsociologists seek to capture social life as it is experienced, and in recent decades no one has championed the microsociological approach more fiercely than Randall Collins. The pieces in this exciting volume offer fresh and original insights into key aspects of Collins’ thought, and of microsociology more generally. The introductory essay by Elliot B. Weininger and Omar Lizardo provides a lucid overview of the key premises this perspective. Ethnographic papers by Randol Contreras, using data from New York, and Philippe Bourgois and Laurie Kain Hart, using data from Philadelphia, examine the social logic of violence in street-level narcotics markets. Both draw on heavily on Collins’ microsociological account of the features of social situations that tend to engender violence. In the second section of the book, a study by Paul DiMaggio, Clark Bernier, Charles Heckscher, and David Mimno tackles the question of whether electronically mediated interaction exhibits the ritualization which, according to Collins, is a common feature of face-to-face encounters. Their results suggest that, at least under certain circumstances, digitally mediated interaction may foster social solidarity in a manner similar to face-to-face interaction. A chapter by Simone Polillo picks up from Collins’ work in the sociology of knowledge, examining multiple ways in which social network structures can engender intellectual creativity. The third section of the book contains papers that critically but sympathetically assess key tenets of microsociology. Jonathan H. Turner argues that the radically microsociological perspective developed by Collins will better serve the social scientific project if it is embedded in a more comprehensive paradigm, one that acknowledges the macro- and meso-levels of social and cultural life. A chapter by David Gibson presents empirical analyses of decisions by state leaders concerning whether or not to use force to deal with internal or external foes, suggesting that Collins’ model of interaction ritual can only partially illuminate the dynamics of these highly consequential political moments. Work by Erika Summers-Effler and Justin Van Ness seeks to systematize and broaden the scope of Collins’ theory of interaction, by including in it encounters that depart from the ritual model in important ways. In a final, reflective chapter, Randall Collins himself highlights the promise and future of microsociology. Clearly written, these pieces offer cutting-edge thinking on some of the crucial theoretical and empirical issues in sociology today.

Download or read book Tito written by Neil Barnett and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the charismatic and controversial Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito. The near-mythological figure Josip Broz Tito was a complicated one. An oppressor, a dictator, a reformer, and a playboy, Tito was an inspirational partisan leader and scourge of the Germans during their occupation of Yugoslavia in the Second World War, a doctrinaire communist, and an ever-present thorn in Moscow’s side. He managed Yugoslavia’s internal tensions through personality, a force of will, and political oppression. It was only after his death in 1980 that the true scale of his influence was understood. At that time, Yugoslavia’s institutions and politicians were revealed as rudderless, and the country created by Tito—a Croat turned Yugoslav—collapsed into a bloody and at times genocidal civil war. These ethnic conflicts were Tito’s nightmare, yet, as Neil Barnett shows in this short but engaging biography, they were in many ways the result of his own myopic egomania.
